Auburn's Newton wins Heisman Trophy

Auburn quarterback Cam Newton won the 2010 Heisman Trophy on Saturday night, his on-field heroics enough to overcome off-the-field questions about his role in a purported pay-for-play scheme.

Newton bested a field that included Oregon running back LaMichael James, Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck, and Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore. The award, given in New York City, is voted on by hundreds of media members and past winners.

The junior from College Park, Georgia, leads Auburn, the nation's top-ranked team. The Tigers will play likewise undefeated Oregon on Jan. 10 in the Bowl Championship Series title game for what amounts to a national championship.

Newton has thrown for 28 touchdowns and run for another 20 scores this season, helping the Tigers win the Southeastern Conference Championship. His performance came despite his being dogged all fall by allegations that his services were being shopped around before he landed at Auburn.

Looks like the NCAA has awarded another fraud while making billions in profits. Hope Auburn is stripped of everything before signing day.

I guess you don't need integrity to win The Heisman anymore. It is a shame.

RUFFNUT, you are an idiot... Yes OJ is likely a murderous dirtbag but that was 26 YEARS after he won the Heisman. Not only that, but in doling out the annual award, the Heisman Trust only requires integrity in matters that violate NCAA rules or provide an unfair advantage to a player. They do not concern themselves with other illegal indiscretions.

Yeah, there's no NCAA rule that's says you can't be a lying wife beater and there's no rule against cutting off an opponent's head. Give the Juice a break, Trojans are special.

Cam was the best player on the field this year. Every div I team has player(s) that have received some kind of perks. a couple of those throwback heisman winners aren't squeaky clean either. Didn't Hornung shave points in the pros? Either way Cam proved it on the field.

First line of the Heisman Trust's mission statement: "The Heisman Memorial Trophy annually recognizes the outstanding college football player whose performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with INTEGRITY." I'm struggling with the integrity bit here. Even if he didn't know anything about his father's activities (which seems....), his comments about supporting his father, etc. post scandal would make me struggle to support his integrity. A person with integrity would come down hard saying "what he did was unacceptable," etc. – Not, "I support my father." I'd be embarrased to be a Heisman voter and they might as well change their mission statement.

let him enjoy the trophy for a while then they will take it back(ala regee bush). the whole ncaa system is long overdue for a change. the sad part is that most of the collegiate problems have trickled down to the high school leval or lower. i agree with a previous poster this has been going on for years, changes need to be made.

Heck, I wish he was still at Florida. We would have 4 Heisman winners and going for the 4th BCS crown in 12 years. But seriously, he will lose it within 5 years maybe less. You have to be the most naive or ignorant person on the planet to believe he didn't know what his father was doing.

No way the NCAA takes the heisman back. That would mean they'd have to admit they were wrong. It won't matter to Cam if they do take it back he'll have millions by then. Heisman lost its luster years ago due to guys winning it and not doing anything after. Doesn't mean anything but another comma on a paycheck!!

As a huge Ducks fan I can easily say Cam Newton deserves this trophy. I can care less about if boosters get people to come to there schools. It happens at every school one way or another and the school can't control it. If I offer to pay for a fancy suit for my favorite college ball player to wear to his Heisman trophy party then I am a booster. Stupid. He was the best hands down and led his team as a leader should.

The Heisman award no longer has the integrity it once had. Newton is dirty. Oregon knows who the real winner is. Integrity, humility, leadership, give Mr. James the nod. He is the real deal, folks. This kid is awesome – raw natural talent. The Heisman has become a joke.
