All-clear at Boston airport after package scare

[Updated at 2:39 p.m.] A security scare at Boston's Logan International Airport ended with an all-clear after the two bags that triggered the alert were found to be harmless, Massachusetts State Police said Tuesday afternoon.

[Updated at 1:45 p.m.] Massachusetts Port Authority spokesman Phil Orlandella tells CNN the evacuation was sparked by a canine unit getting a "hit" on two duffle bags.

The bags had not been loaded onto a plane, Orlandella said.

[Posted at 1:28 p.m.] The cargo building at Boston Logan International Airport has been evacuated as authorities investigate a suspicious package, Massachusetts Port Authority spokesman Phil Orlandella told CNN.

He would not say what about the package sparked suspicions. The cargo building is not near passenger terminals and airport operations are unaffected.

The Massachusetts State Police, State Bomb Squad, Boston Fire Department and Logan Fire Department are all responding to the investigation, Sgt. Matthew Murray of the Massachusetts State Police told CNN.

This story is developing. We'll bring you the latest information as soon as we get it.

10:40am CA time...seriously, in this whole great country can you not find a person who can actually speak and read the news without stumbling and misspeaking? One minute people are hurt in S. Korea, the next they are dead! All this chummy talk is ridiculous and demeans the news. And the blonde can't even read her lines...and I'm a blonde, so it's just embarrassing!

TSA has lost all credibility, I wouldn't believe them if they marched a 'suspected terrorist' down the streets.

Which part of "cargo building" or "Massachusetts Port Authority" or "not near passenger terminals and airport operations " did you not read? The TSA was not involved in this incident. Not that they haven't lost a lot of credibility (if they ever had any to begin with) but please read the article BEFORE you post your comment.

This is a double edged sword. It is designed to keep us safe, but safe from whom? Terrorists of course. Is an 8 yr old white boy a terrorist? Probably not. Is a 25 yr old middle eastern looking male a terrorist? Probably not. Has an 8 yr old white male ever flown a plane into a building, or tried to explode a shoe bomb on an airplane? No. Has a 25 yr old Middle eastern male ever done those things? Yes. Profiling is the answer. As much as the liberals will whine and complain that profiling is racist, it works. IT WORKS! So, be selective in who gets the "extra special touch" and select those people that fit the profile. If they complain because their "rights" have been violated, give them a ticket back to their home country. The only way to get the TSA to relax their new procedure is simply to stop flying. That will put pressure on the airlines who will in turn put pressure on the TSA.

If profiling works as you claim, how would we have stopped Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols? Or David Koresh? or Ted Kaczinsky? get the point.

Your reasoning is a little kunkeled, Kevin. Terrorists would find the unprofiled types and use them as "mules." Makes more sense to screen everyone, even if–for now–it seems like overkill. (So to speak.)

Seeing as how McVeigh did not involve a plane, he would not have gone through any screening anyways, so you are just presenting a red herring.

It's a pity most of you have no clue what profiling means and the success countries like Israel has had with it. If Israel stopped and searched every person that looked like they were from a "Middle Eastern Country" not many people would make it through their airports; and yet they do, quite efficiently I should add. Profiling is about observation and the use of questions, observing the mannerisms of people entering the airport area; all the way out to the parking lot. Instead we employ the TSA: Totally Stupid Americans approach, yank screaming kids out of strollers, grope the elderly all to make us safer...but it get's even better...I can't take nail clippers on a flight but if I fly first class I get something that looks a lot like a knife to cut my juicy steak, and I can't take more than 100ml of fluids in my carry on but I can stock at the duty free liquor store once past security and buy a gallon of 151 rum...which is primarily??anyone? alcohol..wonder would happen if me and a few friends loaded up with rum and say dumped it down the lav? anyone got a match? Ya we're really much safer with this new level of politically correct security

absolutely right – the only reason we don't do intelligent procedures likeprofiling (and how the Israelis have been doing it very successfully for many years) is because of the whining liberals and their Political Correctness Police

It wasn't all that long ago that mainstream Christianity cut back on killing people that practiced other religions. The main difference was that Christians?Baptists?Lutherians?Episcapalians preferred burning people at the stake because it wasn't as quick and painless as beheading.

This whole deal is just more "feel good" (pardon the pun) baloney. If they are only scanning, or feeling up, 3% of us folks, how does that really stop anyone??? Those are better odds, for the terrorists, than Vegas offers.

The "terrorists" don't need to do another thing to cripple this country. All we do is cower in fear of another attack and move closer to the day when our empire crumbles under its own weight.
