Metrodome roof collapses; NFL game moved

[12:18 p.m. ET] The New York Giants-Minnesota Vikings game will take place Monday at 7:20 p.m. at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan, the NFL said in a statement Sunday. The game was moved after the roof of the Vikings' Metrodome in Minneapolis collapsed due to heavy snow.

[11 a.m. ET] The game between the Minnesota Vikings and the New York Giants will not be played at the Metrodome on Monday or Tuesday because of the roof collapse caused by heavy snow, the NFL announced Sunday.

The league is exploring the possibility of playing Monday night at the University of Minnesota's TCF Bank Stadium or another domed NFL stadium, according to a statement from Greg Aiello of the NFL.

[Original post] Heavy snow has caused the roof of the Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to collapse, a spokesman for the Minnesota State Patrol said Sunday.

A blizzard that hit the Midwest prompted officials Saturday night - before the roof collapsed - to postpone Sunday's scheduled NFL game between the Minnesota Vikings and New York Giants. A statement from the Vikings cited "unsafe conditions related to the Metrodome roof and the weather."

The game was rescheduled from Sunday afternoon to Monday night, the team said.

The Giants were stranded at Kansas City International Airport on
Saturday, unable to get to Minnesota because of the snow, said team spokesman Peter John-Baptiste.

You do realize that climate change manifests itself in causing more extreme weather on both sides of the spectrum correct? But you shouldn't count every snow storm and every thunderstorm as a result of climate change because the changes are so gradual that there would be no discernible change in precipitation if you compared every storm.

Global warming is what is creating extreme weather, the pattern is to get more and more extreme weather in a curv which swings exponentially upward in the long term. Put it to rest, if you talk to any even decent scientist it will tell you that global warming is NOT in discussion......if you talk to a right wing political hack...well that's a completely different story since their horizon is 4 years and not 50.......strategic thinking vs tactical thinking.......

I ask you liberals to stop for a second, and think carefully about this issue. When are you liberals finally going to concede that this global warming stuff may be total nonsense?? I will give you some examples. First, it used to be that global warming meant that the weather was getting hotter, but now you liberals try and explain the severe winter storm by saying that global warming encompasses extremes of temperatures on both sides. That is some fancy dancing, if you ask me. But here is another example. I live in Florida. About 5 years ago, we had 3-4 hurricanes within a couple months time. I think it was at the time of Katrina. Anyway, you liberals explained at the time tthat this was because of global warming, and I distinctly remember you saying that global warming would result in an increased frequency of hurricanes, and more powerful hurricanes to boot. Well, we haven't had a single hurricane since that time. Another hurricane season has passed, with no hurricane. Well guess what? Do you know what I just heard on the radio--a liberal explaining that the LACK of hurricanes is due to global warming. I do not have a scientific background, although I do have 4 college degrees, so I am obviously not qualified to know whether global warming is valid or not (by the way, 99% of the proponents of global warming are not qualifed to make this assessment either, even though they routinely do so), but ask yourself this: If global warming was so obviously true, then why did those scientists in England fabricate data, and cover up conflicting data, and propose that a name-calling campaign be conducted against those scientists who have concluded that global warming is not a valid concept?. Global warming has become like a religion. And also, who generally attends those global warming conferences. If you look closely, many are socialist/communist anti-capitalist groups, who have a political agenda. Finally, even if global warming IS true, there is not a lot we can do about it, as long as India and China do not change their ways. Any improvements that the US makes would be dwarfed by their conflicting policies. Further, even if global warming is true, then it follows that as the earth heats, some regions will suffer, but some regions will improve. For example, the vast frozen lands of northern Canada may become inhabitable, and suitable for agriculture.

Wow you people on the the right have a very short memory. It was Frank Luntz who came up with the term "Climate Change." He was George W. Bush's spin doctor, he also coined the phrases "Death Tax" instead of estate or inheritance tax, "Elcectonic Inercept" insteat of wire tapping or evesdropping, and "Oppurtunuity Scholarships" instead of school vouchers (that one never caught on). He also redefined "Orwellian" to be a positive thing. So all you people saying that the term climate change came out because liberals were somehow proven wrong about global warming... you're wrong, look it up. The phrase was intentionally coined by the right-wing to create doubt about the source of the Earth's warming trends.

    • Chico

No, no, no, no, no. You do NOT get to now rename your theory "climate change" from "global warming. You told us all that there was a direct, simplistic, cause-and-effect relationship between increased CO2 and the earth's temperature - as if an organism as complex as the earth could ever or has ever had a "temperature." You believed (and belief it was) that there would be no more snow and no more cold and that we'd be wearing Bermuda shorts in Minnesota by 2010. It was, as I said, a theory. You don't change the facts to fit your theory. As a scientist, I can tell you that's forbidden. Likewise, true scientists don't attack you as on part with a Holocaust denier if you review their data and probe it. To the contrary, the peer review process and being able to repeat your results is a KEY part to true scientific discovery.

Attacking and threatening and calling for for the burning at the stake of non-believers are not the hallmarks of science. They are the hallmarks of fanatical religious cults.

Oh, and before you do likewise to me, remember your much-ballyhooed hockey stick graph. Ten years ago you same people were insisting it was the gospel: Hotter, hotter, hotter and an end to white Christmases, etc. Now, your high priests have quietly admitted it was hockum - and you want to switch the name to "climate change."

No, "climate change" is just weather and the change of the seasons.

You think you'd all be happy. But no!

Wow Chico you seem like the religious fanatic. The only reason I mentioned Bush was because it was his administration that hired Frank Luntz to do their marketing for them, you can deny it if you want, but that doesn't change the facts. Aren't religious fanatics the ones who say that their leader is right reguardless of the facts? You're the one who infered the eeeeeeevil Bush cabal, please provide links to the New York Times articles encouraging liberals to use "climate change."
While you look for links to articles that don't exist, here's a few that attribute the term climate change to Frank Luntz:

This is a PDF from the Luntz Research Group

On page 142, after talking about phrases that work and phrases that don't work point #1 states, "1. “Climate change’’ is less frightening than “global warming; As one focus group participant noted, climate change “sounds like you’re going from Pittsburgh to Fort Lauderdale.” While global warming has catastrophic connotations attached to it, climate change suggests a more controllable and less emotional challenge."

      from The Gaurdian:
The memo, by the leading Republican consultant Frank Luntz, concedes the party has "lost the environmental communications battle" and urges its politicians to encourage the public in the view that there is no scientific consensus on the dangers of greenhouse gases.

"The scientific debate is closing [against us] but not yet closed. There is still a window of opportunity to challenge the science," Mr Luntz writes in the memo..."

      The Independent:

"Ever wondered which adviser coined the phrase "exploring for energy" to describe oil-drilling? That was Luntz. Or who advised right-wingers seeking to abolish inheritance tax to call it "death tax"? Luntz again. And when President Bush started using the (soft) phrase "climate change" instead of the (apocalyptic) "global warming", Washington insiders detected the sharp hand of Dr Frank I Luntz."

      From Science

I could go on, but what's the point? If it's a hallmark of religious fanaticism and religious fanatics that they believe whatever they have been told to believe despite demonstrable proof to the contrary, then you sir, and everyone else who believes that climate change is a phrase liberals came up with to distance themselves from statements they made in the past, are the religious fanatics; not I. I would really be interested in any non FOX related source that attributes the term climate change to ANYONE else.

Wouldn't you think that in designing the dome that you would take into account whether the building could withstand a "one in hundred year heavy snow fall"?. This snow event wasn't anything out of the ordinary. 12-14 inches of heavy snow. That is nothing unusual for the upper midwest. If you can't design it to withstand than don't build it.

I wouldn't go as far to say it "wasn't anything out of the ordinary." I've never seen, in my time in Minnesota, a snowfall (even the 1991 Halloween blizzard) that was that nonstop. And the winds were ridiculous. No, a 12" snowfall isn't too crazy for MN, but this was the 8th largest snow on record for the Twin Cities... so it wasn't just another blizzard. The fact that it went for 15 hours without stopping was pretty unique as well.
