Man found guilty of murdering Chandra Levy

Washington intern Chandra Levy was killed in 2001.

[Updated at 12:41 p.m] A jury on Monday found Ingmar Guandique guilty of murdering Washington intern Chandra Levy in 2001.

He was found guilty of two counts of first degree murder. He now faces a maximum penalty of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Guandique is already serving time for attacks on two other women in the park.

Ingmar Guandique now faces a maximum sentence of life without parole.

[Posted at 11:56 a.m] The jury has reached a verdict in the case against the man charged with the 2001 killing of Washington intern Chandra Levy.

It is expected to be announced shortly.

If convicted of first-degree murder, Ingmar Guandique faces a sentence of life without parole. The jury could instead find him guilty of second-degree murder, which could mean 20 years to life.

Earlier, attorneys made their closing arguments in the case against Guandique, who denies he killed Levy, then an intern for the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

"She's been waiting nine years for justice," said prosecutor Amanda Haines, holding up for the jury a poster-sized photograph of the smiling young woman. "It's been nine years, but you need to say the words 'Ingmar Guandique is guilty.'"

Levy's mother was in the spectators' gallery, and at times looked close to tears as prosecutors brought out her daughter's clothing, found at the crime scene in 2002.

Haines told the jury, "You have a roomful of corroboration" for the circumstantial case against Guandique.

That includes the fact Guandique is serving time for two other attacks on women that prosecutors say closely resemble the one that led to Levy's death, she said. Both of those attack victims testified during the trial.

Condit has money and is well connected though, so he'll never see the inside of a jail cell.

From a story a few years back Levy's mother said she doesn't think authorities have done all they can to find her daughter's killer. "I think there were some mistakes in the beginning," she said...Though Condit has repeatedly denied his involvement in her daughter's disappearance, Levy believes he is still relevant to the case. She also thinks her daughter knew who killed her. "I'm a mother and like a mother lion I know what happened," she said about her instincts.

Wow, turned out not so much. We should all bear this in mind when rushing to judge someone.

Too many made-for-TV movies and Perry Mason shows perhapsor just plain foolishness.

Where is the PHYSICAL evidence, jurors?? There is none. Sure, an illegal immigrant; sure, maybe killed someone else. BUT, in this case, they presented no physical evidence. I am not for illegal immigrants, but c'mon man– anyone with 5 common sense will tell you Condit was in on it somehow. Our government and it's henchmen are fully capable of making anyone disappear, and finding plenty of scapegoats along the way. As a citizen of America for my life of 42 years now, I am getting to know our governments judicial system is practically, if not completely, a failure. The ones who get big time, usually don't deserve it, and the ones who don't get big time, usually deserve to die. Innocent until proven guilty is a lie. There is one line that I like that they use, in which tells you exactly their line of thinking. And that is.......ANYTHING you say can AND WILL be used against you. Taking this line literally tells me that it includes your telling the truth, and them using it against you. Nice catch, huh?!?

The slimy liberal had more than his hand in it!
He took advantage of a girl young enough to be his daughter and then hung her out to dry.
Piece of garbage. Glad his district got rid of him.
He and his entire family are crooks and lived for years off the public.

Yeah...I don't know about this "gang member" they found. He's a jerk and deserves to go to prison for the other attacks, but Levy still seems to lean towards the Condit side for me.

There is a way of telling if Ingmar was hired you know, a good investigation and background check will normally tell if he really did it . A plea goes a long way.

This story ran for weeks and weeks until 9/11. Over the years I have thought of her parents and loved ones. Nothing will ever heal their hurt and sooth their pain, but I hope the arrest, trial and verdict will help them. What the Levys have endured is just about my worst nightmare come true.

Condit didn't have a Motive to kill Chandra. if you have an extra marital affair that is the first thing you wlill not do. to kill your partner. Condit is innocent. resigned his post to save his family and reputation not to avoid justice.

Only a loser can kill Chandra but not Condit

Condit was scrutinized to the millionth degree. If he had *any* involvement in this at all, no matter how small, they would have pinned it on him. Just because he had an affair with her doesn't mean he killed her.

Was he really? Says who, the media? Suppose just the scandal was enough to force him out but there was no real investigation of him at all? Or he was given a pass because he was a congresscritter? (Remember Ted Kennedy?)

One fact is not in dispute: another wetback realized the American Dream...a lifetime of support via US tax dollars.
