NCAA clears Auburn star Cam Newton to play

The NCAA suspended Auburn University football star Cam Newton for one day during an investigation of recruiting violations, but the Heisman Trophy candidate's eligibility was reinstated Wednesday.

Newton's father, the Rev. Cecil Newton, and another person, who wasn't named, tried to market Newton "as a part of a pay-for-play scenario in return for Newton's commitment to attend college and play football," the NCAA said.

Auburn has limited Newton's father's access to the athletic program and Mississippi State - which tried to recruit Newton - has cut off relations with the other person.

Auburn's football team is undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the BCS poll, thanks largely to Newton's running and passing, but pay-to-play allegations have dogged the team all season.

The NCAA investigation concluded that although his father violated the rules, the player did nothing wrong and should be allowed to continue to play.

"The conduct of Cam Newton's father and the involved individual is unacceptable and has no place in the SEC or in intercollegiate athletics," said Mike Slive, Southeastern Conference commissioner. "The actions taken by Auburn University and Mississippi State University make it clear this behavior will not be tolerated in the SEC."

These comments are hilarious. What kind of stake do all of you butt hurt morons have in this? I mean i know the bammers on here are still a little sore from giving up a 24 point lead home, but what's with all the SEC bashing? They've had the NC trophy the past 5 years, 6 teams in the top 25 and the number 1 team in the country.Get over it, no other conference has held a candle to them since 2004 in my opinion. But I guess most of you know for a fact that Cam Newton is guilty of taking money to play and are treating it like it's the worst atrocity to be commited by a student athlete in the history of the NCAA. Guess what, LaMichael James was arrested for strangulation in the spring and is still getting heisman recognition, raise your hand if that makes sense. If he wasn't standing in Cam Newton's shadow, that'd be what all you idiots talk about.

Bama fans are fun but AU fans are white trash. I do not care for either team but we have played both of them on the road and Auburn is backwoods.

To lump any fan base together into one ball is always a mistake made by uneducated idiots. I graduated from Auburn, so this makes me white trash? I'm sorry what prestigious school did you recieve your degree from where every alumnus/alumna and fan are perfect?

it seems fairly clear to me. let's say that i simply pick a 5-star high school player and go to an elite program like Auburn and say that i want $500K for his services. Auburn says "no" we don't play that game. why would that player be ruled ineligible?

Not Getting Paid? Full 4 year to a major university probably worth 100k to 150k. I'd say thats payment plenty.

As a oregon fan, I want Cam to play. I want to beat Auburn with him on the field. Any other victory would be cheap.

Here's what's going to happen: 2 years from now, an Auburn alum on his death bed is going to come clean and admit he was the one who funneled 250 grand to Pa Newton in order to get the services of his son (but it's okay because it was a religious contribution). The NCAA will strip Auburn of their winnings for that year. Li'l Newt will have to hand back the trophy and the Heisman will officially become a joke (unoffically, it's been that way for a long time now). Place your bets.

I'm not white trash. And I attend the school. Auburn has a great Engineering program. What reason do you have to harbor resentment against Auburn? I certainly do not belittle the other schools of the SEC. Contain your hatred. It's highly asinine to find yourself superior to other Americans.

Oh and by the way for all you "give Reggie Bush his Heisman Back" cry babies ... Reggie and family were living in a house paid for by someone else ... can you spell PAPER TRAIL ... easy to prove and it took 5 years because the NCAA didn't want to bring all the negative publicity and cry babies from all the other universities out to mainstream USA ... This goes on everywhere and I mean at every college in america ... none of you cry babies support a clean university ... the rules are stupid and that is why there will always be someone trying to pay for play

Folks players have always been paid its been going on for the last twenty years. Some get caught and some don't. I am not an Auburn fan so who cares. Your favorite player on you college team or your team standout has been paid too already but you just haven't heard about it. Get over it.........
