Wade Phillips out as Dallas Cowboys' coach

[Updated at 5:57 p.m. ET] Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones confirmed in a news conference Monday afternoon that Wade Phillips was out as the team's head coach, and that assistant head coach Jason Garrett will lead the team on an interim basis.

Jones also said he is elevating defensive line coach Paul Pasqualoni to defensive coordinator.

"An in-season coaching change is something that I've not done before. It's something that I was reluctant to even consider as late as this this past week. But at this time I believe … what’s in the best interest of the organization and the fans is a coaching change," Jones said.

Jones previously had said that Phillips would finish the season as coach. But Sunday night's 45-7 loss to Green Bay - moving the Cowboys' record this season to 1-7 - helped Jones change his mind.

"I don't like the way [changing my mind] looks stability-wise as far as our organization is concerned – not my own self, but the organization – but I think [the situation] called for it, and I recognized that after the game that we just weren't playing winning football, and our best chance was to make this change," Jones said. "Now with that, I don't apologize to anybody about changing my mind."

Jones said Garrett would have a chance to secure the job long-term - especially if the team has success over the next eight games - and that Garrett has "the temperament [and] the disposition to affect a culture change."

[Original post] Wade Phillips is out as the Dallas Cowboys' head coach following an abysmal performance by the team against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night, a CNN affiliate and ESPN are reporting.

Many people were expecting the move (some were demanding it), and the search "wade phillips fired" was trending No. 1 on Google on Monday afternoon.

America's Team is off to a 1-7 start, their worst since 1989, after a preseason full of Super Bowl hype. Fans and observers have placed the blame squarely on the team's coaches.

CNN affiliate KTXA in Dallas said offensive coordinator Jason Garrett, an assistant head coach and one-time Cowboys backup quarterback, will take the team's reins.

Phillips, the Cowboy's seventh coach, compiled a 35-24 record in three seasons with Dallas. Only one of those wins came in the playoffs, a 34-14 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in 2009. Phillips' ouster marks the first time the Cowboys have canned a coach mid-season.

Players told CBS 11 that a team meeting was held at 3 p.m. The Cowboys are scheduled to hold a news conference at 4 p.m.

Owner Jerry Jones has repeatedly said that Phillips would finish the season, but after Sunday's 45-7 shellacking in Green Bay, he said there would be "consequences" for players and coaches.

America's team = NYG. Best ownership family in football. Steve Owen coached from 1931-53 and never had what would correspond to a contract. Steelers are runners up. But poor Wade, it is time to retire, I think.

No way are the New York Giants, America's team. They are based in New Jersey, but refuse to call themselves New Jersey Giants like they should be called.

On history, class, football philosophy, and the fact that the G-men put pro football on the map in the 1950s nationally speaking, Club 13 puts to shame the Dallas Cowboys and most other franchises.

That's because the cowboys are the cartels most favorite team, and they are buying up the merchandise to help disguise themselves along the border. They sell the most cowboys stuff because people like burning their stuff the most.

Considering the complete lack of style, class or taste required to actually wear sports-themed merchandise, it's no wonder that Dallas leads the nation in sales. (no one- and I mean *no one*- with any class whatsoever wears a garment with a companies name plastered on it unless that are getting paid to....or they own the company!)
I've visited some of the gated-communities in the Dallas area... most seem to share the same tastes and styles as a lotto winner from a trailer park.
Simply having money (or lots of credit card debt) does *not* mean that they have good taste.

The only reason why the Cowboys sell more stuff is because their stuff doesn't sell during the regular season and gets sent to discount resellers like Marshalls, where for $2.99 you can buy all the Romo jerseys that you want. Jerry Jones overproduces stuff every year because every year he predicts the Cowboys winning the super bowl.

pittsburgh is 6-1 – 49ers are 5-0 – dallas is 5-3 – so the cowboys are ranked third in that area – not americas team as far as i can tell –

Wade set things up at the begining of the season for Garrett fall on his own ass. He (Wade) would be incharge of DF and Garrett solely in charge of OF. Don't know if anyone noticed but they both suck. Garrett in charge? That's unreasonable. My son, dog and yoga instructor could call more indepth offensive plays than Garrett. Oh, it's 3rd down and 2 yards.......People in solitary confinement know your handing it off to Barber. And you know what else? They know and we know what the coaching staff somehow missed.....Barber won't get it!

The term America's Team is a popular nickname in American sports that most often refers to the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League.[1] The nickname originated with the team's 1978 highlight film, where the narrator opens with the following introduction:

They appear on television so often that their faces are as familiar to the public as presidents and movie stars. They are the Dallas Cowboys, "America's Team."[2]
The term is recognized and often used by media outlets, including ESPN,[3] Yahoo!,[4] HBO Sports,[5] and Sports Illustrated.[6]

On their Top 10 show, the NFL Network named the Dallas Cowboys' "America's Team" as the #1 nickname in NFL history

The Dallas Cowboys have sold the most merchandise since 2001, and sold more merchandise than any other NFL team in the 90's.

Ok "America's Team" haters. The name "America's Team" was coined by NFL films in the late 70s. The Dallas Cowboys didin't annoint themselves Americas's Team. When compileing a Cowboys' highlite reel, they noticed that the Cowboys had a lot of fans in every opponents stadium. People are more mobile now, so it's there are fans of the other team in every stadium, even Cowboys stadium, but in the 70s, it was unusual. Hence the name "America's Team". Check Jersey/Team gear sales by team and TV ratings. They're still America's team. Love them or hate them, they still watch.

  13. Really?

There are only 2 sports franchises in the US (of all franchises for the 4 major pro sports in the US) that are head and shoulders above ALL others in popularity nationwide....the Dallas Cowboys, and the New York Yankees...which logically enough, are also the 2 most valuable sport franchises in the US.

Google "Dallas Cowboys", then google "New York Yankees", then google ANY other US sports team you can think of. What you'll find is: "Dallas Cowboys" will return way more hits than any other team, "New York Yankees" will return the 2nd highest number of hits (though substantianlly less than the Cowboys)...then all other teams return WAY fewer hits than the Yankees.
