Wade Phillips out as Dallas Cowboys' coach

[Updated at 5:57 p.m. ET] Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones confirmed in a news conference Monday afternoon that Wade Phillips was out as the team's head coach, and that assistant head coach Jason Garrett will lead the team on an interim basis.

Jones also said he is elevating defensive line coach Paul Pasqualoni to defensive coordinator.

"An in-season coaching change is something that I've not done before. It's something that I was reluctant to even consider as late as this this past week. But at this time I believe … what’s in the best interest of the organization and the fans is a coaching change," Jones said.

Jones previously had said that Phillips would finish the season as coach. But Sunday night's 45-7 loss to Green Bay - moving the Cowboys' record this season to 1-7 - helped Jones change his mind.

"I don't like the way [changing my mind] looks stability-wise as far as our organization is concerned – not my own self, but the organization – but I think [the situation] called for it, and I recognized that after the game that we just weren't playing winning football, and our best chance was to make this change," Jones said. "Now with that, I don't apologize to anybody about changing my mind."

Jones said Garrett would have a chance to secure the job long-term - especially if the team has success over the next eight games - and that Garrett has "the temperament [and] the disposition to affect a culture change."

[Original post] Wade Phillips is out as the Dallas Cowboys' head coach following an abysmal performance by the team against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night, a CNN affiliate and ESPN are reporting.

Many people were expecting the move (some were demanding it), and the search "wade phillips fired" was trending No. 1 on Google on Monday afternoon.

America's Team is off to a 1-7 start, their worst since 1989, after a preseason full of Super Bowl hype. Fans and observers have placed the blame squarely on the team's coaches.

CNN affiliate KTXA in Dallas said offensive coordinator Jason Garrett, an assistant head coach and one-time Cowboys backup quarterback, will take the team's reins.

Phillips, the Cowboy's seventh coach, compiled a 35-24 record in three seasons with Dallas. Only one of those wins came in the playoffs, a 34-14 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in 2009. Phillips' ouster marks the first time the Cowboys have canned a coach mid-season.

Players told CBS 11 that a team meeting was held at 3 p.m. The Cowboys are scheduled to hold a news conference at 4 p.m.

Owner Jerry Jones has repeatedly said that Phillips would finish the season, but after Sunday's 45-7 shellacking in Green Bay, he said there would be "consequences" for players and coaches.

The firing had to do with JJ tying Wade hands. UNTIL THE CITY of DALLAS fires JJ the team will never be coachable or win another super bowl...

Cowboys, I still love you, but now it's time to let Romo go as well. He was not doing to good before his injury either. Sorry Romo, but your season is up in Dallas.

I love it! The only thing nearly as entertaining as a Steelers win is a string of embarrassing Dallas losses. They were never America's team, and any suggestion that they ever were- particularly that collection of felons that won them a Super Bowl in the 90s- is BS. I hope they suck for another 10 years.

  10. Dallas Cowboys Rock!

Some of us believe in the Cowboys and stick with them in thick and thin. We roll with it and then when they come back and beat the snot out of the non-fans...we will rub their noses in it like we always do. No biggie. We stick with our team and don't flip flop like the others. How many Superbowl rings does your team have? ;0) We can handle it.

I have to agree somewhat with Chris on this. I do agree that JJ has won several superbowls but he needs to figure out who will coach this team, himself or someone he hires. I think this owner is way to involved in the day to day coaching. he needs to stay up in his plush office and make pizza commercials and let the coaches do what they were hired to do - COACH..... Seems to me like there are two many cooks in the kitchen there at Dallas.

I do not understand the firing of the coach . He was not on the field playing the game , i think players should be held accountable since they do make the big bucks , cut there pay until they improve and if there is no improvment the should be cut ,bottom line .

When are the players going to be held responsible for the 1-7 record.
It seems Coachs always have to take it in the neck when the team does not win.
Let's start fining players 250G a game for non-performance of their contract. That may wake some of them up as an incective to win.

The Cowboys will ALWAYS be America's team despite any past or future bad role models. The other 31 teams are perfect examples, gimme a break and get over the fact that some of u haters don't like the attention the Cowboys get. There's a reason they sell out every season and have so many fans that care how they are coached.WE have 5 SUPERBOWL RINGS and tie that with 2 other teams with only the Steelers having 6 rings. So when your team has 5 rings, come back and tell us how bad we are.

    • Anonymous - you know why

The cowboys definitely need to get over the "america's team" thing. They need to focus on being Dallas's team. I don't think I've ever seen a team's season go so wrong. For a team that was picked to go to the superbowl, they've fallen about as far as a team can. And it has been obvious over at least the last three weeks, that the cowboys had already quit on the season. Last night was complete humiliation.

More like america's team to hate, cowboys are the most hated team in the NFL.

Just because one Texas sports writer in the 70s called the team americas team doesn't make it true. Most everyone in the US hates the Cowboys and their smug fanbase.

THE Dallas Cowboys will always be America's Team no matter what all you "wanna-be-as-great-as-the-cowboys" fans say. The fact of the matter is, if ya'll didn't think they were America's Team, why have they had that name before most of you were born? I can tell ya, because of me and the rest of the DC fans, we are loyal to our team no matter what. Even through no wins, broken collar bones, fired coaches, and stupid rumors the media posts.

Loyalty.. THAT'S what football is about.

Fanatics of all flavors should take note. The "America's Team" moniker is not about which team is the best team but which team is seen by the rest of the world as representing America.

Like it or not, when you say basketball, baseball and American football to a foreigner, the teams they will name will be the Chicago Bulls, the New York Yankees, and the Dallas Cowboys.

Now back on topic, what a waste of time, Coach Cupcake should have been fired 3 years ago. If you don't have discipline you don't have a way to keep their egos in check. More accountability is what we need. Jason is just a cream puff like Wade and needs to be just a quaterback coach! Need to bring Jimmy Johnson in to consult and show Jason how to run a team and earn respect!! Love Them Cowboys!!

Oh please, the Cowboys are Dallas' team, that's it. In all likelihood the only reason people outside of Texas read this article are because they're in my situation. They hate the Cowboys, and enjoy seeing them suffer. Much like the Yankees. Whenever bad things happen to them, the rest of the country smiles. Calling the Cowboys "America's Team" at this point is like saying "DUI vehicular homicide" is America's crime. Just because it happens in this country doesn't mean people like it.
