PETA wants Amazon to stop selling guides to dogfighting

PETA wants to stop selling books such as 'The Art of Cockfighting.'

The animal rights group PETA wants to stop selling books about dogfighting and cockfighting, saying the books encourage an illegal and harmful activity the way a recently removed title promoted pedophilia.

PETA said it sent a letter Friday to President Jeffrey P. Bezos, asking him to to pull products from the site that promote animal cruelty in light of the online retailer's decision this week to stop selling an e-book that offered guidelines to pedophilia.

"The Pedophile's Guide to Love and Pleasure" was pulled from late Wednesday, after thousands of angry users posted reviews to the listing condemning its publication and vowing to boycott the site.

PETA pointed out two books on, "The Art Of Cockfighting—A Handbook for Beginners and Old Timers" and "Dogs of Velvet and Steel," as examples of titles that encourage people to participate in illegal animal fighting.

"These books encourage people to become involved in dogfighting and cockfighting— cruel and illegal activities that are rampant across the country," PETA executive vice president Tracy Reiman said in the letter to Bezos.

"Animals, like children, depend on us to protect them and put their best interests above profits. Please, don't be complicit in cruelty to animals: Do the right thing and stop selling products that promote criminal violence against living beings."

PETA said the controversy over "The Pedophile's Guide" created the ideal climate for them to highlight animal fighting - an issue that's always on their radar.

"At a time when Amazon is coming out very publicly against books on pedophilia, this is a prime time for Amazon to step up and stop selling books that promote other illegal activity, like dogfighting and cockfighting," PETA spokeswoman Lindsey Rajt told CNN.

In fact, the two issues are "interconnected," Rajt said

"Animal abuse is one of the first warning signs we see in people who turn and direct violence toward people," she said. "This is really important because the twisted whims of people who enjoy watching animals fight to the death is not something Amazon should be catering to. There are greater societal implications." did not return calls for comment.

Hello everyone I feel that we need to leave Peta alone & worry about the main problem animal abuse dog fighting how can any human being in their right mind write publish & read about dog fighting or any kind of animal abuse the only humans who approve of this are humans who are heartless which tells me today their for animal abuse tomorrow they might slaughter a baby so don't focus on Peta focus on all the innocent animals that suffer due to abuse

This is an interesting discussion about the ethics of Amazon's decision. On a more practical level, I am glad they removed the book. I happen to sell products on Amazon and the holiday season is upon us. I was concerned that selling a book on how to molest children might send the wrong message.

The Slippery Slope has struck once again...we started with one (admittedly horrible and disgusting) book, and now we'll soon have to deal with every other Tom, Dick & Harry that wants to ban something that offends their sensibilities. That's the whole purpose of having Freedom of Speech-you either allow all of it, or you end up censoring and censoring until free thought dies. And yes, I do think dogfighting is wrong, so let's not go there.

The difference lies in the legality of the content. Pedophilia doesn't just contradict my sensibilities, it's a reprehensible and illegal act. Opinion is one thing...advocating and teaching how to violate the law, molest children, and get away with it, is another.

@phatslim: I understand your opinion, and am inclined to agree, but there's books that explain, endorse and glorify other crimes like pimping, drug dealing, terrorism, genocide and all sorts of other crimes on Amazon as well. If we got rid of books that helped teach or inspire people to be criminals, I'm afraid we wouldn't have much of a selection. Honestly, by censoring the book, we've helped that pedophile sell more copies (notoriety is good publicity).

banning books because they are illegal is generally a bad idea, sets a bad precedent. laws are written by corrupt politicians.

This organization is just way to full of freaks.Lets get real the average person loves and treats their pets well. You would think any organization that champions animal welfare would be well liked but the reality is far less admirable.PETA is so extremist that most folks simply can't stand them.If it wasn't for the deep pockets of celebrities PETA and HSUS would cease to exist and thats a fact.

Having a pair of balls can mean standing up to social pressure to censer ones' self and standing for free speech, but in this case it means having the stones to ban ( not from society, but from their own virtual shelves) books on doing immoral, illegal and thoroughly terrible things. Things that are all too common and real.

Using the same logic (of cruelty to animals) do we ban books on hunting, or cooking shellfish? Lets face it PETA would ban all cookbooks involving meat if they had their way.
Using the logic of banning books that "bring harm to children" do we ban books like Mien Kampf, or because it's just Jewish children and includes adults as well then it's ok?
Do we ban books about how to grow/make drugs? That’s illegal, many cause harm to children as the huge number of kids in the foster care system prove. How about books on explosives?

Who gets to determine the non-existent line of where legal ends and illegal begins? If it was so easy we wouldn’t need the mega-industry that is our modern legal system.

Bob, that's not logic at all. It's not cruelty to animals that sets them apart, it's that they are ILLEGAL activities, like pedophilia. I don't disagree or agree with what happened here, but you are definitely missing the logical reason that PETA put forth this request... And ignoring it for some sensationalist assumptions about how other books about "animal abuse" will be "banned".

How about, instead of personal insults, we attack the arguments.

Deb doesn't seem to have any arguments. Deb, do you have an argument to make? Also, many are claiming that PETA kills animals. Is this true? If so, please explain. If not, please dispute it. If you have any evidence to dispute it, please share.
