'God is' billboard replaces controversial Lincoln Tunnel atheist sign

An atheist billboard on the New Jersey side of the Lincoln Tunnel that declared Christmas a "myth" has been replaced by a pro-Christian billboard.

The old billboard, put up in late November by the American Atheists organization, said "You know it's a myth. This season, celebrate reason."

The sign stirred controversy among Christian organizations, prompting the Catholic League to erect its own pro-Christmas billboard on the New York side of the tunnel that read, "You Know It's Real: This Season Celebrate Jesus."

The new sign, which was posted by the Manhattan-based Times Square Church, reads "God is," and includes a word cloud of religious themes.

The book of Genesis was originally written in Hebrew. The Hebrew word translated "day" has a variety of meanings, including 'a long time; the time covering an extraordinary event.' (Old Testament World Studies, Grand Rapids , Mich.; 1978, W. Wilson, p. 109) . The term used allows for the thought that each "day" could have been thousands of years in length. (cont)

@Phil: Sorry, atheists are bred out of ignorance, so your posts will not have any impact on those people.

" In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth" states the bible. And today's religions teach this all happened in 7 literal days. However, it takes light from the Andromeda nebula some 2,000,000 years to reach earth. This light can be seen on a clear night in the northern hemisphere. so we know for a certainty that the universe and the earth are at least that old. Some rock formations are dated at billions of years. This does not conflict with God's word, the bible. It conflicts with the worlds religions who lie to you about all sorts of things, and are famous for molesting your children as they spew these lies. Why anyone in their right mind would listen to them is beyond me. That includes athiests who derive their perceptions about God, not from the bible, but from these religious leaders' interpretation of it.

The Bible was written by Humans. I know I am on the invalid side as I am not Christian but I also find it impossible to validate human works of art as truth. Why aren't any of you able to translate a truth from today? Why does it all have to come from History? I see who is supposed to and then still so human (not more capable then Buddha or Muslims). To be a lot biased women are creators. Early man might be a little Jealous. With science maybe females are more likely to evolve without men. Cheers to a day when no sperm is needed.

H Cesar! Could be, but can you blame them for not believing what religion's teach? After all, it is laughable this idea that everything was created in seven days.

Oops!!! check that. Since the creation of Adam and Eve, we have been living in the biblical "7th" day. Further proof that these "days" recorded in Genisis are a lot longer than 24hrs.

How can anyone who looks around himself/herself at this Miracle we call a Universe, need any more "proof" of
the evidence of "The Old One," as Einstein used to call him, or the "Prime Mover" as the anscient Greeks used to call him?
Whicjh brings up the common perception that the Practice of Science and Belief in God are at odds with each other. Wrong! They actually they "complement" each other. Science tells us "How' about Nature. (What is "Nature" after all
but a "Belief."?) While belief in God tell us "Why" Mother Nature is so marvelous. Take the DNA Double Helix for example. We know How? We don't know Why?
    Meerry Christmas.

Cesar, no I believe that when people die, they are dead. Death is the opposite of life. Jesus referred to dead people as "those sleeping in death". The idea that when you die you go to heaven or hell is a lie told to you by the same religious leaders who try to tell you God made everything in a few days. Jesus was dead for three days before his Father brought him back to life. And he was the first person ever brought back to life by God. Millions of good people desrving of life lived and died before the time of Jesus. They are "sleeping in death" waiting for God to wake them up after He cleans up this mess we have made of this earth.

The crux of the Christian Faith comes down to the claims Christ made about himself. If Christ is indeed who He said he is, that He is God incarnate, came down to die for our sins and rose again- if all of that is true(and I believe He is who He says He is) it changes everything because Christ then is no longer to be seen as a mere founder of the Christian religion, but is indeed all of humankind's savior. That's why the gospel of Jesus Christ is referred to as the good news. The Good News despite all the crap that goes on in this world. Merry Christmas.

Christians pummeled the Indians & forced down non-believers' thrrroat with "in god we trust," "so help me god," "under god," etc.

There are more of us. So, believing in "it" has its privileges - subjugating others! 🙂

@Roy Joseph...where in the bible does Jesus call himself "God incarnate"? I've been studying the bible for decades, and have never come accross this verse. Please, tell me what verse this is in.

There are approximately 2800 deities in today's countries...so which "god" is this billboard addressing?

So a few rocket scientists believe there is a "god" so this "god" MUST exist? Is this the same god that football players pray to? so then god takes sides in football games?

Is this the same god who let dozens of young girls burn to death in a dormitory because they were not dressed decently enough to come out in public?

It is possible to be completely moral and not believe in a god. To say that belief results in comfort, joy...well we have seen extreme instances where "god's" believers have killed millions in his name..from jihads to the Crusades to the Inquisition. People who believe in "god" have no right to tell other people how they should live. Believe what you want, but do NOT intrude on anyone else's life!

Live and let live...but don't tell me I am wrong if I don't believe in a "Flying Spaghetti monster." I believe in science..in .a universe that is billions of years old...not 6,000 years old because you happened to read ONE book..the bible.

The brightest, gentlest, most wonderful teachers, role models, and leaders are atheists. They don't trample on anyone's beliefs. They just get on with their lives and refuse to believe fairy tales.

Face it! Most people believe in a god because they are terrified of dying and there not being a heaven to go to! Face it! When you die, that is it! And for those who say that there is a heaven, then why don't you die as quickly as possible so that you can go live with your god?? Maybe you aren't that sure!

I am an atheist. I don't trample on other people's belief systems. I am a kind, compassionate MD and my fellow MDs and nurses who are atheists give you wonderful care and treat you with the utmost care and skill. So all of you who believe in something as preposterous as a god...LEAVE ME AND OTHERS ALONE! We all have just one chance at life..let us live together in peace.

I actually want to reply to Nuschler, because I really appreciate and second everything you have said. I think letting go of a God belief is like letting go of the Santa Clause belief. People seem to experience the same insecurity as a child who still believes and gets angry at first as other children let ya know it was really all make believe. The biggest problem now is Adults who kill in the name of a God as they are better then anyone else. Humans wrote the bible.
