World's tallest Jesus statue completed

Workers in Poland finished erecting the world's tallest statue of Jesus over the weekend, a 170-foot (52-meter) giant that towers over the countryside near Swiebodzin.

"This is the culmination of my life's work as a priest. I felt inspired to fulfill Jesus' will, and today I give thanks to him for allowing me to fulfill his will," Father Zawadzki said after the head was attached by a 700-ton crane, according to a report from the Warsaw Business Journal.

A crane places the head on the world's tallest Jesus statue this weekend in Poland.

The height of the plaster and fiberglass Polish statue surpasses the 40.4-meter (133-foot) Cristo de la Concordia in Cochabamba, Bolivia, and the 39.6-meter (130-foot) Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, according to news reports.

Local officials in the town of 21,000 people hope it will be a tourist attraction.

"More people will visit Swiebodzin and leave their money," Radio Poland quoted Dariusz Bekisz, the mayor of Swiebodzin, as saying.

The cost of the statue was covered by local donations, according to the Krakow Post. It will be officially consecrated on November 21.

I wonder what a statue of Jesus would have looked like if it were erected in East Africs? Or Jerusalem? Or Beijing?

They ordered "Kitsch 170-foot Jesus Statue" from Jesus'-R-Us on the Internet. The one with blue eyes. Now tourists will flock to their village and spend money. They think this is what Jesus would do: tourism.

Damien, Apparently you don't read the bible. Jesus is NOT God, he's a man! SON of God... why would God pray to Himself and call himself a man? and die!?

I like the statue. (my stance)

BOTTOM LINE: You can NOT prove any religion. NONE! So I do not understand arguing, fights, and wars over religion. YOU CAN NOT SCIENTIFICALLY PROVE NONE IT. Nothing. Its simply what you and someone else "believes".

A Little Light – Sounds like Jesus is just as crazy as any other LOON who thinks he is God incarnate.

Looks more like Canute the Great. I like Viking Warrior Kings!
Jesus seemed like a nice enough guy, but I just can't buy into the whole virgin birth Jesus was his own father who became a zombie thing. I'll stick to Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings.
I just hope 200 years from now some person doesn't find those books, take them for "gospel" truth, and create a whole new religion, or religions based on myth and fiction. Now that would be crazy.

I'm glad they put a head on this monstrosity, because I thought it was a statue of John the Baptist!

At least they didn't copy the irritated, dwarf "Gumby Jesus" from Arkansas. Also known as Milk Jug Jesus.

Why is it important to ridicule something that someone thought he should make for his city or state. It's the idea of the artist that created this beautiful object. The Abraham Lincoln statue, statues of soldiers in Washington D.C. etc., Martin Luther King statues, etc. What of them? Why didn't we spend money on the shoeless? What's important is this man's idea or creative mind, just like our own artists here in America...do we stand there and pray to these objects? No, we are amazed at the creation of this statue and that's it.

This is JESUS. Abe never preached a religion that asked you to give everything and help the poor.
