Tsunami warning issued after strong quake in Pacific Ocean

A 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck in the Pacific Ocean's Vanuatu Islands region early Sunday, prompting a tsunami warning for the area, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake struck 135 kilometers (85 miles) west of the island of Tanna, Vanuatu and 1,740 kilometers (about 1,100 miles) off Australia's eastern coast just after midnight local time (8:16 a.m. ET).

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a regional warning for a part of the Pacific, including Vanuatu, New Caledonia and Fiji.

"An earthquake of this size has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami that can strike coastlines in the region near the epicenter within minutes to hours," the center said. "Authorities in the region should take appropriate action in response to this possibility."

The tsunami warning did not include the U.S. state of Hawaii, though some coastal areas of the islands could experience very rough seas and strong currents.

And how is your comment relevant?
According to most commentors, this story is about the existence of God apparently because the event occurred on Christmas Day in their time zone. It actually occurred early on Boxing Day – a day with no religious significance at all.
On that basis your comment is just as relevant as theirs, so Thanks!

Here is some of Gods Words for you

      Bible Prophecy

"Now as He (Jesus) sat on the Mount of Olives,

the disciples came to Him privately, saying,

‘Tell us, when will these things be?’

And ‘What will be the sign of Your coming,

and of the end of the Age?’"

      (Matt 24:3)

"Jesus answered and said to them ...
And there will be earthquakes in various (diverse) places,"
      (Matt 24:8)

      Please note . . .

This prophecy looked far into the future and into the day (and generation) when there would be worldwide communications available to report these worldwide earthquakes as they happen. 2000 years ago the people living in Jerusalem and Israel (to whom these prophecies were first given) would never have known these earthquakes in "diverse places" had ever taken place ...

So, although the world has always had earthquakes, false messiahs and prophets, wars, ethnic violence and strife, famines, and deadly diseases, Jesus Christ (Yeshua Ha'Mashiach in Hebrew) tells us that as a sign that we are entering into the last days we will see each of these increase in frequency and size. Described as "birth pangs," these "pains" will continue to grow worse and worse, coming closer and closer together, as signs we are preparing to enter the Apocalypse.

I don't believe in god either and people should respect your belief. There are plenty of great actors, theorists, and scientists that didn't believe in god. I think I read that Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, 2 actors that are highly respected, don't believe in god. Those of us who don't believe in god are not less important than those that do. Happy Holidays and I hope that all is ok for those in the Pacific Ocean area.

If God does not exist, neither does you. Is so easy to blame God for all the bad things that happens. Why cannot the Devil be blamed? All the bad things that happens on this world is his fault, not God, at least not my God, Jehovah..the creator of the heavens and the earth. He is a good God, and makes the sun rise, and the rain come down for all of us including you. If a clock is made by some one, the earth with all the life in it was made by our creator.

Nothing in the world today can either prove or disprove the existence of "God". Just shut up, open your presents, and thank "God" that you don't actually have to worry about if "He/She" exists or not, because it doesn't make a difference in your daily life! Be self-aware, and appreciate everything, because it exists, and that's way more meaningful than trying to imagine (like a child) that some incredible, omnipotent, trans-dimensional, savioresque rule-maker is watching over our every action.. ugh, if "He" does exist, then he obviously doesn't want us to know for sure either way. So don't waste your time arguing over something that cannot be proven. Merry Christmas.

I agree Globognic.. as a fellow Christian I am often ashamed of the way even church leaders try to bring the Creator down to our level.. measly tiny little planet, even smaller little tectonic plate.. how does this compare to the moment of Creation (the big bang) or the super-nova's we see from time to time...?

Praying for the folks of the South Pacific. I lived on a small island in the Fiji group as a volunteer for 15 months and this is no laughing matter. Thousands of people could die instantly with little or no warning. Most of the population in this region live in coastal regions to survive and they've already been battered the last few years by droughts, flash floods, and cyclones. A Tsunami is the last thing they need.

I am a scientist and a computer geek. But anyone can Google up the topic, or go to the USGS web site. There you will find the scientific evidence that shows that earthquake frequency has not increased.

We do have better earthquake detection systems, so more small quakes in out-of-the-way places are reported. No surprise there. Perhaps more important, CNN has found that people will click on links to earthquake stories, thus increasing their advertising revenues.
