California court rules illegal immigrants can get in-state tuition

The California Supreme Court has ruled unanimously that illegal immigrants may continue to receive in-state tuition at California colleges and Universities.

The decision overturns a lower court ruling.

In their ruling, the state court said California law specifically guarantees in-state tuition, a lower price, for students attending local schools for at least three years.

In their ruling, the court said that state law does not conflict with federal prohibitions for educational benefits for illegal immigrants ased on residency.

This story is developing. We'll bring you the latest information as soon as we get it.

The only native American I know was Pocahontas. She turned out to be JLO. So we all need to shut up and help this country develop more.

Have you noticed the difference between Legal and (I)Llegal is mostly I? Stop being selfish. Every American is an Illegal immigrant if he/she is not a red Indian. We are all illegal immigrantsz. You're just a senior one. Your ancestors stole the land. If you really wanna talk about fairness. Give the land back to the Indians. O/w shut the f. Up!!!

Ok that's a fair argument HOWEVER if that were the case than I a white female who was born and raised and still lives in Texas should be able to go to college in Cali and pay in state tuition just because "technically" my ancestors and therefor myself am an illegal immigrant. Do you agree with that?

What a great decision! So legal domestic/international students who are forced to pay out hefty out of state tuition even if they meet residency requirements can sue the cr@p out of the state. Someone wants to keep the lawyers employed.

Well some of these students are smarter than most of you and deserve an education. For some of these students it wasn't their fault that they are in this country to begin with. So to say its not fair its further from the truth. Specially seeing as how half of you guys were misspelling simple words like college. Let's stop being hippocrites and start think as humans.

what??? what?? WHAT?!!?!?! why was this even in a court.... why are we spending billions of dollars on patrolling the borders? why should someone who is not even supposed to be here get to play less money for MY education? This doesnt make any sense at all. Im moving to Canada.. screw the US.

by all means charles get out of here. you people only love to follow the rules and obey the law IF AND ONLY IF it is convinient for you. pointing out that illegal immigrants shouldnt be here and be arrested. OKAY CONSUMING ILLEGAL DRUGS IS ILLEGAL, I SAY ARREST ALL THE CITIZENS THAT CONSUME OR HAVE CONSUMED ILLEGAL DRUGS, THAT WOULD PROLY BE 95% OF THE WHOLE UNITED STATES. I BET MORE THAN HALF THE PEOPLE THAT COMMENT ON HERE DO DRUGS

That's exactly what I've stated on other occasions! I for one have never taken any illegal or even any alcoholic beverage for that matter. Wonder how many other people can say the same? Of course in a matter like that it's okay to disobey the laws, right?

with all of the corruption going on in California maybe these judges was paid off secretly, who knows, this was a very stupid decision, thats why illegals keep coming to this country because they know that our Government is doing this, I bet you cannot go to Mexico and do this!

Unbelievable, but does not surprise me coming out of CA. I think every one of those Supreme Court judges need to be fired and replaced with people that have some COMMON SENSE! This is what I get and see after protecting this nation for 28 years – a bunch of idiot judges who obiviously live in a bubble.

  11. An American Citizen

So Illegal immagrants get in state tution... but LEGAL American Citizens from another state will have to pay more.. that makes sense. Make it harder for americans to get an education... go figure.

In-state tuition is basically a discount for students (or rather the students' parents) who have paid state taxes that pay for state-funded colleges. Out-of-state students (and their parents) haven't paid any Cali state taxes so do not get the discount. If illegal immigrants have lived in Cali for 3 years and were paying taxes the whole time, it makes sense that they would get the in-state tuition before new out-of-state students. From the article, it seems like an out-of-state student can also get the in-state rate after 3 years.

Maybe we should drop California as a state and call it Calixico, because as far as I'm concerned they have totally betrayed all the LEGAL CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

    Wait, what?

People illegally in this country can get in-state tuition in California?
    That's absolutely nuts.

By being here illegally, they have already broken the law. So why do we continue to grant them rights and free passes?

Oh, that's right. Because a very vocal minority makes it the big thing, the media picks up on it and someone screeches that we are discriminating. Yes. We are – against people who have already broken the law.

What a lovely signal we send to those who wait years to come into this country legally. At this point, why bother?

I knew there was a hidden reason why I planned to get out of California after graduation, I just knew it...

But in all seriousness I find this to be one of the most ridiculous rulings ever. Way to rule out the (legal) international and out-of-state students...
