Monday's intriguing people

Amanda Knox

Amanda Knox, jailed in Italy after being convicted of murdering a college classmate, thinks the celebrity status she’s gained because of the case is “ridiculous,” according to media reports.

Knox’s stepfather, Chris Mellas, says the attention focused on his step-daughter is “absolutely bizarre,” KOMO-TV in Knox’s hometown of Seattle, Washington, reported.

"She thinks it's ridiculous. There are nine books (about her), with another four or five that I'm aware of in the works; two movies in the works right now; seven or eight documentaries that I'm aware of," Mellas is quoted as saying.

Hayden Panettiere will star as Knox in a movie for cable’s Lifetime network, according to the KOMO report.

Knox, who was sentenced to 26 years in prison in the 2007 murder of Meredith Kirchner during what prosecutors called a drug-fueled sex game, is appealing the conviction.

Gao Zhi Xiang

Gao Zhi Xiang, a 19-year-old from China, is pleading with Canadian immigration authorities to allow him to stay in Toronto to care for his 8-year-old brother, left orphaned when their mother died of cancer more than a year ago.

Gao traveled to Canada on a tourist visa in late 2009 to visit his dying mother, who had been given legal asylum in the country after fleeing religious persecution in China for being a member of an underground church, according to a report in the Toronto Star.

When Lin Mei Zhang fled China, she took her younger son, Zhi Xin, along, and Canada awarded the boy permanent residency status last year, according to the Star report.

But Gao, who traveled to Canada on a tourist visa that has long since expired, is not entitled to permanent residency.

Zhi Xin will become a ward of the state when Gao is sent back to China as the boy’s other current caregiver is an uncle who is also facing deportation, the newspaper reported.

Gao is to meet with Canadian immigration officials on Tuesday to arrange for his departure. He’s hoping they have a change of heart.

"We just hope that immigration officials will open their hearts and not separate me and my brother. We were abandoned by our father. We have lost our mother. It is just he and I now,” the Star quoted him as saying.

Harold Camping

Harold Camping says the end of the world begins on May 21.

The 88-year-old Christian radio network boss from Oakland, California, says he’s applied a mathematical formula to biblical prophecies and that’s what the numbers say: Get ready for the end times this spring.

And what about the Mayans and their calendar that puts the end of the world in 2012?

"That date has not one stitch of biblical authority," Camping told the San Francisco Chronicle.

The paper points out that Camping has been wrong before, once gathering followers on September 6, 1994, to greet Christ upon his return to Earth. Camping told the paper he messed up the math on that one.

It will never make sense to me as to why people want to "meet" Jesus so desperately. I mean this in a broad sense. Some people will see this and start typing until their fingers break as to why they can't wait until Jesus returns.

I think the Knox case is crazy- no one has the full story it seems and I cannot judge her guilty or innocent based on what the media has shown- but our culture of obsessing over "celebrities" is disgusting. To Harold Camping check out the Bible sometime "Mark 13:32 "No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father." So Harold- are you god? I didn't think so, but keep crunching those numbers

Sad to say, but if he wants to stay with his young brother, send him home to China. The other alternative is that he goes back to China and his brother becomes a ward of the state.

IMHO, they should allow him to join the military and let him get on the path to citizenship. That's how my illegal ancestors got to be legal (informally at that time).

@rh–didn't you hear that the Dream Act was voted down? No path to citizenship for those who enter the armed forces or go to college. Or does that only apply to Hispanics? Hmmmm.......

Much as you would like to believe that Canada is the 51st state, it is an independent country, with its own immigration laws. So no point in spewing your xenophobic comments.

@julia: Apparently your reading comprehensions is at the same level as a nice pebble. The immigration section of this article is about Canada....DREAM Act has nothing to do with Canada. Ever hear of the saying, "It is better to appear a fool, than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt"?

Whenever I'm feeling a little blue or dense, I can count on people like you to make me feel better about myself...I remember I'm fortunate enough to not be as misguided or stupid as people like you.

Ms. Knox has been fairly tried with her Italian boyfriend and BOTH condemned. There was a clear investigation, what doubts?...What you are reading here in the US is lopsided and mostly thanks to her parents' deep pockets. Mom and daddy even tried to involve Ms. Clinton who, wisely enough, refrained from interferring with another country magistrates.
Cute (? Now cold-blod murderers are cute?) or Hot (? Like the blod she spilled?) or whatever...She has been found guilty with another person (her Italian boyfriend) and condemned. Nobody in their right mind has even attempted an estradition to the USA, there are no grounds at all to bring her here or convert the sentence into anything else, unless she appeals like in any other civilized country and wins the appeal.
Italy is not a place for "hot murderers" to go and seek inpunity on an hideous crime. Tell the family of the English girl she murdered that she is "cute, hot etc etc etc". Are we kidding? She committed a crime on Italian soverreign territory, she has gone through what any Italian would also go through if committed a crime. Really, stop making her a martyr, she is nothing close to that. Thanks. PGG

There are several victims in this case. Certainly Meredith is one, at the hands of Rude Guede, the knife carrying, break-in specialist, who left DNA all over the place and ran to hide in Germany. (Pretty clear that he killed Mez)

Knox is another victim of the Italian Justice (LOL) system. Imprisoned by a corrupt prosecutor, an under-educated jury, a vicious press and slow motion justice.

Think of both girls involved in this crime. Remember that ruining Knox's life will not bring back Meredith and Rude is the sole killer.

The re-testing of the DNA by a QULAIFIED lab will set her free.

@Harold Camping...there is no hidden secret formula for determining when the last day before God rids this world of those ruining it occurs. "He will bring to ruin those ruining the earth" say's one biblical prophecy, one of over two-hundred. "All scripture was written so that those living in the last days(plural) might have hope". Hope for the future, not help trying to figure out when the last day(singular) will be. But you twist the bible to fleece your flock, just like the others claiming to be 'holy men' do. "Come and drink life's water FREE" is Jesus' true invitaion. By his teachings and way of life, Jesus exposes people like you Harold.

No one knows when the end will come. Not even Jesus knew, only His Father. The times are getting so immoral, that the end can almost be seen in a distant horizon. The world will be destroyed when the one absolute morality is fully overtaken by the relativist morality. This will mean that there will be not a single righteous human being left, save a few God's friends and disciples. It will mean the coming of Armageddon or the coming of the Righteous One! He will come in the clouds, as He told us. He will come to save His friends and followers! He will destroy those who taught otherwise ... and they are legion!

"The Father is greater than I" said Jesus. Jesus often prayed to his heavenly Father. If Jesus were actually God himself, his prayers would have had no real meaning. He taught his followers how to pray to his heavenly Father, not to himself. He instructed that prayers to the one true God should be made through himself, not to himself. And it was Jesus, not God, who died for our inherited imperfections, our sins. God offered his only-begotten son on our behalf. If Jesus and his Father were the same person, this would have been nothing more than a con-job, a lie. Don't take the rich preachers and priest's word on this. Study your bible and know the truth, and be set free.. (from troll"s even) he he
