Blitzer's dispatch: Lighter moments during tense times in North Korea

Even in the midst of incredible tension on the Korean peninsula, there have been a few lighter moments as I continue covering New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson’s extraordinary visit here.

He’s trying to calm down the tensions and has been meeting with senior North Korean diplomats, generals and nuclear officials, including Kim Gye Gwan, the North Korean who invited Richardson here on this mission.

At the start of their meeting, Governor Richardson introduced me to Kim Gye Gwan, and, through a translator, Kim joked that he was very familiar with my work, and that he understood that I was “as powerful as President Obama.” I started to laugh, as did everyone else in the room. He then said, “I understand only you and Obama have your own Situation Rooms” to which all of us laughed again.

I was impressed that he was following CNN and I mentioned that I’d been watching CNN International at this hotel where we’re staying in Pyongyang. I thanked the nuclear negotiator for allowing CNN to come into Korea for Governor Richardson’s visit, and hoped they would let us come back.

This time, he responded in English, saying, “Why not?”

Despite the joking and some of the sight-seeing tours they’ve taken us on, I have to say it’s a very worrisome time in the North Korean peninsula. A lot of people here seem to be somewhat encouraged that the UN Security Council is scheduled to meet for an emergency session Sunday morning East Coast time. Maybe that will calm things down. Bill Richardson tells me that it might give North Korea and South Korea some sort of cover to ratchet down the very bellicose rhetoric.

Watch The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer weekdays at 4pm to 6pm ET and Saturdays at 6pm ET. For the latest from The Situation Room click here.

Is Wolf in Korea to bad mouth our Presidient? My opinion, and BTW shared by many, Wolf doesn't like Obama becuase Wolf supports Israel and thinks Obama doesn't like Israel. so he badmouths Obama every chance he gets.

If war is inevitable, it is the right time to attack North Korea under the cover of fog. On Dec 4, Venus has shown the sign for war. It is now or never.

If Blitzer weren't so pathetic, this would be funny. Pyongyang remind shim of Buffalo. Yeah, just without the people, the economy, and the freedom. Other than that, it's JUST LIKE Buffalo. And they're all out there cleaning the streets BY HAND. Yes, Wolf, there's a reason for that, too. But, we don't want to say anything that might mildly offend our hosts, such as the truth of what North Korea is really like. For the person who is glad to see Obama's "steady" hand on the tiller: the issue is not our leadership, it's the nut cases in charge in NK. Dealing with their threats to world peace is an issue that affects us all.

First, I find it very brave of Wolf Blitzer to go. Couldn't this delegation have been used as a human shield? Disturbing to think about.

Second on Wolf's jeans. He probably did not want to come off as being perceived as an official part of the delegation.

Really, Really People are commenting on jeans and jackets. Lets all take our heads out of our a** and come to the fact that N.K and their adversaries are taking about WAR! This war is to be taken very serious because all other counties are looking on to see what the next move is. It's crazy to me that people care how Mr. Blitzer wears. He out of all other reporters was allowed in to this monumental event. I think he reports it the best "Governor Richardson introduced me to Kim Gye Gwan, and, through a translator, Kim joked that he was very familiar with my work, and that he understood that I was “as powerful as President Obama.” I started to laugh, as did everyone else in the room. He then said, “I understand only you and Obama have your own Situation Rooms” to which all of us laughed again." -CNN This shows all people that care what he is wearing how big Wolf is.

Wolf is doing a fine job their and yes whole game show issues was SO bad for him.

Bill Richardson is the biggest "wannabe" in the country – when he's not throwing his hat in the ring for the presidency, he's gallavanting all over the world as a quasi-diplomat without portfolio. It would be nice if he stayed in Santa Fe once in a while and took care of matters of the state, oh thata's right, he's outta there soon and then perhaps the citizens of N.M. will get their money's worth with the new governor. What a blowhard!

This is for all you geniuses who are advocating annexing N. Korea. In addition to the lives this would cost–Kim and his cronies ein't going down with a nuke fight–think about what we and S. Korea would be left with... It would make the reunificaiton of East and West Germany look llke a party. Fixing Iraq and Afghanistan not challenging enough for you mental giants???
