NCAA clears Auburn star Cam Newton to play

The NCAA suspended Auburn University football star Cam Newton for one day during an investigation of recruiting violations, but the Heisman Trophy candidate's eligibility was reinstated Wednesday.

Newton's father, the Rev. Cecil Newton, and another person, who wasn't named, tried to market Newton "as a part of a pay-for-play scenario in return for Newton's commitment to attend college and play football," the NCAA said.

Auburn has limited Newton's father's access to the athletic program and Mississippi State - which tried to recruit Newton - has cut off relations with the other person.

Auburn's football team is undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the BCS poll, thanks largely to Newton's running and passing, but pay-to-play allegations have dogged the team all season.

The NCAA investigation concluded that although his father violated the rules, the player did nothing wrong and should be allowed to continue to play.

"The conduct of Cam Newton's father and the involved individual is unacceptable and has no place in the SEC or in intercollegiate athletics," said Mike Slive, Southeastern Conference commissioner. "The actions taken by Auburn University and Mississippi State University make it clear this behavior will not be tolerated in the SEC."

Eric Ramsey, youtube it. LOL. If Florida is soooo bad then why does Auburn rank #2 in major NCAA infractions? If they are such a great team where are the National Championships and SEC Championships? Like I said, a 5-19 coach comes in and bam, top 5 recruiting class. Why does Auburn love the Florida leftover Newton, we all know his heart is still in Florida. LOL. Does AU want us to kick get rid of more players on our team so they can recruit them? You guys seem to love shady people in Auburn. I can see why, because there is nothing else to do there but go to games or talk about football. Guess you guys have to have something to do between hauling pulp wood.

Ohhh you're just upset it's getting too cold to wear jean shorts. Don't be angry at Auburn or it's fans because of your surprisingly pathetic football season.

So much hate, Price. So much. I'm very curious to know what the underlying reason is for your hate.

First, Auburn isn't #2 in major NCAA violations. They have seven. So do many, many other colleges. The SEC, in general, is #2 in violations. That includes your school.

Second, Cam Newton's heart may be in Florida. But his stats aren't. You can have his heart.

Third, somehow a person who has a job hauling timber is to be looked down on in your book. What total nonsense. Especially given the state of our economy.

All Auburn fans have to do is talk football? And yet we find you, the consummate Gator fan, on a page about Cam Newton spending your free time trashing Auburn. How entirely ironic.

Ok, I am a Bama fan (Roll Tide Roll) but I hope he Brings it home to the great state of Alabama (SEC)! I don't care who did what, it happens all the time! He is an extremely good player and everyone is hating on him for that very reason.

Aside from the story itself, reading all the comments posted here has been quite amusing. How on Earth did you graduate with all this poor grammar and abhorrent spelling? You must have been on a football scholarship. Don't you realize the legitimacy of what you have to say goes out the window when your communication is riddled with mistakes? Dust off your dictionary, open it up and look up the word "proofread."

Tsk tsk tsk. Some of you trying to blame Cam for his father's actions. On that same note, you going to blame Mark Ingram for his father's actions?

Congrats Shilly. You win the "Most Ignorant Comment of the Year" award. If anything, Mark Ingram should be commended for rising above his father's image. You should check Ingram's background and compare it to Cam's. Auburn accepted Cam Newton despite his criminal record and the academic charges he was convicted of at UF. No one really expected any less of AU though since it was only a few years ago that it was leaked that psychology professors were giving A's to football players that didn't even attend their class. Hey Auburn! You're the laughing stock of the nation. Again.

Ahh...the bigger picture....Newton gets pulled and the whole BCS b.s. goes up in smoke when the rankings change. More NCAA smoke and mirrors.

Is this a major life change? Or a minor one?

I can't believe one ruling would force a major life change. I would steer clear of ESPN, though. Especially in the fall.

Will everyone chill please. The real question should be why the heck is Bernie Madoff's family and friends getting off so easy on his billion dollar scam? This Cam / Auburn is small peanuts compared to that. Why don't you guys get mad at that!

The NCAA has jusy opened a can of worms that assures that College football players will get paid from now on. All they have to do is make sure that the money goes to the player's family...

The media is ridiculous, maybe they should start reporting facts instead of dreamed up propaganda. I do not understand how some from the Media who are on campus and in the locker rooms, can’t report the facts, instead they center a story on Cam and his father and not the people who will actually throw money at the athletes. Journalism as a profession really needs to be looked at closely.

Monkey?! Wow. John It's obvious that you are a sad, unhappy person. In addition you seem jealous of someone that you do not even know...You must think that b/c you earned a degree that you deserve a better salary than Mr. Newton. I think that you believe deep down that you are the true looser that "played by the rules" and didn't get to win. Awww. Get over yourself and concern yourself with things that really matters. Be a force toward keeping US jobs in the US so others like you have a place to work once they earn a degree. Then you will be able to more easily afford to be entertained by the likes of Mr. Newton.

"The actions taken by Auburn University and Mississippi State University make it clear this behavior will not be tolerated in the SEC."

In what way!?!? By having no consequences? By letting the player and his family get away with it? okay...

    • Ben

Exactly. Letting this kid play proves that this behavior is just fine in the SEC.

And it also proves that the NCAA treats the SEC differently from everyone else. If this happened anywhere outside of the coddled SEC, the NCAA would bring the hammer down. The NCAA makes bundles off of the SEC...because college football **owns** places like Alabama and Mississippi where there's nothing to do but date your cousin and follow college football.
