Convicted urine collector in trouble again

An Ohio man whose fetish-driven actions led Ohio to pass a law banning the collection of bodily fluids may be headed back to jail.

Alan David Patton, 59, is awaiting trial for allegedly installing urine-collection devices in a Lewis Center, Ohio, fast-food restaurant, The Columbus Dispatch reported.

He was convicted in 2009 of charges related to collecting other people's urine in his hometown of Dublin, Ohio, according to the newspaper.

The registered sex offender is accused of violating his bond conditions for the more recent case, the Dispatch reported. He faces as long as eight months in jail and $1,500 in fines if convicted, it said.

Several years ago, I lived in a combined flat in the UK (Coventry) with a man who had this sort of fedish. He would keep bottles and bottles of his urine on a mantel of his bedroom and strewn about on the floor of the loo and beside his bed telling me that he was making uric acid (He's an accountant by trade - not a scientist). He also had an OCD-hoarding disorder. His sister told me that he has done it since he was a teenager. He was ignored as a child in the most severest of ways - pure emotional abuse, so it is any wonder he had a plethora of difficulties frowned upon in normal society. I suggest instead of throwning the book at the man, get this man some court-ordered Rx's and counseling. I know these types of cases are tough nuts to crack but these people need help, not jail time with murders and rapists.

The crime here is he collected other folks urine in a fast food restaurant. You can't even give urine at a doctor's office without signing away your rights. He did so illegally. If he wants to collect his own urine until the cows come home, that's fine by me – but what he did was a criminal act, and should be treated as such. I'm hopeful the judge will see through this and get him the help he needs. Mel

    • The Facts

Mental illness cannot and is NEVER cured. Period. It is beyond the scope of human understanding to ever comprehend the human brain. Psychiatry is simply a crude attempt at trying to understand the human mental condition. When you are sick like this guy, there is no fixing it.

So the State of Ohio was so disturbed that they passed a law to make this guy a criminal? Sure it's disgusting but a crime? Give me a break. What the hell difference does it make if he's got a strange kink that shouldn't make it an issue of law.. Pharmaceutical companies have been collecting urine for years to use as base proteins for drug manufacture without consent, how do you account for that? (intentional pun, please do not prosecute)

Seriously? You don't understand why this should be/is illegal?
DNA. Right to Privacy. Against all social norms. Need more?
You must also think it acceptable to harvest used tampons/pads from public restrooms or is that somehow different?

DNA ? Now that is interesting. Haircuts ? "Instead of throwing its hair clippings in the garbage as usual, a local hair salon is collecting them and mailing them to a nonprofit group that will use it to help soak up oil in the Gulf of Mexico." That was from news. The news did not say they were criminals because of doing it.

Yep, DNA. Mine belongs to me. You make a good point on the haircut except I'll assume the patrons of the shop KNOW they are donating. When you enter a public restroom you have the right to privacy. If this guy is sick enough to collect OTHERS urine you would have to ask yourself – why? I would guess the state of Ohio did and generally speaking its not a holistically unreasonable law.
      Just jabbering on a Sunday.

It is legal to go through your trash if it's sitting on the curbside (e.g. law enforcement can go through your trash without a warrant). If you throw something out at a public garbage disposal, I would think it's legally not your property anymore. If you "dispose of" your urine in a rest room, it may be assumed that you are throwing it away in a public place, and it may not be your property anymore – legally, I think it's different from the issue of the expectation of privacy in a restroom.

I agree with you completely but I don't throw anything away that contains my personal info (bank statements, bills etc) without shredding first. The genesis of my original comment......DNA, privacy, social mores.......was the poster that couldn't understand why it might be illegal.

He will most likely become a priest pee drinker once he figures out how to get the condom off the private parts now that the Pope is allowing him to protect himself from Aids. Wonder why the Pope is so interested in using condoms for the prevention of Aids and less for the prevention of unwanted children? He must really love childern.

This guy is a whack-job who needs some serious counseling. If that doesn't help, he needs to be kept away from others. If it means being incarcerated, so be it.

Isolating the mentally ill from society doesn't help them integrate. I agree that medical intervention is more useful than spiritual intervention, though the one thing religion has going for it where medicine often fails is giving someone a meaningful connection to a supportive community. This is why community based mental health care is often the most effective model.

Disgusting absolutely, but exactly why shoud he be separated from the rest of us. There is no indication I saw that he is dangerous or imposes his fetish on others. Treatment absolutely, he has real problems but I don't see that he is a danger to other people. So we lock up someone with a disgusting weird compulsion but due to overcrowded prisons we let rapists out. Somewhere in there is a failure of logic.

@ Laura – I believe in an integrated society as well. That said, some mentally ill persons can not and should not ever be living in society. They are beyond the help of our best and belong somewhere where they are safe and society is safe from them. I don't know that this man fits this catagory but please lets drop the PC cr@p and face reality. Group hugs will not fix everything.

He is a pedophile with a fetish. He is a danger to society and unless he is chemically or medically castrated he will continue to have sick desires. You can counsel these people all you want, but it's not going to change a thing. I agree as I am a Christian, that praying for him is important, but one must also be receptive to prayer and strong in faith for a healing.
He is a mentally ill and needs help ,not counseling, but castration. Then counseling.

Leave it to a Christian to want to maim or harm someone involuntarily. Christians live in more self-created fear than even the Jews during the Holocaust, and they will readily give up their rights to keep others from exercising theirs.

It's pee. Who cares, let him have all the damn pee he wants– it's going down the drain anyway.

Also, the prayer is bull. Religion is built to keep people from reason. If you have logic and reason, you're free from mental enslavement from the religious establishments. To say I need faith, is to say that I should release my GOOD SENSE, and the more pious you act about HAVING faith, makes you THINK I'll be convinced of your superiority. YOU'RE DEAD WRONG! I'm supposed to believe that there's some finger in the sky, of which there is no proof, judging me and claiming that I was born in a sinful condition? BULL! I was born innocent! What I do is of my own free will! You're following a man you claim to be the walking dead! A guy dies, comes back after three days, and no one threw stones at him and freaked out? BULL! Even if were their Messiah, they would have freaked because you're not even supposed to "suffer a witch to live", but you can worship a ZOMBIE!? Religion is the rope around your neck, dragging you down a road that isn't of your own choosing. Fool. When a religion tells you knowledge is evil, you lose. Knowledge is power, ask any kid from the '70s that saw Saturday morning cartoons! Schoolhouse Rock, ring a bell? But it's ok. You sit in your church PRETENDING to be a good person, while we of strength take care of the world. You wish upon a star, we'll map them. You talk to your imaginary friend, we'll cure cancer. You worship your zombie, we'll make TV shows about them.

Also, the man is NOT a pedophile, he has a fetish. A fetish is not a crime unless it does harm to others or breaks the law in some way. These people weren't in a clinical situation, they urinated of their own free will into a COMMUNAL TOILET. Are we supposed to arrest the septic people that clear those tanks? I think not. It's not like the guy was standing there WATCHING them do their business. This is how RUMORS get started, but your christian faith doesn't mind believing something that's been passed through oral tradition then do you? Don't concern yourself will facts, you might hurt your feeble little mind! The guy has an obsession, or fetish. No, I don't AGREE with what he does, but then again, it's not hurting me, and my morals are not law. NEITHER ARE YOURS! The difference between christians and atheists, atheists UNDERSTAND, but do not judge others, CHRISTIANS JUDGE EVERYTHING regardless of that passage in your book telling you NOT TO! Christians are the most judgmental creatures ever to walk the Earth! No one in that restaurant that peed was proven to be a child, and for you to claim he's a pedophile, is like saying giving you a burger that's cooked rare is attempted murder! He's a freak, you're a freak, let your FREAK FLAG FLY!
