FBI: Suspect claimed he wrote jihadist fitness article

A Somali-American teenager arrested Friday on suspicion of plotting to bomb a holiday ceremony in Portland, Oregon, told an undercover FBI employee that he wrote articles published in an English-language jihadist magazine, including a story on fitness, an FBI affidavit says.

Mohamed Osman Mohamud, 19, told the undercover operative last summer that he had written articles for the online magazine Jihad Recollections under a pen name, according to an FBI affidavit filed with Mohamud's arrest warrant.

One of the articles Mohamud claimed to have written was "Getting in shape without weights," which was published in the inaugural issue of Jihad Recollections in April 2009, according to the affidavit.

In the article, the author - identified as Ibn al-Mubarak - writes that jihadists must prepare their bodies for war and "train as hard as possible in order to damage the enemies of Allah as much as possible."

The article implores readers to train without weights, in part because using them is "unrealistic for the Mujahid in the front lines anywhere in the world today," and because gyms are not Islamic environments, with their "music, semi-naked women [and] free mixing."

The piece describes stretches and warm-ups before instructing on ways to sculpt one’s legs (suggestions include walking at least 90 minutes a day, doing interval runs, crawling long distances and sitting against a wall for long periods) and strengthen one’s arms (100 to 150 push-ups per day, pull-ups, walking on hands).

"We find that [weights are] ... a major setback for the Americans and the NATO Crusading army as they cannot go to any battlefront without carrying along with them their bench, squat sets and sometimes even their machines," the article says.

U.S. authorities say Mohamud was arrested in connection with a plan to detonate what he believed to be a vehicle bomb at Portland's Christmas tree lighting on Friday night. He attempted to detonate the device, which was a fake planted by authorities in an undercover operation designed to undermine him, the Justice Department said.

A resident of Corvallis, Oregon, and a student at Oregon State University, Mohamud was arrested on suspicion of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction, the FBI said. He will make his initial appearance Monday in federal court in Portland, the Justice Department said.

The arrest was the culmination of a long-term undercover operation during which Mohamud, a naturalized U.S. citizen from Somalia, was monitored closely as the alleged plot developed, the Justice Department said. Mohamud made the article claim to an operative involved in that undercover operation, according to the affidavit.

Mohamud said he wrote two other articles for Jihad Recollections, and that he also sent an article to another jihadist publication, Inspire, according to the affidavit. The court document does not identify those articles.

U.S. counterterrorism officials have said Jihad Recollections was produced by former North Carolina resident Samir Khan, who those officials now say they believe is living in Yemen. Intelligence officials also suspect Khan is the driving force behind Inspire.

Even when a criminal admits to a crime, the search for evidence does not end. Besides a video from al Jazeera that looks like OBL admitting to 9/11, what evidence do you have?

Why are we letting these people into the US. Unemployement is at 10%, millions of US citizens are out of work and we continue to allow millions of foreign nationals into the US; thats on top of the millions of illegal aliens who violate federal law by unlawfully entering the US!
Then we school them, pay for their health care, etc......
We need to wake-up!!!!! Limit immigration, because its threatening our existence and our stability!!!

That is the queston I would like answered, why is our goverment still allowing the enemy into our country and making them naturlized citizens. Bad enough the goverment isn't protecting our borders from the so called quiet invasion from the Southern borders, they also invite the people who want to destroy our society in the name of an invisable being and offer them citizenship. If our governement want to start a world war by invading other countries they should at least protect our homeland first insteading of playing politician to the world.

simply google "9/11 FBI whistleblowers" and see for yourself the forensic evidence surrounding 9/11. These whistleblowers were originally commissioned by Congress to investigate 9/11, but congress refused to examine their findings in open session. Many of them resigned their lifelong posts with the FBI, CIA, US Customs Service, etc. to form their own group and expose their official forensic examinations to the general public. All of the trade tower buildings that collapsed on 9/11, including the two main towers, were brought down by explosive charges attatched to inner floor truss bolts according to the official investigation.

Now go review the Pentagon's security video of 9/11. You know, the video they refused to release for years because of risks to national security. But thanks to our 'freedom of information act', the Pentagon was FORCED to release the video. Have you seen it? If that's a huge jumbo-jet crashing into the Pentagon I'll eat my hat.

Do the math. Security cameras take a picture (1/60th of a second), they wait 1 second (60/60ths of a second or 4/4ths of a second) and then take another picture. The jet was traveling about 400 MPH (570 feet /second). The jet was 155 feet long. 155 feet / 500 feet per second = 0.27 seconds (about ¼ of a second). The jet required ¼ of a second to pass the camera which waits for 1 second between pictures. The camera took a picture, the jet flew by and then the camera took another picture.
      End of mystery

Ok, the terrorists want to wipe USA off the map. Why are they bothering with bombs of this size? 9-11 was the worst attack and it took 4 jets to pull it off. Let's pretend the bomb this guy wanted to detonate actually blew up and took out 10,000 people... 3 times more than the 9-11 event. There are 310,000,000 Americans. That would be killing less than .004% of us. At that rate, if one of these bombs went off every single day killing 10,000 Americans, it would take over 84 years to get rid of us all. That's assuming we stop breeding and making more Americans (currently being replenished at over 11,000 per day – more than making up for the daily losses). That's also assuming they have the money and time to plan and execute a successful bomb plot every single day. Let's say it costs $5,000 per bomb... a small amount considering you need explosives, detonators, transportation expenses, vehicles, computers, cell phones, and living expenses for participants for each explosion. That would cost the terrorists $155 million. I'm thinking 84 years and $155 million could be spent in a more constructive manner. Even if they started nuking cities, there are 276 cities in America with over 100,000 people. At 140 pounds of enriched uranium per Hiroshima size bomb, you're looking at 19 tons to get rid of all of us – assuming we're all huddled together at ground zero. I just can't see a ton of uranium being smuggled across our borders annually for 20 years – not to mention the logistics nightmare for successful detonation. How hard can it be to get rid of the "American influence" in the Middle East? Just outlaw TV and the internet over there. Or do like the Chinese and ban certain websites and programming. I just think blowing us up a little bit at a time is one of the most roundabout ways of doing things. I dunno.

They can cry racism & profiling and the legal system will give the right away to cause more harm. Trojan war at its best.

I don't think you're nutz. I'd actually like to communicate outside of this forum if possible but don't know how. I agree with Sam; enough of the PC movement, being 'politically correct' is futile against an enemy that has no moral/ethical boundary.
