Opt-outs largely no-shows at airports

The controversy over new security measures at airport checkpoints - which some feared would boil over on Wednesday, one of the year's busiest travel days - instead didn't even reach a simmer.

Critics had declared the day before Thanksgiving "National Opt-Out Day" and urged travelers who are selected to undergo full body scans to refuse to subject themselves to the advanced imaging technology.

Anyone who refuses a scan is checked instead by the more time-consuming "enhanced" pat-down procedure. Security lines at busy airports nationwide could be snarled if a large number of people opted for the pat downs, and the Transportation Security Administration said it was as prepared as possible to deal with any resulting delays.

It might be a little premature to conclude anything from this. Reports are coming out from a few links off the drudge report and other places saying many of the body scanning machines were either not used or even turned off. Opt-outs were therefor not even possible and travel would have obviously gone much more quickly. It also raises the question of how important are these scanners if they can go unused on the busiest travel day. I would like to see CNN cover this.

i agree. This has been a non-story from the beginning. That's what happens when we have a slow news week.

scanning and x-ray's do not keep us safe--if so, the Israeli's would have implemented the system--anyone who think's what tsa is doing will keep us safe is, either delusional or stupid-these things will not dissuade the terriorists, only make them more creative--we can learn a lot about safety from the Israeli's--I suggest we ask them-

Another media farce that tried to make something out of nothing! Always talking to those who scream the loudest instead of listening to what is really going on around them.

Thats right let the TSA make sure you don't even have a nail clipper. So when the terrorists take the next plane they'll be sure nobody can resist them in any way..

@wally: I agree completely about Israel. They interview every passenger multiple times from that person's arrival through boarding. I still don't object to body scans though and I'm sure the Israeli's still use some electronic screening. Israel probably doesn't have nearly enough volume of people flying for all the interviews to make sense here. We have so many airports with so many people flying at one time that it would take forever to interview that many people. I also find it funny that the "don't touch my junk" crowd chose to get on their flights more quickly than get their 15 minutes of Youtube fame. I still think pilots and crew should be checked like everyone else.

Prisons have much more comprehensive scanning technology and intrusive search methods for visitors, and contraband still gets through. No level of security that the public will accept (body cavity searches, anyone?) will keep someone who is both clever and determined from carrying out harmful intentions.

Unless you can disprove the statement above, these new scanners and pat-downs CANNOT be said to increase our safety in the least. What happened to "give me liberty or give me death"? You sheep.

How is going through pat downs/ scans infringing on your rights? I agree its not failsafe at all, but as long as they aren't sticking a probe where the sun don't shine, I don't see what the fuss is about.

@JL: so you suggest they do nothing? No screenings at all? Nobody is infringing on your "liberty" to see the world. If they did nothing at all then you'd hear many people whining about their incompetent government. It sounds like you want your liberty and death served to you at the same time. I'm good on that philosophy, but thanks though.

Hand out the .9mm handguns to all passengers

Then collect them back when the flight is over

this is another obama administration big brother taking over the people's liberty.. riddle me this.. why do pilots have to go thru security? do they need a boxcutter to take over the plane.. they are flying the plane if they want to crash it they don't need the boxcutter to take over the plane..

As I posted in the main story, these statistics are garbage. The airports with the most egregious overuse of scanners (SJC, for example, which now uses these things for primary screening of approximately half of all passengers) SHUT DOWN their scanners today, according to Gizmodo, and airports with the highest passenger volume screened many, many fewer passengers with advanced imaging than they normally do. This resulted in much lower opt-out numbers than would otherwise have occurred.
