TSA fights opt-out campaign, looks at new security 'options'

Passengers and pilots have already expressed discomfort with TSA’s revealing full-body scanners and too-close-for-comfort pat downs. Now, at least one is doing so publicly.

Over the weekend, a 31-year-old man refused a pat down at a San Diego airport. After threatening a TSA agent, he left the airport with a $10,000 fine. The cell phone video where he tells a TSA agent, don't "touch my junk," has gone viral.

Homeland Security Chief Janet Napolitano is speaking out, too. She wrote a USA Today column defending pat downs and scanners and asking passengers for their patience.

TSA Administrator John Pistole, who meets with Napolitano Monday, told American Morning's John Roberts how TSA is changing its tone with passengers.

Pistole responds to passengers planning a "National Opt-Out Day" in protest of the scanners and Capt. Sully Sullenberger's recent comments that he didn't understand the purpose of screening pilots.

those of you who opt out for medical concerns have a real reason. Those of you who think its invasive to go through the body scanners need to understand it will result in being patted down. The machine images show what it would look like if you were in a bathing suit on the beach. Everyone goes through the same process and think before you disrespect those officers. They are doing their job. They don't make the policies, but they have families to feed and go to work everyday and put up with so much bs from the public. Nobody cares what you look like on that screen. Of 5000 passengers a day do you think you stand out? Get over yourselves and start looking at the bigger picture.

Ha. Officers? Please. Even police officers and federal law enforcement agents don't have the right to grab your genitals. This policy is wrong, disgusting and abhorrent.

The terrorists are already in the United States, just waiting. Building up their number. Somewhat like the 9/11 ones did. They were here 2 years before they ran their operation.
Obama is a political fool who believes if we do not racial profile, the terrorists will not attack us. We are the USA, we treat everyone equally so every American is a terrorist.
Furthermore, $150,000 full body snanning machines are unnecessary. Experts all over the world have said this.

These scanners and pat-downs do NOT increase any security. The next logical move is for the terrorist to put the explosives INSIDE their body. If they are willing to die blowing up and airplane, they will not have an issue doing this. They will have their abdomin cut into, explosives inserted, and then sutured closed. They will not be worried about infection or antibiotic because they will be dead in 6 hours anyway. They could even have some of their intestine removed to make more room for explosives because they won't be needing them anymore either. A pat-down and body scan will NOT find that device. If the underwear bomber made it through a metal detctor, then that won't find it either. The ONLY way you will stop the next level of threat is via PROFILING and behavioral/body language analysis. Just like the Israeli's have been doing with great success. There isn't a technological silver bullet. Old fashioned, low-tech profiling/behavior analysis will be the best defense.

Besides...the weapons are already on the aircraft if you know how to improvise. Ask any prison Warden or corrections officer about the weapons that are made\aquired in a SECURE facility and then think about how many more items are let onto a plane, or are alreeady there. Just as locks only keep honest people honest and provide them with a false sense of security, so too do these pat-down/body scanners only provide a false sense of security to the flyers.
Further more: If drug cartels can purchase a DC passenger airplane for $250,000 and load it with 11 tons of cocaine and fly it to Africa, you can bet a terrorist org and do the same thing and load it with explosives instead. All the airport security won't stop a rogue plane from hitting a building, on another continent OR over here.

    C-4, in a condom, in a cavity...
Then I guess we'll all have to be fully x-rayed...
If they are suicidal terrorists they can secret explosives ANYWHERE!
Why is our security so terribly intrusive and Europe's so much less?
Given the differences, you would expect that they must be losing aircraft left and right... but they're not...
So how much additional safety do we get for the additional intrusion...
Based on the evidence- zip... nada, nuffin'
