Haiti cholera outbreak spreads to Dominican Republic

The cholera outbreak in Haiti has spread to the Dominican Republic and that nation has issued a maximum health alert, its health ministry said.

The first confirmed case is a 32-year-old Haitian construction worker who returned to the Dominican Republic last Friday with symptoms of the intestinal illness, the health ministry said.

It's isolated on an island... Relax. And even if it does, it's just cholera. This is not middle ages Europe or the Oregon Trail.

Cholera is not directly contagious from human to human. It's spread among humans is via unsanitary water supplies, like using the same streams for drinking water, and for sewage disposal.

Sorry, but you'll have to find some other source, closer to home, for you Armageddon paranoia.

Excuses excuses. Haiti is a forgotten place. It's been stripped of everything worth anything. The French walked away from it over a hundred years ago and now the Europeans are renegging on their commitments. If they had oil they would still be poor because the government would just steal the money. At least Republicans wouls open factories there if there where some law and order. Democrats want to put them all on welfare as if they where some kind of pets. Grow up $$ runs the world..

Oh joy....the apocalyptic nutballs are coming out. This does not prove Nostradamus, 2012ers and Revelationists right. These things happen all the time when there's a lack of sanitation in impoverished areas. Welcome to human reality.

Before dismissing this disease so lightly because we live in the 21st century is not a real good idea. This disease is very easily transmitted via contact with infected people as well as with what they touched and took a dump. There is no cure for Cholera and those with Autoimmune and Immune problems as well as children and the elderly are at most risk for death. Considering all the Human Rights people that have been going back and forth to Haiti, I would be surprised if people in the US had not already been infected and died with no idea that Cholera was the culprit. Recommend folks check out the CDC reports for this disease and beaware of the symptoms which may appear as stomach flu symptoms.

In reply to Bill, this is from the CDC website on how Cholera is spread.

      How is Cholera Spread?
Cholera germs are found in the feces of infected people
Cholera is spread when feces from an infected person gets into the water people drink or the food people eat
Cholera is not likely to spread directly from one person to another

and now they say it will stay and spread for months–soon 2 million infected , then 3, then 4 with hundreds of thousand dead-and who will get the blame "Mother Nature"-so sad the intl community is allowing this genocide to take place–nuff said

Is's not "genocide", it's the direct result of overbreeding, laziness, and stupidity. Why is it so difficult for people to accept that sometimes diasasters are the result of these factors...these people are their own victims.

Load your mags and pack your bags cause 2012 is almost here! Lol... People who are scared by calendars and diseases that spread by poor sanitation make me laugh. If you don't make your coffee with sewage i wouldn't worry about it too much, hemmoragic dengue fever spreading north from mexico is much more of a concern, along with other vector borne illnesses spreading north.

According to your religion, there are no "innocent babies". They are all born in "original sin" and unless and until they are baptized and "cleansed" of this offense, they are damned. Jagg-offs. Always touting half of the teachings of your sordid religion, and pretending the rest of it isn't important. It is one step removed from paganism, literally. Save it for your dimwitted kids.

The start of abortion let to a sharp decline in crime rates. I believe in no fairy god and don’t have a problem with abortion. It serves the greater good of our generation and generations to come. Plus, I believe there is a difference between a ball of cells and a human being. I despise the way you supposedly moral Christians think you have all the answers, and love making sure everyone else follows your ancient, cherry picked, outdated rules. Stay out of our lives and we will have no reason to fight back against your nonsense. If you don’t want an abortion then don’t get one. Leave everyone else to do what they believe is right.

Wth Ken? So you just say forget about this outbreak because they're black?? You deserve to catch it and die. That's a very closed-minded way of thinking about it. I pray that the people in Haiti and the Dominican Republic overcome this, and that people like "Ken" learn to accept everyone...because we aren't going anywhere!! Lol

Is American people aware, how many flights departure from Dominican Republic and Haiti to USA land?

    November 17, 2010 at 8:33 am | Report abuse |
    • WhenDoWeLearn

No, Americans do not care how many flights come here from those areas because we are such a mighty and powerful nation that has enough technology and smarts to get rid of anything that might cause us harm. We're just super smart and above anything like Cholera. I hope you do know that I am being sarcastic.

No, it can't be the next black plague. The only way the bacteria gets into humans is by drinking contaminated water. As long as you don't drink contaminated water, you'll be fine. Sorry.
