PETA wants Amazon to stop selling guides to dogfighting

PETA wants to stop selling books such as 'The Art of Cockfighting.'

The animal rights group PETA wants to stop selling books about dogfighting and cockfighting, saying the books encourage an illegal and harmful activity the way a recently removed title promoted pedophilia.

PETA said it sent a letter Friday to President Jeffrey P. Bezos, asking him to to pull products from the site that promote animal cruelty in light of the online retailer's decision this week to stop selling an e-book that offered guidelines to pedophilia.

"The Pedophile's Guide to Love and Pleasure" was pulled from late Wednesday, after thousands of angry users posted reviews to the listing condemning its publication and vowing to boycott the site.

PETA pointed out two books on, "The Art Of Cockfighting—A Handbook for Beginners and Old Timers" and "Dogs of Velvet and Steel," as examples of titles that encourage people to participate in illegal animal fighting.

"These books encourage people to become involved in dogfighting and cockfighting— cruel and illegal activities that are rampant across the country," PETA executive vice president Tracy Reiman said in the letter to Bezos.

"Animals, like children, depend on us to protect them and put their best interests above profits. Please, don't be complicit in cruelty to animals: Do the right thing and stop selling products that promote criminal violence against living beings."

PETA said the controversy over "The Pedophile's Guide" created the ideal climate for them to highlight animal fighting - an issue that's always on their radar.

"At a time when Amazon is coming out very publicly against books on pedophilia, this is a prime time for Amazon to step up and stop selling books that promote other illegal activity, like dogfighting and cockfighting," PETA spokeswoman Lindsey Rajt told CNN.

In fact, the two issues are "interconnected," Rajt said

"Animal abuse is one of the first warning signs we see in people who turn and direct violence toward people," she said. "This is really important because the twisted whims of people who enjoy watching animals fight to the death is not something Amazon should be catering to. There are greater societal implications." did not return calls for comment.

I agree 100%. Ban all books promoting animal cruelty. I would not hesitate to boycott Amazon for selling these books.

When people stop mimicking their favorite celebrity felon then I would say society is ready for information on how to torture animals. A Rosa Parks situation today would be illegal, so a book on how to subjugate minorities should also be illegal. Nice try though. What are we gaining as a society by showing others how to hurt each other? Reacting after a crime is worse than preventing one.

Do you like to hunt or fish? Are you a rancher, farmer or outfitter? Do you live in rural America? Perhaps a physically disabled American dependent on modern medicine.Folks these fanatical groups like PETA and HSUS are your enemies. It's to bad many look at these groups as mere "irritants" when they should be looked at as dangerous terrorists organizations and should be dismantled. What we need in this country is "responsible animal rights" not far far extremist "idealogists" and their enacted laws. Many of these radical animal rights types have never been outside a city park and can not concieve most folks love and treat animals and pets very well. This isn't about animal rights this is about extremist animal rights ideaology.Ingrid Newkirk PETAs leader requested HAMAS to refrain from harming animals while murdering Jews and then has the audacity to compare the US cattle Industry to The Holocaust using pictures of concentration camps.Pretty sick if you ask me.

Last time I checked hooking up pit bulls to high voltage didn't yield any cancer treatments. There's also a big difference between hunting to feed your family and running gambling ring that's built around which animal can be bred to kill more effectively. Really I couldn't care less if PETA is behind this or not. They weren't behind the ban on Pedos book either.

Again the Civil War is history. It's a rat sized brain that would miss the point. Promoting criminal activities and reading on how the nation was founded have nothing in common. Last time I checked the North didn't win by sending out legions of roosters with razors attached to their feet. I'm not a liberal either. I'm an independent that doesn't parrot what someone else tells me is right or wrong. Squeek squeek

peta would disagree, but.... i saw a tv commercial the other night that said 26,000 people starve to death everyday. A little later i saw an add for humane shelters asking for donations saying 'thousands of animals have a death sentence everyday' Couldn't help but think we should use the $ from the shelters, butcher the animals, freeze and ship them to the people dying of starvation. What could be more 'humane' than that? Are people more important than animals?

Amazon has the right to choose what they will sell. Hope they make the good choice. That's not censorship. It is not in the Bill of Rights that Amazon must sell an offensive book.

Complaining about chickens fighting? PETA has money and resources to do useful things for humans. Screw the animals.

I agree with PETA. I saw a rep from the organization on Fox News on Friday and I agree completely with their stance. Books that promote illegal animal fighting should be banned from Amazon...especially considering their recent ban on a pedophilia book.
