NFL fines Brett Favre $50,000

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre was fined $50,000 by the National Football League for failing to cooperate with an investigation into whether he sent sexually explicit messages to women, the league said Wednesday.

However, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, based on the evidence available, "could not conclude that Favre violated league policies relating to workplace conduct," the league said.

Favre was alleged to have sent inappropriate messages to Jenn Sterger, a female employee of the New York Jets while he was on the Jets roster in 2008.

"The forensic analysis could not establish that Favre sent the objectionable photographs to Sterger," the league's statement said.

It also said Sterger had not engaged in any inappropriate activity.

He was fined to pay for the investigation. I'm sick of hearing about all these NFl fines. The league found it's way to make up for the bad economy. Most of the players are over paid anyways, but come on. The NFL should give a fine proceeds to charity if the infraction is about public conduct.

There has never been any love lost between Green Bay and the Bears but did you see the hit the Bears rookie put on Farve, a rookie took him down. Best play this year by far. He should have stayed retired the first time, would have saved his family the embarrassment. Go Bears

The NFL has the right to fine. The sad part is $50,000 to him is like $50 to us. More annoying then actually hurting. It was probably the best that they could muster considering it should be his last season.

How does the NFL have a right to fine?

They are not a police force or investigative unit.

The NFL even states Commissioner Roger Goodell, based on the evidence available, "could not conclude that Favre violated league policies relating to workplace conduct," the league said.

Is there not a question of Civil Liberties being violated?

He was essentially charged, tried, and sentenced with out a valid or proper investigation or trial, against his rights guaranteed by the Fifth Amendment in due process.

This isn't about Favre or how much money he makes. It's about exerting authority where none exists.

Also fines incurred by players are legally considered business expenses and therefor tax deductible.

Read the article, folks, he was fined for "not cooperating with the investigation," not for what he did or didn't do with Sterger. And the fines go to the NFL to be disbursed to a number of different charitable organizations.

This dude could have been NFL royalty... 4 years ago. However, as a newly divorced 40+yo, after listening to the voicemail he left Sterger, it's nice to see a multi-millionaire, superstar NFL quarterback that don't know how to ask for a date, either! "Um... so... call me... or txt... or something... yeah."

and the lack of evidence. The NFL admitted there was not sufficient evidence to ascertain wrongdoing. In court, there is a finding for this situation: NOT guilty. What if you were charged with a crime and there was insufficient evidence to convict you, so you were penalized for failing to cooperate with the prosecution? Doesn't seem quite right, does it? It's not like anyone was harmed, except Farve.

pabloconrad and Rich – Read the article before you post. The NFL is a private company and can fine their employees if they want to. This has nothing to do with civil law. He was not fined because of what he did to her, he was fined for obstructing the investigation. Which leads me to belive that he is guilty anyway.

Excellent response! Because someone doesn't allow themselves to be photographed nude (most-likely what the league wanted to compare private parts), they MUST be guilty! I'm curious, if some random cop comes up to your house and says "maybe you did something wrong, can I come in and strip search you to be sure?" you're going to let him? If you don't then you MUST be guilty right?!?!
