Memorials for slain soccer fan turn violent in Russia

Rioting broke out in Russia's two largest cities Saturday as soccer fans protested the death of a man in ethnically charged clashes earlier in the week.

Yegor Sviridov, 28, was killed during a huge brawl in northern Moscow between football fans and migrants from the North Caucasus region. A suspect is in custody, RIA Novosti reported.

Thousands of fans - commonly called "football hooligans" in the Russian media - turned out for a memorial Saturday at Moscow's Red Square. Violence and fires soon erupted again, and hundreds of riot police used shields, truncheons and gas to try to disperse the crowd. Video on the Russia 24 network showed helmeted police clubbing protesters and dragging them away.

Similar clashes broke out in St. Petersburg, RIA Novosti reported. Nationalists and members of the outlawed National Bolshevik Party were reportedly involved, but media said most of those present are "ordinary fans," according to the news agency.

A police spokesperson denied that any serious incidents had occurred in St. Petersburg.

Ignore the America bashing, and the fake Americans bashing others. They are Chinese propagandists. Go away China, get out of our Internet forums. We aren't hateful people and you aren't helping yourselves by posting here. The nations you try to divide, will only resent you for it!

    • who cares

Who cares about Russia and soccer or "football"? They had an interesting run in the last EURO's, but fail to be important in that sport in anyway possible. Their three best players play in England for a reason... (Arshavin, Pavlyuchenko, and Zhirkov) < sorry if i spelled their sophisticated names wrong. These people are not hooligans because they don't have credibility to be into soccer that much.. I mean this news is not interesting one bit because no one trusts Russia anyway and they have been the misfit of the world for a very long time now. China has a booming economy atleast and Cuba no one gives a flying 'F' about so Putin should take a hike because he's embarrassing the human race every day he's in office, if it is even a real job for that matter...

Nope "Mark", or your American sounding name. No one's crying about Russia getting the world cup. Rather it is a jealous china, that is making its living lie a presence on the Internet and trying to speak for us. China sucks! The West rules! You lost the cold war, get over it already! Russia is going Western. Eff China!

I from Russia. Our police is corrupted. Caucasians pay in it money and pay off for murders against Russian. Russia forward! We won't allow to kill Russian on the earth. We won't allow to dictate to visitors as to us to live.

Karabin, where those visitors who committed the murder from a different country, not Russia? And if not, how are they visitors in their own country? Can you explain that?
Also, do you hold responsible everyone for the actions of a few individuals? If so, I could by that logic stereotype and call you personally a drunk stupid loser. Would that be fair? Think, don't be a sheep.

Our government to be milked to reject pressure as it does your government. In your country there is a Freedom of speech, and in ours even on the TV don't show murder of Russian

Your police aren't the only ones who are corrupt. How about the members of the Duma? The MOE? Judges?

Our driver was pulled by the police in Moscow on our way to the airport. He handed him a few Rubels and off we went. I'd be arrested if I tried to pay off a cop for speeding in our city in the US.

I left Russia years ago, and have very limited communication with those I know there. I visit Brooklyn once a year to refresh my language and get a taste and feel of Russia, and what I see is not very impressive. It is hard to describe it for most Americans since they are living in completely different environment. Let's see... Your windshield wiper or your headlight may break on your way to work, so you head to K-Mart in the evening to buy a new one, and police stops you. In Russia, there is no "I am on my way to replace it", it's "Pay now, or find yourself behind bars". I once thought that government was corrupt, or whoever was in charge was corrupt, but it is really not the case. Ordinary people want to be in control (anything new?) or get more more money no matter what (anything different?). There are a lot of amazingly intelligent people there, a lot of knowledge... but very little respect for each other. As for Caucasians, the problem existed 20 years ago (when I witnessed it) and long before that ( when my grandfather talked about it), and it is not American "illegal immigrant" problem. Russians feel that they are being taken over by them. I don't take sides here, I thank God I don't have to.

Actually Yegor Sviridov was killed by gun during robbery made by four or five сaucasians. One of these Caucasians was arrested. He had already been convicted once for stealing. But other participants were released from detention that has provoked resentment among Yegor's friends and their sympathizers. They consider that other suspects were released illegally by giving a bribe to police. Therefore, these protests are directed not only against Caucasians as against corruption in the Russian police.

But it is worth noting that there were many people who have only ethnic motives.

It is not difficult to understand feelings of ordinary people from streets of Moscow. Caucasians are bullying, it is fact.Because they hate Russians...Why?.Because their country was occupied by Russians .More than hundred years ago, long lasted and very bloody Russian invasion(especially in northwest Caucasus it turned to genocide)destroyed social progress of this proud mountaineers.Tsarist Russia was colonialist and bloody empire.Today's Russia is sitting on this heritage...So what do you expect.?
If today's Russia is not colonialist empire, Russians should learn to share Moscow with other nations. If You expel them from Moscow, they will look for freedom. Very simple logic.

And it's not the matter of being white or black or latino. Many Caucasians are white, fair- haired, blue-eyed, and still we don't want them here !

Since you have said race has nothing to do with it, why can't you teach them to be good? If they go back to where they came from they will get to kill more people there and then get more powerful and will be a problem many years from now when they try another invasion.

If you are suggesting to get rid of all non-Russians including all Siberians in Moscow, then you have to lobby Russian Government with the request to separate all Siberian republics, actually, all Siberia, i.e. Tatarstan, Bashkortostan, Altai, Tuva, Yakutia, Chukotka, Kalmykia, Kamchatka which are ethnically non-Russian republics and their native population are Asiatic, from Russia so that none of these people enter Moscow. Can you imagine if they separate, nothing will be left in Moscow as all natural and mineral resources that feed Federal Centre will simply dissappear, but moreover, these republics will only flourish as none of their wealth will land in Moscow corrupt banks? I bet you'll regret saying that Russia is only for Russians and Moscow for Moscowites
