Hunters nabbed with slain, endangered Siberian tiger

Amur tigers, like this one at the Kiev Zoo in Ukraine, are endangered in the wild.

A rare Amur tiger – one of 300 to 400 estimated to remain in the wild - was killed by poachers near Vladivostok, Russia, an animal rescue group said Tuesday.

The Siberian tiger was found by an International Fund for Animal Welfare anti-poaching patrol in Primorye Province, according to an IFAW news release.

The group says the area (which includes parts of China and North Korea) is home to the last of the wild Amur tigers, which was on the brink of extinction in the 1940s with only 40 remaining worldwide before a vigorous conservation effort.

Four suspected poachers caught with the dead, 5-year-old male tiger were arrested by rangers from the Khasan district of the province, IFAW said. One of the hunters had been injured by the big cat and required hospitalization.

If convicted, the hunters face a maximum penalty of three years in prison and a $20,000 fine, IFAW said.

"We can't save the tigers unless we combat rampant poaching, which is the single greatest threat to the survival of this species," the group’s director, Masha Vorontsova, said.

Governments of the 13 so-called tiger range countries will meet in St. Petersburg, Russia, next week to come up with a plan to save tigers from extinction. Through the St. Petersburg Tiger Summit, which begins Sunday, the governments hope to double the wild tiger population in the next dozen years.

The blackmarket for tiger products was highlighted last month when 25 suspected traffickers in tiger body parts were arrested in a six-country INTERPOL sting. More than 110 pounds of tiger bone – including the animals’  skulls and skeletons – were confiscated.

Chinese tiger-breeding centers have proposed creating tiger farms to cull the animals' body parts, thereby diminishing demand for the products and lessening the chances they might be hunted in the wild. The idea has met with resistance from environmental groups.

I agree with you Joe regarding eating of animals not curing anything except huger pangs.
Our capitalist culture is also responsible for the endemic mass extinction of animals too and we all need to know what animals habitat had to be move so we could eat things like chocolate- because the plants grown for chocolate and other foodstuffs are grown on cleared forest.

You don't really agree with me. Let's see, in recent history which animals have we caused to go extinct in this country? And by what means? Looks like the last animal to go extinct in North America was a beach mouse in 1959. In 2010, they are killing rare tigers over voodoo magic potions that make your wang work. For shame.

Killing animals for food is one thing, but Chinese medicine isn't even proven to work. Much less is it sustainable.

this is one of those stories that just gets my blood boiling to the highest of levels the fact that they are supposed to be hunters and men of the land and here they are taking away from the land one of the endangered species which makes the Eco system and the lands in which they hunt so replenished with the natural rebirth of these beautiful and wild beasts of the jungle which also are needed to go out and kill off the proper amount of other animals which are roaming the lands for its food.
I have absolutely no problem with hunting proper animals for food and the hunting of big game which makes it a thrill and a sport but nit just for the use of it for money and greed, and especially when they are protected and not meant to be hunted in the first place. these hunters need to be taken to a refuge and placed inside a cage with these animals and have them being hunted by the same animals that they are so horribly killing

Look what we've done to the Earth, the atmosphere, the animals.

      Shame on all of us.

@ Joe Six Pack. "Let's see, in recent history which animals have we caused to go extinct in this country? And by what means?"

I understand the point you are trying to make that in this country we are preventing, as best we can, our native animals from going extinct. However, your argument is analagous to someone living on a river dumping chemicals in on the border of their land letting it flow downriver and then pointing out that nothing is wrong with the river right next to their property. Rainforests are being cleared, and entire species killed, not just because the countries doing the clearing are doing it for themselves. More often it is part of the global machine providing goods and services to countries further up the food chain and last I checked we are on top. This particular animal is not something that we covet but you cannot admonish our sins because of that fact. Lastly, I'm sure that your mention of the Beach Mouse is grounded in a fact gleamed from somewhere but I would wager I could find a scientist who could find another animal to go extinct in our country. At the very least I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility to think that we could have easily killed something off before we even had the chance to identify it in the last 50 years.

For the most part I agree with you Joe....

BUT. There has been proven cures from natural healing from herbs... plant materials... none that involve animals parts that I am aware of. Don't discount ALL natural healing. Especially since a vast majority of the "drugs" on the market today are in some form or another plant based. (penicillin, digoxin, spirinolactone, pyrythium, etc)

While I do agree with your example Joe, and the underlying sentiment of your response, Chinese medicine in its entirety is not garbage. The cruelty many Chinese medicinal practices have on wildlife is truly amazing, but in the same vein, even things like draining the bile from sun bears does prove functional and effective. The problem is, rather than trying to update old practices by synthesizing modern equivalents to centuries-old remedies, the poor or uneducated Chinese think they can just go on raping the earth.

Strange how people are opposed to farming them as proposed by the Chinese. If you can farm them, that would eliminate the need to poach the wild ones. It would be nice if you could simply ask people not to kill them anymore or want them for whatever reason, but thats not going to happen. Farm them and let the wild ones grow. That is what they did with Aligator in the SE USA, and now the wild Aligator population is booming.

Why are rare animals are not found in Europe or N America? Because they were all killed long time ago!

So don't blame Chinese culture. The culture actually highly respects the animal. Westerns, on the other hands, tend to be ignorant and hypocritical.

We need to have very severe penalties for poaching on the Siberian Tiger, and we need to enforce those penalties. Not fines but imprisonment for a lengthy period of time, with virtually no room for commutation.

Human beings are the custodians of this planet. When any animal is threatened with extinction due to our actions, it reflects on our lack of responsibility. Question: is there any intelligent life on earth? I have my doubts.

I wouldn't be upset at all if the tiger had mauled them to death. And I don't think the poacher found to be injured should have gotten hospital treatment. Throw him into the wild and let him suffer like the poor creatures he hunts.

I hate it when news stories like this one provide evidence that there are members of the human race unable to focus on anything but their desire of the moment. They probably took this tiger's life so they could mount its head on a wall or sell its skin. Disgusting! If you have so little regard for living things, you shouldn't be set loose on society. You are dangerous.

Now, if you want to say you disagree with their beliefs in the power of animal parts, that's a totally different point. You don't need to insult an entire race to do it.

Now, on the subject of the poaching. They are in Russia, I would think they (the government) can do stuff there and get away with it that we can't do here. In which case, I believe the penalty should be death. That should cut down on the poaching.
