Stanford ends UConn's record winning streak

The record winning streak of the University of Connecticut's women's basketball team is over, ended by the school that was the last to beat it more than two years ago.

Stanford beat the top-ranked Huskies 71-59 on Thursday night in Palo Alto, California, halting UConn's winning streak at 90 games, the longest in NCAA Division I basketball history.

The loss comes just nine days after UConn, picking up its 89th consecutive win in a game against Florida State, surpassed the men's Division I streak of 88 set by coach John Wooden's UCLA teams from 1971 to 1974.

Jeanette Pohlen led the Cardinal (9-2) with 31 points.  This season's record for two-time defending national champion UConn fell to 12-1.

"Congratulations to Connecticut for an awesome streak, and they gave us a great game," Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer (pictured) told ESPN. "Our team believed, our team came out and worked very hard."

UConn coach Geno Auriemma, when asked after the game what it would take to put together a similar streak in college basketball, told ESPN: "You’ve got to have good players, you’ve got to get lucky, and all your best players have to play great every night, and we didn’t get that tonight. And … the other team has to have something to do with it. ... They made us play bad, and they played well, so they deserve to win."

Just minutes after the game, Stanford's athletics website was linking to a site selling a T-shirt celebrating the victory. The T-shirt reads, in part: "All good things must come to an end."

UConn had moved the streak to 90 games on Tuesday with an 85-42 win over Pacific.

Stanford had been the last to defeat UConn, beating the Huskies in the Final Four in April 2008. UConn beat Stanford in last season's NCAA tournament championship game, 53-47.

The streak came years after UConn already had established itself as a top women's program. Of the 10 longest winning streaks in Division I women's basketball, the Huskies hold four, including the previous longest (70, from 2001 to 2003).

This game is an example of why all college basketball sucks. THe corrupt NCAA allows and probably encourages homer refs like those clowns who officiated this game. Instead of black and white stripes, these dishonest refs should have been required to wear Stanford uniforms.

I caught some of that game. Good post up play, nice 3's – smart basketball. I have a new respect for Women's Basketball & can say quite frankly that the guys dissin' the girls on this thread wouldn't be able to hang with them anyway. What's wrong – did a girl beat back in the day and now you're flippin' burgers at the Kingl? Losers

Glad this side show is over. How this girls winning streak can be compared to UCLA's winning streak against great mens college teams of the 70's is laughable. The way the media is fawning over UCon's streak is too, laughable.

You clearly haven't watched it. Division 1 is still Division 1 – these are top programs and this team is FAR more technically proficient than any men's team – passing, routes, plays. It's not as physical or fast maybe but it is fairly physical nonetheless.
Anyway – watch a game. And if you don't watch and don't care, then why bother to post your uninformed opinion?

I can't even run the length of the court I'm so out of shape. I wouldn't know how to pleasure a woman so I pick on them from the privacy of my mom's basement.

hey guys, remember when I said Uconn was more technically proficient then the ucla bruins? we all had a good laugh with that one. Uconn couldn't beat ucla today, in all seriousness. too bad the little girls couldn't be actually good at a sport. and don't tell me they are good. if your good you play in the NBA. period. they don't play in the NBA, so they can't be even as good as men. proof? they don't play in the NBA, they're not good enough. I don't care what anyone says, if they were equal or better then men, they would play the same game. but no, they're not, because ifthey were no one would have a problem putting them in the NBA. but they can't compete, play, and its boring. end of.
