Report: U.S., South Korea begin war exercises

[Updated at 10:35 p.m.] North Korea deployed surface-to-air missiles to near its Yellow Sea border with South Korea days before joint U.S. war exercises with the South were set to get under way on Sunday, South Korea's official Yonhap news agency reported, citing unnamed government sources.

"[North Korea's missiles] appear to be targeting our fighter jets that fly near" North Korea's Yellow Sea border with South Korea, the source said, according to Yonhap.

South Korea and the United States began assembling ships for joint war exercises Sunday off the west coast of the Korean peninsula in the Yellow Sea, a source at the South Korean Joint Chiefs told CNN.

[Original post, 7:51 p.m.] South Korea and the United States have begun war exercises off the west coast of the Korean peninsula, according to South Korea's official news agency Yonhap.

"The drills started around 6 a.m. Sunday with the USS George Washington joining our warships in the Yellow Sea," an official at the South's Joint Chiefs of Staff told Yonhap.

North Korea had warned of unpredictable "consequences" if the United States fulfilled its vow of deploying the aircraft carrier USS George Washington to the Yellow Sea for joint military maneuvers with South Korea.

Earlier this week, North Korea shelled Yeonpyeong Island, killing four South Koreans. North Korea said the South provoked the Tuesday attack because shells from a South Korean military drill landed in the North's waters. South Korea was holding its annual Hoguk military drill when the North started its shelling, and the South returned fire.

The U.S.-South Korean exercises were planned months ago and are meant to underscore strong ties between South Korea and the United States, defense officials from both countries have said.

If we go to war with China we're screwed, our repayment of debt will be simple redistribution of our countryside to the people we owe.

If any of our other alleys were attacked like this we would be at war, especially with a nation who postures like North Korea. The only reason that nation still exists is because they have the bomb. We will do what we need to to protect Seol, work out the details with China ahead of time, and then we can all say goodbye to the existence of North Korea.

I've been in close contact with a LOT of old military battles (friends) and every single one I've spoken to has had their orders changed to go to the Republic of Korea (South Korea) This is kind of scary considering I have friends in all branches, Navy, Marines, Army, Air Force and they are all looking at deployment. This isn't just war games people The Democratic Republic of Korea (North Korea) has shown in the past that they may have nuclear weapons and if thats the case this could be the beginning of a massive war. They have a standing military of over 1,200,000,000 and have done nothing but flex their military strength in the past.

In my opinion, start monitoring all of the news networks very closely, if you see a headline dealing with this conflict one moment and then its gone the next there is a 50/50 chance that something is happening. The news media doesn't get hyped up over nothing . . . this is an extremely tense situation.

Cbyrd has a point. This is just the begining. I have to laugh at so many of these posts. Don't these people realize that this is supposed to be a conduit to exchange information and ideas? If you call me names I will ignore you. Americans feel this is part of our freedom. If you want to insult me, us, or whatever, who cares, its your right. Why do you feel like you do? That's the question. Tell us. That's how Democracy should work. I may modify my beliefs if I truely hear intelectual answers and discussion. By the way North Korea doesn't have a military of over a billion.

I love Dr. Bad, He shows off the openness, resiliancy and freedom given to us Americans. He can use words that he couldn't use any where else and then he criticizes the system that allows him to do it. I love it! There is just a wonderful feeling an American gets when he sees such hypocracy.
