American Airlines cancels service to and from Haiti during protests

American Airlines has canceled service to and from Haiti for a second day because of political unrest there.

The airline announced Wednesday that it was canceling all six of its flights from the United States to Port-au-Prince because of post-election violence. It extended the moratorium Thursday.

"We will evaluate future operations, including tomorrow, later in the day (Thursday)," AA spokesman Tim Smith said in an e-mail.

Protests erupted throughout the Haitian capital Wednesday, the day after presidential election results were announced. Mobs alleging fraud burned the headquarters of the government-backed candidate and blocked roads using earthquake rubble and flaming tires.

Mirlande Manigat, a former first lady of Haiti, won the election held more than a week ago with 31.37% of the vote, the Provisional Electoral Council announced late Tuesday.

Jude Celestin, the candidate backed by President Rene Preval, came in second with 22.48%, while popular musician Michel Martelly was just behind Celestin with 21.84%.

    They act like animals we should go there and set traps and cages w small amounts of food in them catch em and slowly try to train the animals back to some kinda humanity

    Or we could just cut off all transportation to and from there drop the nuke go back in a yr and make beautiful vacation island and call it likey instead of haiti ANIMALS

    I work at a hotel and we recently had some haitians check in when their toilets over flowed they called the front desk complaining that the drinking fountain was broken and wouldnt stop running Lmao

    American Airlines should be changing their name. As an American stranded in Haiti with 20 other Americans with reservations on AA flights, we would love for them to honor their name and get us home. Delta is flying. Air France is flying. AA is not. AA also won't transfer our reservations to other airlines. They cancel our reservations, push us to another flight, cancel those reservations, push us to another flight, and we're still here. They still are not flying today (Monday) and we can only pray that they start caring about us enough to resume flights tomorrow.
