DHS: Passengers now screened before boarding passes

All passengers flying within or to the United States are now being screened against government watch lists before they get their boarding passes, the Department of Homeland Security announced Tuesday.

The Transportation Security Administration achieved the target a month ahead of schedule, DHS said in a statement.

Screening all passengers was a key recommendation of the 9/11 Commission, the department said.'

And lots of passengers will be barred from flying because they have a name that is identical or similar to somebody on these lists. Why don't we screen people before they buy a ticket? or better, before they enter a travel agency's office?

Wow, it only took ten years to make this happen. I applaud their motivation and ingenuity and raw ability to get things done.

but hey, give'm credit – they did get it done a month ahead of schedule! Now that's the old gov't in action! I know how to get the lists right and accurate (not confusing me with someone else with a similar name, etc) – if the TSA and gov't gestapo organizations screw up and keep an innocent from boarding (after all, as you are in America, you are innocent until proven guilty, you know?), they pay. Maybe as little as for the lost ticket, a new one, and hotel, but they should have to pay. I'm surprised the lawyer piranha's aren't circling like sharks on this one!

It is not cool to put people thru this like they are guilty of carrying something in their belongings! however, we do need to be sure we are flying safely, so what do u do?! just go with the flow i guess. we all had to do something we didn't want to do one time or another in our lives to get what we wanted so i guess this is the same thing!

And no one is any safer now than they have been for the past 10 yrs since 9/11/01

False security, bullsh-t and mirrors for the libs who would rather lose their liberty just to feel all warm and fuzzy

Good ole Sarge. Let's do away with all security. Is that your proposal – why should anyone feel safe. Damn, just rough it – take it like a man! Right?

Geez – Actually – its the repubs taking away all our liberty dufus. The Patriot Act – remember? Surveillance without warrants – Ring a bell? And you fault the dems for protecting us – until a plane get blown up, Then it will be the dems fault for not doing enough – right ole buddy?
      Go get a life!

Duh! What's the point of these "watch lists" if this wasn't already being done? I believe the underpants bomber was identified as on the watch list AFTER HE WAS IN THE AIR. A computer program should be able to identify a potentially dangerous passenger IMMEDIATELY after his/her name is added to a watch list. Unfortunately, from what I've heard and read, these watch lists have been misused and abused. One CNN commentator was put on the list because he did an expose' on screening of passengers.

At what point do the airlines become absolutely livid? I'm surprised they are not yet.

The airlines can only grit their teeth, because they are afraid of government retribution. The FAA can find anything to screw with aircraft airworthiness, flight crew medicals, passengers held too long on the tarmac, and on and on. Guess who controls the FAA? That's right – big brother. They grounded 300 MD80's just for fun after FAA got skewered in front of a congressional hearing. The issue: cable harnesses into the wheel wells were to have laces spaced one inch apart, but some were found as far as +/- 1/4" , no signs of chaffing anywhere. Arbitrary BS, but they have the unbridled power. This is why the airlines just have bottle it.
