Brazil sends military to violence-plagued Rio

Authorities sent in the military to help authorities quell violence that continued Friday in the slums of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, with criminal gangs torching at least two more buses and five cars before dawn, state media reported.

At the Complexo de Alemao, or German Complex, in northern Rio, some 800 soldiers joined hundreds of police from the Special Operations Battalion, federal police and marines, state-run Agencia Brasil reported Friday.

Police and drug gangs exchanged shots during the night.

Earlier Friday, Defense Minister Nelson Jobim met with the governor of Rio de Janeiro state, Sergio Cabral, and security authorities of the federal and state governments. The Army agreed to make available 10 armored vehicles and the Navy offered three helicopters, according to the news agency.

    The police can not retreat now that have started to go through, because the criminals will feel stronger if this will happen

    Maybe if the world governments destroyed the heroin and cocaine plantations then you'd see less drug gang violence. Nah that's too easy. I just wish the governments would stop the charade. Fix it or don't, but don't pretend like you are trying to solve the issues.

      Whenever there is a drug story in a foreign country people always say some variation of "If the US didn't create so much drug demand... yada yada yada"... Who the hell is using so much cocaine and heroine that it takes 30 countries' drug trade to supply it?

    WHAt the call slums are now neighboorhods and those 'slum' are very close to the turistics points and richier areas!If we had GOOD EDUCATION, NO CORRUPTION, GOOD HOSPITALS , there wouldnt be so much criminals.We have to treat the social virus, the social bacteria, not only the symptoms with aspirine which will hide the causes.Brazil is a country with one of the highests social inequality in the world, and the first country with the highest taxes!! but goverment dont give it back to the population!!! whats going on now here is a lack of infra-structure and social policies joined with corruption that has come from DECADES, for example, beer is said to be forbidden to people under 18 years old, but everyone , children, teenagers can buy alcoolhol anywhere, every street,ever corner has a bar selling liquors, nobody ask for an ID, theres no such things here as "license to sell alcohool, theres no controll at all, furthermore the adds on TV stimulate young people to consume alcoolhol showing young teenages on the beach playing football, surfing, drinking beer, alchool is entrance door to stronger drugs, this is only the tip of the iceberg .Even though they can provide basic human needs as education, safety and infra-estructure, THE BRAZILIAN GOVERMENT think they can hold WORLD CUP AND OLIMPIC GAMES, the shoot guns and the war is very close to the richier areas, turistic points, stadiums and so on... THE WHOLE CITY STOPPED WITH THIS MILITARY ACTIONS, STORES CLOSED, COLLEGES CLOSED, MANY INNOCENTS ARE DYING, i wish the world community could prevent brazil from help those events till they solve their social and violence issues
