[Updated at 10:42 a.m.] FIFA's World Cup will be held in Qatar in 2022, the governing body said in a press conference Thursday.
The tiny, wealthy Middle Eastern nation beat out the United States, Japan, South Korea and Australia to host what will be the largest sporting
event in the world in 2022. Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al-Thani, the son of Qatar's emir and head of the emirate's bid team, said he was looking forward to the first time a Middle Eastern nation hosts the event.
"Thank you for believing in change, for expanding the game and for giving Qatar a chance. You will be proud of us – and you will be proud of the Middle East. I promise you this," he said.
FIFA president Sepp Blatter confirmed that the ruling body's desire to grow the sport around the world played a big part in the committee's thinking.
"I have to say thanks to to the executive committee because for 2018 and 2022 we go to new lands, because the FIFA World Cup has never been in eastern Europe or the Middle East. So, I'm a happy president when we speak of the development of football," he said.
[Posted at 10:37 a.m.] The 2018 FIFA World Cup will be held in Russia, the sport's governing body announced Thursday.
The Russian government has pledged billions of dollars to build new stadiums and infrastructure. A tournament in Russia would also open a huge, relatively untapped market for FIFA, which has awarded World Cups to South Africa in 2010 and Japan and South Korea in 2002 for similar reasons.
Russia beat out England and joint bids from Spain/Portugal and Belgium/Netherlands to host what will be the largest sporting event in the
world in 2018. It will be the first time the contest has been held in eastern Europe.
Russian prime minister Vladimir Putin decided against attending the ceremony in Zurich, but his deputy Igor Shuvalov was present to accept the
first successful bid from Eastern Europe.
"You have entrusted us with the FIFA World Cup for 2018 and I can promise that you will never regret it. Let us make history together," he told the
assembled delegates.
My sticking point is if they wish to rotate things throughout the globe, Russia just hosted an Olympics and travel was a pain in the a$$ for that.
Qatar's population is just about double as the number of people who will attend (based on 2010 World Cup numbers). They really have one hotel room per number of houses there?
It would be wise to Go and research before you speak.
You people disgust me!!! Qatar is NOT a terrorist country!!!!! Once in a while, go outside the little villages you live in and see the world for what it is. As for myself, I was born in India. I moved to QATAR when I was 4 with my family. I have never lived in such opulence before in my life, as I did in Qatar!!!!!!!!!! It is literally a land of milk and honey. Not only that, it is an extremely peaceful and very much democratic country!!! Most of our U.S. army bases are based in Qatar. Then, I moved to U.S. when I was 9. I love being an American and I consider it an honor to have been raised here for most of my life. I also studied for about 5 yeas in Eastern Europe (Poland). That being said, it is SAD when a bunch of ignorant people who have no IDEA of what the world is, start giving a bad reputation to great countries like Qatar!!!!! I understand that having the great fortune and honor of living in 4 countries in my very young age, may not be granted to all. But at least, pick up a book and read! Heck, look up things on wikipedia for pete's sake! Not every country in the Middle East is a terrorist country/group. And no, Qatar is not part of U.A.E. I am ecstatic that Qatar will be recognized in the global scheme of things! Can't wait for 2018 & 2022, God willing!! 🙂
"Toot-toot!" That's the sound of the train leaving the US behind. Welcome to the future.

Qatar for 2022, so what all the women that will go there for the games will have to wear burka?
You should in america
Women don't have to cover in Qatar. It's not Saudi.
"There is an underlying threat from terrorism in Qatar. Attacks, although unlikely, could be indiscriminate, including places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers. Terrorists continue to issue statements threatening to carry out attacks in the Gulf region. These include references to attacks on Western interests, including residential compounds, places of worship, military, oil, transport and aviation interests.
You should maintain a high level of security awareness, particularly in public places. You should avoid large gatherings and demonstrations."

I am so happy that none of the so-called First World countries won! what's wrong with Russia and Qatar? just because they are different doesn't mean they won't put a GREAT MEMORABLE world cup.. Shame on the Haters.. what happened to accepting the other?
That's only in paper Optimist... in reality most of Americans hate anything and anybody who is not White, Anglo-Saxon, Protestant or Christian and chews tobacco and spits it, scratching their private parts, while playing our national sport of baseball. I am an American but recognize that we need more education about the World in general. We must accept that we are part of this world, not the owners of it. That's why democrats loose seats in Congress, because the conservative, narrow minded people that are majority here. Sorry for that World, but trust me... there are few of us here who are happy for Russia and even for Qatar now.
Why can't you be good sport and lose in dignity. We were not the only one to lose our bid (out of 5 finalist countries 1 gets picked). All these comments about bribes, terrorism, and other silliness are very sad. I bet most of the people making these comments have no clue about the long selection process and what each competing country offered. For example, the billions Russia is spending to host or the zero-carbon emission stadiums Qatar is building. Be happy for the winners and let's look forward to beautiful matches in the upcoming world's cups.
Congrats Julia in such a nice, positive and honest comment. I agree with you 100 %, and in fact you put it in better words that I would have. Thanks!
You telling me couldn't afford a bribe?
Puuleeeze!
Wow.....good for Russia. But Qatar, do we not realize that Qatar is about 120 degrees during this time. This nation has promissed new Airconditioning units in the stadium, yes this coming form a nation that has promissed big things like that in Dubai...how is that working out? Still can't fill that building up or that island yet. US just needs to push forward in supporting the US soccer team and make it to where we go and kick all there butts in 2018 and 2022. Go Team USA!!!!!
Qatar is a surprise. They'll have to build the majority of the stadiums, and will need to waste huge resources to air condition them.
The US has all the stadiums already in place (they just use football stadium since it's the off-season), an existing infrastructure (airports, transportation, etc), and the stadiums have a much larger capacity than what Qatar plans to build. Many of the US stadiums hold 80-100k fans. The last time the US hosted the World Cup, it was the highest-grossing Cup in history.
Good luck to Qatar, but I really don't see logically how their bid was stronger than that of the US or Australia.
They're already building them. Qatar is an extremely rich nation, mainly due to their massive natural gas resources. That tiny contry is the world's biggest producer of natural gas. Lots o' money to be had around there.
Quickly, destroy Qatar before 2022 and the World Cup is ours. Whoooohaahaahaa!
We (the USA) couldn't afford it anyway!
Oh you didn't know we have a money on the front lawn of the white house? If you look closing at night you will elves picking hundred dollars bills....thats how we pay for everything..
LOL. The rotational policy is just doomed. The world cup should change with the times. After 2010 WC, S.A added a flavor of party atmosphere and social occassion. The world cup should have embraced the qualities from 2010 by picking countries that a dynamic.
This is no surprise. It was a fix from the word GO. You just knew it, because the American FIFA official Chuck Blazer posted pictures of Vladimir Putin on his personal blog http://chuckblazer.blogspot.com/ days before the announcement. Blazer is a celebrity hound, and Putin knew this and flattered him. At Putin's request, Blazer even changed the name of his blog.
