Haiti cholera outbreak spreads to Dominican Republic

The cholera outbreak in Haiti has spread to the Dominican Republic and that nation has issued a maximum health alert, its health ministry said.

The first confirmed case is a 32-year-old Haitian construction worker who returned to the Dominican Republic last Friday with symptoms of the intestinal illness, the health ministry said.

It's normal to place an alert when this type of situations happen in any country, this means that we are on alert to prevent a huge outbreak, eventhough one persone entered to DR with colera, you have to admit that it is a hatian national that works here not a dominican, which means that he import the colera from haiti during a vacation trip, the goverment garantee health to dominicans and all tourist this must be inform to the world instead of informing in a irresponsible way to afect oue economy!!!

Cholera is a very treatable ailment. Look it up. Less than 1% of the people who contract Cholera die from it. It is treated with fluids to avoid dehyration and typically does not require antibiotics. The problem in Haiti is that the infrastructure, including clean water, has collapsed.

All these messed up and heartless comments on here and people wonder why we are looked at as a nation of fat, spoiled, selfish crybabies. Maybe we do need a great culling because the human race as a whole is regressing

Did you mean digressing? I would say the human race as a whole is advancing and finally realizing that what's lost is lost. I'm so sick of the US government sticking it's neck out on the line and sending my tax dollars overseas to countries and people that would shoot me in the back (and take my wallet) the first chance they got. Let Haiti trim the fat for a while...

I can't believe that CNN is reporting an isolated case of a person that came infected as a spread. Who benefits from saying this? I am starting thinking CNN is not a credible source for news.

You know how many Americans DO NOT have treated drinking water? Alot including my family we have this thing called a well and it's only 50 ft. deep. And yes it could easily get contaminated. There is a warehouse in Haiti that has enough vaccine for everyone but they are not distributing it. Why?

The bacteria that causes cholera is not found in wells, but if you're worried about diseases in your well water, just chlorinate it. Problem solved.

Listen I currently liv in Puerto Rico and we get allot of immigrants from the Dominican. If by any chance we start getting cases of cholera here then the threat, although a low one given our efforts for clean water, is a real one for US Mainland. One must be vigilant of these occurances.

I'm not suprised the outbreak spread, and it likely will continue to spread at least on Haiti's side. There have been no good solutions put out there to slow it down either.

Look at all these racist, hateful comments. No wonder everyone in the world hates u fat, obese americans, u are hateful and just plain miserable. Soon when CHINA (which is the country that owns your whole country) refuses to take on anymore of your debt and your country spirals back into a reception and eventually a great depression, remember, we will be right here laughing.

Due to the amount of Haitians coming into and out of Florida...it is only a matter of time before we see it here also.

It is sickening to me how unsympathetic some of these posts are and how uncaring Americans have become. Just because it is not in your backyard. I almost hear some of you laughing at this situation. Cholera may not come to the United States but it is killing people. Where is your compassion? Oh, I forgot, you left it in your gas guzzling SUV or your oversized, electric burning American house. This is why people hate America.

did not Jesus said only the father knows Christ return, so all this 2012 predictions should cease in 2012. all that should matter is how serious we take our lives and obedience to the lord. The return of Christ is promised til then the choice is ours to demonstrate our obedience to the lord or to the deceiver
