World Cup hosts announced: Russia in 2018, Qatar in 2022
[Updated at 10:42 a.m.] FIFA's World Cup will be held in Qatar in 2022, the governing body said in a press conference Thursday.
The tiny, wealthy Middle Eastern nation beat out the United States, Japan, South Korea and Australia to host what will be the largest sporting
event in the world in 2022. Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al-Thani, the son of Qatar's emir and head of the emirate's bid team, said he was looking forward to the first time a Middle Eastern nation hosts the event.
"Thank you for believing in change, for expanding the game and for giving Qatar a chance. You will be proud of us – and you will be proud of the Middle East. I promise you this," he said.
FIFA president Sepp Blatter confirmed that the ruling body's desire to grow the sport around the world played a big part in the committee's thinking.
"I have to say thanks to to the executive committee because for 2018 and 2022 we go to new lands, because the FIFA World Cup has never been in eastern Europe or the Middle East. So, I'm a happy president when we speak of the development of football," he said.

The Russian government has pledged billions of dollars to build new stadiums and infrastructure. A tournament in Russia would also open a huge, relatively untapped market for FIFA, which has awarded World Cups to South Africa in 2010 and Japan and South Korea in 2002 for similar reasons.
Russia beat out England and joint bids from Spain/Portugal and Belgium/Netherlands to host what will be the largest sporting event in the
world in 2018. It will be the first time the contest has been held in eastern Europe.
Russian prime minister Vladimir Putin decided against attending the ceremony in Zurich, but his deputy Igor Shuvalov was present to accept the
first successful bid from Eastern Europe.
"You have entrusted us with the FIFA World Cup for 2018 and I can promise that you will never regret it. Let us make history together," he told the
assembled delegates.

WOW lots of cry baby Americans!! I love it. Russia and Qatar I cant wait! Qatar is not part of the UAE also there are terroirists from there. Your old president and the one you have now have been trying for years to try to get oil and gas from Qatar. To bad they are so rich they dont need you America! I love it. Oh, sweetie... I'm not crying about not having the World Cup in the US. It's because the games are being held in unsafe places, and I cannot go! There were many decent options available.

CNN, please take down the silly commentator about the World Cup event, when he has confessed not to even care about "footbol"... and for his knowledge, "soccer" is an American make-up word, in the English (original from England) language, the first sport (and even makes more sense because the ball is kicked with the player's FOOT) is FOOTBALL (whether you like it or not). I am not going to defend FIFAS against possible corruptions rumors, etc... but as Americans we can not be a sawer looser and just in a discriminatory way call other countries unprepared or even worse: terrorist countries (like some monkey did here above) Congrats to Russia and Qatar!
Why do you "soccer" fanatics want us to call soccer football? American football is the greatest sport in the world. Soccer is one of the most boring sports. You people get so excited over 1-3 goals a game. You say soccer players are better athletes. You think soccer is more meaningful. That is all foolish.
the origination of the word "soccer" is actually English (England). While Americans embrace it, it started as a slang word for Association Football in England.

I have attended the last two WC and plan to go to Brazil . To Rusia, not sure. But Qatar? What the F–? No way I'm going. Money talks. Australia was my first choice for 2022.

Based on these decisions, I have a feeling that when the WC comes to North America, it will be hosted either by a group of Caribbean nations or, say, a group of the smaller Central America countries (e.g. El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Belize). The only way I see USA hosting again is if it's a joint hosting with Mexico, with the final in Mexico City, and somehow I don't see most USA soccer fans agreeing to that.
It will never be joint held because we have on need to build large stadiums soccer specific only. We may build a home stadium but all you need is Cowboys stadium. enough said

Qatar will have AC in every stadium cooled by solor powered watar cooling system. You will be able to drink there they have already said that. They dont drink but will allow others to drink. WOW there is a reason not to give them the world cup because they dont drink. Have you ever been outside of your trailer park? They country is kicking your countries ass in every way and dont need to invade other counties or talk how many nukes they have. You may want to read there entire bid before posting it had nothing to do with bribes. I am sure the US tried to bribe just like they did to get the Salt Lake Games remember that? go to wikipedia and see why Qatar was selected. also consider the close proximity to Dubai which is a convergence zone for traders from Europe, Asian, Middle East. Africa etc etc.

The country is tiny, they have never even qualified for a WC and they are going to waste unbelivable amounts of money building stadia, transportation, etc when they could be using that money for other things world wide.. FIFA is a joke and I'm amazed that Australia or the USA didnt win the bid.. Let me know how FIFA likes half empty stadiums, minimum sponsorship from European and North American companies and people bursting into flames walking across the street because it's 50 degrees C.... There is a reason there has never been a WC in the middle east.. Unreal. On a positive note while I think England deserved the WC Russia will do a great job.. Congrats to Russia.

clueless!! do you know how many people fly into and out of nearby dubai? the location is prime to target markets in Europe, Asia, Middle East, Africa etc which are perhaps the largest markets for soccer hands down. You cannot be that foolish.
