Gorillaz release Christmas gift for fans, techies: iPad-made album, app secrets

If you're a fan of the Gorillaz, don't forget to check online for an additional present this Christmas Day.

The band has always been known for seeking out ways to set themselves apart which leads us to the digital Christmas gift of the album "The Fall," now available to listen to online on the band's site.

And by the way, it was composed using mostly an iPad, with just a few other instruments.

You'll need to have a membership to their fan club to download the album, but anyone can listen for free. The album will also have an official release, and hard copy, next year.

The album has a much slower and more basic vibe than the Gorillaz' normal high-production, technically superior collections. But considering the band had just 32 days to make the music, with the added task of composing partially on an iPad, you can't help being at least a little impressed.

The use of the iPad was partially what led the band to record an album quickly in time for the holidays.

"I hope I'll be making the first record on an iPad," frontman Damon Albarn told the UK's NME music website back when he first began recording. "I fell in love with my iPad as soon as I got it, so I've made a completely different kind of record."

And even if you aren't a fan of the Gorillaz, you might enjoy a note they've put up, listing which iPad apps they used to make the album:

"Speak It! / SoundyThingie / Mugician / Solo Synth / Synth / Funk Box / Gliss / AmpliTube / Xenon / iElectribe / BS-16i / M3000 HD / Cleartune / iOrgel HD / Olsynth / StudioMiniXI / BassLine / Harmonizer / Dub Siren Pro / Moog Filatron"

So, music fans, take a fresh listen, or break out the new iPad you just unwrapped and start making your own album - you know, either because you're a digital music-making fan, or because you want to drown out that loud family member in the other room this holiday.

Who knows, maybe you too will have your own iPad band like these guys soon.

The limits that an ipad has makes it something of a story. Though this is no different than artists who use mediums like circuit bending in their music. Its taking something that wasnt intended for music production as a new medium for it. Gorrillaz is usually good for some quality off the beaten path stuff for sure.

hey chris, an ipad is not a pc. laptops are not a pc. i dont think you will find any modern person who would call it a pc anymore than one would call a phone a pc. otherwise youre tangling with semantics, and then a calculator is a pc. sorry. an ipad is made for a very narrow specific purpose and producing an album is not one, that is why its news.

Actually John, a laptop IS a PC. Are you confusing a PC with a desktop computer? As both laptops and desktops fall under the category of PC.

As to tablets and phones the specifications and labels are shifting with time. What is the distinction between a personal computer and a device that isn't a personal computer? The ability to run applications on it? Some might argue that smart phones as well as iDevices are the next generation of PCs...

hey robert, yeah once again it comes down to definition. "personal computer: a small digital computer based on a microprocessor and designed to be used by one person at a time".. this definition can be applied to a calculator. But we dont usually call a calculator a PC (even though it is). a PC is most commonly referring to a tower unit with a seperate, or built in monitor. Go into a local store and ask to be shown the PC's and youll be taken to the towers. Ask for the laptops and youll be taken to another place. If you go to the tablets and say "are these the PC's?" the guy will say no, sorry, i thought you wanted a tablet. Laptops are not PC's. Ipads are not PCs. Watches and phones are no PC's. Now why im typing this on Christmas day instead of being outside is beyond me. that's politically incorrect 😉

Dear John, laptops are still called PCs by many. Also, tablets are often times referred to "tablet PCs". Handheld PC was once a very common reference to palm pilots, which are what smart phones evolved from. So I think it depends on when and where you reference it. Because I certainly hear both types of references regarding pc and non-pc. So to say it is wrong to say a laptop is a PC is, well, wrong. Perhaps just slightly less popular.

Really? They are diverse and have a white singer, an asian girl guitarist , a black drummer and bend the rules as far as music genres go. So there goes your assumed perceptions, way to prove you belong in a trailer park somewhere drinking beer and watching neverending right hand turns on tv. Yeah there is a point to me saying the above rude statement, assuming is fun, but ignorant and makes everyone doing it look utterly foolish. Learn and listen before you speak up or you become a posterboy for why natural selection may not be a bad thing. Then again judging by the inherent whine in your comment you wouldn't know good music if it sat on your head.

@memyselfandi... NASCAR is bigger than than the NFL? Yes... a single racetrack might hold 100,000+ people for a single race of which there are less than 20 a year. The NFL has over 30 stadiums filled most weekends of 60k all damn Fall and Winter. And if you were to add up the Neilsens for ALL BROADCAST NFL matches and compared them to your neanderthal NASCAR, you'd be weeping. But since you don't know math, I guess you might not be.

But then again, I'm a soccer fan so therefore I'm sure Palin is telling you I'm a socialist.

@ Tommy Mack, being a soccer fan, I realize you don't know much about NASCAR. There are well over 100 NASCAR tracks "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_NASCAR_race_tracks". There are 36 races a year in the year in the Sprint cup series alone and another 35 in the Nationwide series. I don't know how many truck series races there are because I don't watch them. There are also more smaller series races every year. Beat that NFL.

No, no it wasn't. But it's a clever marketing stunt, in kahoots with Apple/CNN. It's BEYOND misleading to simply say, an album was made with and iPad or Trent Reznor made zero on a laptop. Those two statement barely scratch the surface of what ACTUALLY happened. And the Gorilliaz 'should' be ashamed to let their 'integrity' be tarnished by allowing themselves to fall for/be manipulated in such a 'novel' monetary driven....way.

Yet another opportunity for uninformed consumers to praise the overinflated and vastly overrated Apple Corp machine.

As a musician, I've heard it often said that the moment you take your first dollar at your craft, you are technically a sell out. I have no issues with where they make their bucks, so long as the folks paying like it. In any case there are many tools used post-production to make the final cut at a record, most of those have been computer-based for years. An ipad is superior in performance to computers I was using in post for my 100% digital setup back in '96 so that is not news. What is really news to me is a potentially renewed vehicle to make money in the music biz as part of the device or apps advertisement ecosystem (like writing jingles, which many now famous pop artists did back in the 70's and 80's)

Over react much? Stop thinking you have it all under your thumb. The lead singer of the band said He LIKES his iPad, that does not automatically imply he's in bed with apple, it just means he's into tech and willing to try new things. Let me guess, you simply thought because he is famous that his using of a common gadget in a new way is somehow a sign apple is paying him under the table? You're being ridiculous if you read more into it than him just wanting to try something new on a device that is, like it or not, in the hands of almost everyone. He never openly endorses anything and isn't spamming for apple on his site. Way to make it known how much of a blowhard you are.

    You lame dolts.

The iPad is what Apple wanted it to be, because of the thousands of Macintosh developers who have been working on apps for it. Those are the same app developers you PC using rednecks badmouthed for over a decade, for making 'easy to use, toy-like' programs for the Mac. Well, suck it up. Now go back to playing with your 'serious' machines and let the Apple users continue to have fun.

PC using rednecks hmm? Funny, last I checked most award winning games and tons of hollywood effects are done on PC's. Yet where are said games on your apple computers? There are VERY few that ever make it to mac OS and most of those are aging or cross platform released messes. A multi billion dollar a year industry that apple users can barely scratch the surface of (albeit they are FINALLY making nice progress on mobile devices). Now I will be fair, I like both platforms for various reasons, but come on, is it any more obvious when you get defensively backed into a corner? Guess you like being a one trick pony with an obvious chip on your lonely shoulder.

    Hey PC apologists,
Which is it? First you guys claim the iPad is only for consuming media and therefore doesn't count as a "pc", then when articles appear showing how the iPad is being used to create you claim it's just commercialism! Sounds like you're desperate to keep consumers from abandoning Windows. How much is MS paying you?

Alot of people freaking out over nothing here. Why not take time to applaud a group for taking something and use it to create something it wasn't originally intended? Give it a listen and judge it on its quality and whether it meets or exceeds expectations.

I bounce between apple and windows products for various things. They both have areas where they excel and fall behind. Most people who have any clue about music production recognize this and use both setups interchangeably. To many, this looks like a gimmick to sell a product, but to others its simply another medium to produce. You could never produce full quality music strictly on an I-Pad, but it does give some on the go ability to make some beats and synth work. The most unique and learned musicians (and especially producers) know that its not quality instruments alone that drive good music, but the creativity and ability to incorporate different media into their art.

I agree, this was written by a total music noob... People write music on their laptops all the time - with full synthesizing and sounds and recordings. Total waste of time reading. And the Gorillaz? after this, I don't think I want to be a fan of music groups that sell out this hard just to get attention and side money.

I don't believe they sold out at all. And the interesting part of the creation is that they put it together while on the road/tour, using sounds they picked up along the way. Give it a listen before knocking it. It is a good set of tracks. And I think it shows that with the new technology out there, i.e. IPad, more individuals will be able to express some creativity.

this is a rather big deal, as relates to the economic of music. As other posters have noted, yes, there are tons of artists composing and producing music on their laptops. But these are largely artists that have reached had mainstream awareness, wrongly or rightly. A group like ATLAS SOUND just released 3 albums worth of recordings for free. But most folks don't even know that artists main band, DEERHUNTER, who are tremendous and deserving of greater exposure. GORILLAZ are the 1st act with mainstream success (much commercial radio airplay, for instance) that has done this, and released it free immediately. Recording costs do not have to be astronimical for a band. Going in the studio for 9 months and trying to make your DARK SIDE OF THE MOON is an antique idea. This GORILLAZ lp may have just changed the game.
