Setback reported in search for New Zealand miners

A robot dispatched to peer into the New Zealand coal mine where 29 miners are trapped has broken down inside the mine, and families of the men are "extremely frustrated," police said Tuesday morning.

The military-operated robot was expected to be a key part of the search for any survivors. But Gary Knowles, superintendent of the Tasman Police District, told reporters Tuesday morning that the robot's operators told him the probe had stopped operating.

No one has heard from the men - ages 17 to 62 - since an explosion inside the mine around 4 p.m. Friday.

Officials hope they are alive, though they do not know whether the men found a haven or whether parts or all of the mine collapsed.

The families of the missing men were "extremely frustrated" after a Tuesday morning briefing by authorities, Knowles said, "and I can understand their frustration as to the time it's taken to have a rescue."  But he said safety was his paramount concern in the rescue attempts.

A potentially explosive mix of gases inside the coal mine made it too risky for rescue workers to enter, officials said.

This is typical of the NZ government and wealthy class whites ! They ONLY rush to assist in occassions where some of their own little cliques are involved ! Had they sought American assistance or even those from the experienced chilean team.....those miners wouldprobably have been rescued by now ! I have lived in NZ, my kids went to school there for a while and my Mother rests there.....so I do know something about the place !

what are you talking about. They have got US assistance, they have got assistance from around the world. The chilean mine is different type of mine – no dangerous gases to cause another explosion. How many rescuers do you want to kill before deciding that making a plan and assessing the situation is the better idea?

Everything is being done for these men. The country is effectively at a standstill waiting for a breakthrough. They have had assistance form a number of countries including Australia, America, Chile and China. But this situation is nothing like the Chilean disaster. A coal mine produces dangerous gases that gold and copper mines do not, hence the explosion rather than a collapse. The risk of a secondary explosions is enormous and they are avoiding more loss of life by waiting for gas levels to drop.

In addition to what the others have said, those Chilean miners were not rescued in a matter of days. It was a painstakingly-executed plan that took a long time to put together.

Fanta – Please ground your statements in fact. I for sure am curious about what exactly you mean, so long as you can actually wrap your head around the difference between an uneducated, ignorant spew of opinion and the reality of the situation in New Zealand. Don't go posting your pathetic fluff unless you actually have a clue. You really know something about the place, huh? Prove it.

Let me guess Fanta, you are American?! Just because you lived in NZ clearly doesn't make you a NZer, and if you were, you would know that everyone is doing EVERYTHING they can to get them out. But, this is a COAL mine, you have an explosion, you have fire, it will just keep on burning with the coal down there. So why don't you keep your trap shut unless you want to add support. Chances are they are going to pull bodies out of this mine, chances are 29 people may have lossed their lives, what a super time to start raving on like a lunatic.

Fanta, you are clearly talking through a hole in your backside – and it's very offensive to those of us who are from NZ. This has nothing to do with being white (I think you'll find NZ is one of the least racist & corrupt nations in the world), and everything to do with a difficult rescue mission.

Yes, foreign help has been offered & yes, NZ has taken up these kind offers. Instead of spewing forth a bunch of lies, how about praying & hoping for the safe return of these boys & men.

If New Zealand is so non-racist, riddle me this; why were all 29 miners white? Are aborigines allowed to work in the mines?

Fanta, can you make specific examples of the 'NZ government and wealthy class whites' only rushing to there own cliques?
You are so off the mark its not funny, if anything the NZ government favours minority groups. Our welfare system (among the best in the world) favours Maori and pacific islander people.

I think you have had too much sugar, need to calm down and go to bed.

fanta...i don't know what you are smoking and i don't want any...i have lived in New Zealand all my life and do not fall into this wealthy white class you write about...i am guessing you mean people that have money?...
It is really out of line and unfair to talk about the people and the goverment that are trying to rescue the trapped miners...for one the goverment would always try everything possible for the best result for any New Zealander in need..you are way off...even if you do take a twisted view as you have world watching!!!! go back to your hole and dream up some other conspiracy...the world is not against you dude

Why is everyone so against white people? They say we are pregidous. Figure that.
Surviving a coal mine cave in hasn't had the best outcomes over the years. Lets keep our hearts and best wishes towards the survival of these men and off of ridiculous pregidous by some who feel inadequate.

Since this is a coal mine I doubt there will be any survivors. May God bless each and everyone of them.

Get one brave volunteer, a breathing air compressor, enough hose and a mask in which to breathe from. Send him in to look. 29 people may be alive but they will not stay that way if you continue to wait day after day.

What some people might not know is, the Chilean miners are not white, either. They are mostly of South American Indian ethnicity. Also, South America and North America are two totally different continents with completely different governmental structures.

I guess we can not say anything about products made in a far away nation that are made to the lowest standards possible for 0.25 cents per day because it will be censored. I guess I know who is pulling the CNN strings these days. MIC I'm sure.
