Gibbs to 'TP' White House if Auburn Tigers win championship

As his beloved Tigers get ready for the BCS National Championship game Monday, Robert Gibbs wants to bring an Auburn University tradition to the White House.

Gibbs, the soon-to-be ex-White House press secretary, told CBS college football guru Tony Barnhart that if Auburn wins, he will return to “roll” or “TP” the White House, or at least part of it. The “The Tony Barnhart Show” is scheduled to air Thursday night.

According to Politico, Gibbs said, “If Auburn wins, I will come back. I will get a little agreement with the Secret Service. We’ll put a couple of rolls (of toilet paper) up there, and then I can help take it down so it doesn’t look like we trashed the place.”

Some of you might be thinking, What the …??

Being an Auburn grad, I know a little about this tradition. After Auburn wins a football game or other significant sporting event, fans flock to the intersection of College Street and Magnolia Avenue.

It’s known as Toomer’s Corner, after the drugstore that produces the lemonade that Esquire magazine once suggested was made by God himself.

Fans mob the intersection after a victory, often forcing police to simply shut down two major arteries through downtown.

There, we hurl roll after roll of toilet paper into the live oaks across from the drugstore. After a big win, everything on the corner is covered in the white stuff, even the power lines and eagle-adorned brick entryways to the university.

It can get rather messy, as you can see here.

Gibbs attended North Carolina State University, where he played goalkeeper for the Wolfpack soccer team, but he was born and raised in the city of Auburn.

Gibbs told Barnhart that he thinks President Obama understands how important Monday’s game between Auburn and the Oregon Ducks is to him, Politico reported. Gibbs further said he’s worn the same Auburn shirt for every Tiger victory this year, even when everyone else was wearing a suit.

“He gets how big a deal this is for me. He enjoys and loves college football,” Gibbs told Barnhart. “I’ve watched some of their games in my office. I’ve got a pretty decent-size TV in there, thankfully. Sometimes it’s hard. One week we were on the road, and I had to talk to the advance people about making sure that we had some TVs and could watch some games if we needed to.”

War Eagle, Mr. Gibbs. See you in Glendale.

TPing is , to be frank, just plain stupid. It wastes paper and by its very nature trashes the environment. This guy is an adult who works for the president? Now that is appalling.

I wonder if he does TP the White House and I feel insulted or offended would they fire him, would the media scrutinize him and question his ability to speak for the White House? He is doing this for Morale, to make light of a non life or death situation? I bet if Captain Owen Honors of the USS Enterprise TP'd the Enterprise we would see a firestorm and heads would roll.

I understand the UCMJ and they have to punish him in some way. A letter of reprimand or something to that matter. Criticize his humor, his lack of etiquette as an Officer but NOT HIS ABILITY TO LEAD. He has already proven that.

Quite a few quacks replied to this first post .... too many people have little or no respect for the White House and what it is supposed to represent.

Surely mental midget Gibbs can TP his own house instead of bringing worldwide ridicule to the symbol of the White house. Just because it is an Auburn tradition doesn't make it right and proper to use the White House for such childish stunits.

      Obama should fire his jerk.

@Chris ( and all others who think that TPing Toomer's Corner shows a lack of intelligence) : Have you ever BEEN to college ? Only half of the education you receive is in the classrooms/labs/etc. The other, less formal half takes place when you aren't studying, when you are learning to be an adult on your own terms, building traditions & bonding with your roommates & fellow students. Some of that involves cutting loose while showing some school spirit.

If the Ducks win, what are they going to do – sit under their umbrellas, holding hands & singing "Kumbaya" ?

Only someone that doesn't know anything about tradition would think it's stupid. That has been a tradition since BEFORE TV and the News. Back when things came over the teletype, when Auburn was away they would take the paper and throw it in the trees if Auburn won to let the fans and students know. If there was no paper in the trees then everyone knew they didn't win. So now we have TV and we all go roll Toomers corner with cheap TP as a TRADITION. I'm an adult too and if my Tigers win Monday night I'll be at Toomers with thousands of others rolling it. Maybe you should find a tradition to participate in and get over calling things you know nothing about stupid.

How about instead of honoring a tradition from a school you didn't even attend, creating an adult version of the tradition and donate TP to the people who need it? Seems absolutely wasteful when we are still dealing with an economic crisis. I'm sure people who have time to post their judgments on a blog aren't really in a jam to get TP (like me) but there are some families out there...

I would even think AU fans would get some props in the media for changing up the tradition after the win and donating stuff.

      lorraine ~
being an auburn fan i am obviously biased but lets be honest, saying that oregon has it anyway you look at it is in no way accurate. Your team has played only 1 team that was ranked above the top 20 position while auburn played 5. so the stats you are seeing about passing, rushing, etc are based on two totally contrasting types of opponents. If auburn played the same teams that your team had played we would probably have had much more impressive stats. I know everyone is sick about hearing out the sec is such a tough conference but auburn really has gone again some pretty challenging opponents this year and thats not to say that oregon didnt have a tough road too. Also, about your comment of how it dosnt make sense that we are called the tigers goes back to the past when teams in the south that had especially strong football teams were sometimes called tigers and if you are going to complain you should also take it up with the other hundreds of school that have the same mascot. Thanks for pointing out that they don't live in alabama though we really needed your help with that. Someone has been nice enough to already try to explain the meaning of War Eagle to you and hopefully you caught on that it has nothing to do with our mascot. In the end, you can bash auburn as much as you want for things you can not understand but its going to come down to what happens on the field on monday night.
Either way it goes, both teams deserve it and hopefully in the future you do your research instead of coming on a discussion board and blabbing about things with which you are unfamiliar!

Truth is, sports changes even the smartest and most well rounded of us. Let me give you an example. I am a Gator fan living in the heart of OU country. 2 years ago when they played in the National Championship, I was in full Gator gear, and minding my own business. I received 10 death threats over the space of 2 hours. College football changes people, the fanbases are rabid, and I have no problem with the man tping the White House. Its what fans do.

Since when did tigers begin to abound in Alabama? Outsde of freak show circuses, that is.

Quack, quack, quack, quack – at least ducks naturally habitat in and can be found in every corner of the great state of Oregon.

We are the tigers but the War Eagle cry comes from many years ago during a big game an eagle flew over the stadium for most of the game and Auburn won so that is where the War Eagle comes from. Auburn has the best raptor center in the US partly because of that.

As the the Ducks they will get plucked on the 10th!

You are mostly right....the story is actually that in the 1880's and 1890's there was a professor at Auburn who was a veteran of the Civil War. After one long battle he was walking back to camp and he came across an injured golden eagle. He took care of it and it stayed with him and he was known around the campus for having the eagle on his shoulder. The eagle was known around campus as "The War Eagle". Then in 1892, at the first Auburn football game vs UGA, Auburn was losing at halftime. At the end of halftime the eagle took off and flew around the stadium several times and this caused people to yell out "War Eagle" and Auburn came back to win the game. So Auburn has kept an eagle around ever since.

This is also the reason that Auburn started a Vet School because the eagles needed a place to get cared for. Also why the Southeastern Raptor Center is in Auburn.
