Home burglarized while vet, fiancee welcome baby

An Iraq war veteran and his fiancee are receiving an outpouring of support after their home was burglarized while the woman was giving birth, CNN affiliate WBNS reports.

While Tonya Verduga was giving birth at a Columbus, Ohio, hospital with military veteran Tom Sheehan at her side, thieves were ransacking their house and making off with TVs, a laptop, jewelry and Christmas presents for the baby and for Verduga's two sons from a previous marriage, the station reported.

"From the ultimate high to just wanting to scream," said Sheehan, who returned from his most recent tour in Iraq in August. "(I'm) just so angry and upset."

But their community is making things right. Members of the Liberty Township Fire Department are adopting the family, and two VFW posts are collecting gifts and donations, WBNS reported.

Philanthropist Mae McCorkle wrote the couple a check for $5,000.

"It's an overwhelming feeling, knowing that you can get care like that from a complete stranger. ... It makes your heart melt knowing that there's people who would do that for you," Sheehan told the station.

Thomas Jaden: The bible says LOTS of things that you probably disregard, so unless you are a whacked fundamentalist, (or just a troll) stop picking and choosing what to abide by based on personal biases. And, by the way – this soldier is one of millions who has served our country so that people like YOU have the right to say anything stupid they like in public forums.

I was thinking that too! If they did, then they need to look a little closer to home.

Well, he certainly wasn't going to have it. Question is: when the lowlife(s) whole stole the goods eventually brag about it, who's going to have the balls to turn them in or at least tell them how f-ed up they are? I bet nobody. That's the code of lowlifes and their company. None of them have any balls at all.

I was thinking exactly that and I figured other people would say the same thing so I searched for the word Facebook on here and there ya go. I can almost bet my life on it. I hope the police catch them and if they were on their friends list they learn from it.

Almost the same thing happened to my nephew and his wife in Missouri. They are expecting a baby in February 2011. They went to the doctors office for an appointment and ran a few errands since they both took off work for the day. When they returned that evening they found they had been robbed. The burglars took the TV's, lap top, cash, jewelery and the four year old son's WII game system. Just the cost of trying to replace a small portion of these of these items for the four year old is hard enough these days. But its also Christmas and they have a new baby coming soon. They also have to deal with the safety issue now. What people don't realize is the feeling of being violated after a robbery. Now they have to bring their new family home and want to feel safe in their own home. I hope Mr. Sheehan and his family the very best this christmas season. It warms my heart to see that there are still WONDERFUL people out there to give support to those in need. Best of luck and many prayers to you and your new baby.

That is so sad, it makes me want to cry for them. Who could do such a thing.; steal presents for children, from anyone? Glad to know there are still some nice people in the world to help out this family!

Just one question though... Now that he is back, where is the family support from the military?

Since Mr. Sheehan sports a beard, and given the language of the article, perhaps he is no longer active military and may not be able to access the entire range of family support services available at a military facility.

Also from the two Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) posts that are collecting for them.

The family is receiving a lot of support from Sheehan's battle buddies at his unit. A firefighter who served with Sheehan in Iraq got the support of his firehouse to adopt the family for Christmas, donating their own money to the family. Other people in Sheehan's unit have offered gifts or donated to the family via the VFW posts that are collecting for the family. Their military family is supporting them whole heatedly.

I can't believe the trolls that this article brought out. Most of these negative comments are so absurd as to seem completely made up.
