Wade Phillips out as Dallas Cowboys' coach

[Updated at 5:57 p.m. ET] Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones confirmed in a news conference Monday afternoon that Wade Phillips was out as the team's head coach, and that assistant head coach Jason Garrett will lead the team on an interim basis.

Jones also said he is elevating defensive line coach Paul Pasqualoni to defensive coordinator.

"An in-season coaching change is something that I've not done before. It's something that I was reluctant to even consider as late as this this past week. But at this time I believe … what’s in the best interest of the organization and the fans is a coaching change," Jones said.

Jones previously had said that Phillips would finish the season as coach. But Sunday night's 45-7 loss to Green Bay - moving the Cowboys' record this season to 1-7 - helped Jones change his mind.

"I don't like the way [changing my mind] looks stability-wise as far as our organization is concerned – not my own self, but the organization – but I think [the situation] called for it, and I recognized that after the game that we just weren't playing winning football, and our best chance was to make this change," Jones said. "Now with that, I don't apologize to anybody about changing my mind."

Jones said Garrett would have a chance to secure the job long-term - especially if the team has success over the next eight games - and that Garrett has "the temperament [and] the disposition to affect a culture change."

[Original post] Wade Phillips is out as the Dallas Cowboys' head coach following an abysmal performance by the team against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night, a CNN affiliate and ESPN are reporting.

Many people were expecting the move (some were demanding it), and the search "wade phillips fired" was trending No. 1 on Google on Monday afternoon.

America's Team is off to a 1-7 start, their worst since 1989, after a preseason full of Super Bowl hype. Fans and observers have placed the blame squarely on the team's coaches.

CNN affiliate KTXA in Dallas said offensive coordinator Jason Garrett, an assistant head coach and one-time Cowboys backup quarterback, will take the team's reins.

Phillips, the Cowboy's seventh coach, compiled a 35-24 record in three seasons with Dallas. Only one of those wins came in the playoffs, a 34-14 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in 2009. Phillips' ouster marks the first time the Cowboys have canned a coach mid-season.

Players told CBS 11 that a team meeting was held at 3 p.m. The Cowboys are scheduled to hold a news conference at 4 p.m.

Owner Jerry Jones has repeatedly said that Phillips would finish the season, but after Sunday's 45-7 shellacking in Green Bay, he said there would be "consequences" for players and coaches.

To CSD: Go to hell you ungrateful SOB!! The United States of America has bailed more countries out their own messes than any country in the history of the civilized world. Talk trash about the Cowboys all you want, but leave my country out of it....it's sacred ground..

EXACTLY! No matter who they try to claim started that person doesn't speak for America. Also, no matter who started they run with the BS and include it on merchandise. This is the real reason they are hated; Because they are pompous and ignorant enough to still call themselves America's Team. The 49ers have won 5 and the Steelers 6 yet you don't see nearly as many despise their franchises.

It's about time! Why did it take this long! Hopefully Jason Garrett is just a short-term thing – he's just as much to blame as Wade is. I've never seen a team with less imaginative play-calling and Jason is the offensive coordinator. Great team, loads of talent, but lousy coaching and the worst GM in the league (Jerry himself). Hopefully, Jerry has enough sense not to hire another "yes" man, but that's probably unlikely.

The Eagles are a joke, so is the entire city of Philadelphia, and everyone who lives in and around it. Coming close is the best that the Eagles will be able to say about themselves, they're a gutter team with gutter fans.

      Go Giants!

of course, that doesn't mean they don't suck and won't continue to suck as long as Jerry Jones is GM. The three teams that America has always loved to love, or hate: 1. New York Yankees. 2. Notre Dame 3. Dallas Cowboys.

Yankees are still the most hated/loved baseball team
Notre Dame? Who really cares anymore? They can't recruit the top players anymore. The Mystique is gone.
Dallas Cowboys? See Notre Dame. Tom Landry had 20 consecutive winning seasons to create America's Team. Jimmy Johnson built a dynasty in the 90's.
Jerry Jones has done everything he can to wipe out all that glorious history and to make the Cowboys a national joke.
The only reasons the expectations went up in the last few years was because of the influence of Bill Parcells. He's gone and the Cowboys are done. Jerry still thinks HE won 3 super bowls in the 90s and thinks still thinks that matters 15 years later. A whole new generation of fans has grown up thinking the Cowboys are no different than Detroit. They let them play on Thanksgiving because they're so bad.
    Nothing is going to change.

Only an idiot like Jerry Jones would fire a head coach almost 2/3s of the way through a season. Is he hoping for a turn around or something? Aren't all of the seats at the stadium already spoken for, for the rest of the season? I guess if you build a $1+ billion stadium your number one concern is the sale of tickets and not the performance of the team, and the well being of the team. The Cowboys suck because they had lousy drafts and made lousy off season moves.

The buck stops at the top. Dallas owner should be blamed for the poor results. There are few owners in the league that are capable of taking their teams to the promissland. Dallas, Philla and Washington AIN'T the one. Teams are making huge sums of money and winning the league or the superbowl is not the only thing. The Washington Redskins is the 2nd or 3rd most valuable team in the world and yet the are not winning year after year. Samething with Dallas or Philadelphia. There are few owners that understand the 'Football' side of the equestion but most of them are great marketing people. And that is the problem with teams. We need Jack Kent Cooks to run football teams and creat super teams. So far Dallas, Philla and Washington don't have that kind of owners...

Wow, with that kind of record maybe it is appropriate to call them America's team. Now if Jason Garrett can just hire a bunch of idiots, continue to lose for two years, and continue to blame Wade Phillips, that name will be perfect.

Ok, everyone saw it coming, but after watching that game, it's apparent that it's not only the coaches fault but a couple of the players needs to be blamed for the Cowboys dismal showing. One player actually stopped from tackling which ended in a TD. Come on – you either want to play and play the hard-fought game or get out. Don't only blame the coaches, but the players as well. This team went to the SuperBowl w/out Tony Romo, so they can do it again.

And for the football rulers that be: Don't just send a fine in the mail, that isn't how the players are going to learn – they are going to learn by being taken out of the game the first time and then sit out for a game....they'll learn when they loose 2 games worth of $$$$....just a thought.

Ya how do we address the penalty issue stuff. The Lambeau leap is not excessive celebration, but if 2 Cowboys jump up and chest bump each other or something similar, a penalty flag is thrown. What is that other than stupid.
I agree, eject the player from the game, because they can afford the fine so it doesn't hit home.
