Plane with 105 aboard crashes in Iran

A passenger plane carrying 105 people crashed in a snowy and mountainous region of northwestern Iran on Sunday, news agencies in the country reported.

Several people suffered severe injuries but at least 50 people have been rescued, the news agencies said.

At least 10 people with severe wounds were hospitalized, an emergency services official, Mojtaba Khalebi, said, according to the semi-official Iranian Labor News Agency.

"The number of dead has not yet been determined because the priority is to save those that have been injured first," the news agency quoted him as saying. "Not all of the passengers have been killed. A number are still alive."

Severe weather at the crash site is making rescue operations difficult, he told the news agency.

Fifty to 60 people were taken from the plane with injuries, the Mehr news agency quoted Gholareza Masoomi, the head of Iran's Emergency Services, as saying.

"Fortunately, reports say that plane did not explode upon impact," and the crash may have happened when the plane was already nearing its destination and close to the ground, the news agency quoted him as saying.

The crash happened near Orumiyeh, a city in the mountainous Azarbaijan province, the semi-official Fars news agency said.

The IranAir aircraft crashed near Lake Orumiyeh, said Gholam-Reza Masoumi, head of the State Emergency Center in Iran, according to state-run Press TV.

The Boeing 727 took off from Tehran after a one-hour delay and was flying to Orumiyeh, Press TV said.

They cant buy anything else...not a question of saving money, its a question of sanctions, they had sanctions against them for 30yrs, cant even buy spare parts for their 30 yr old fleet of boeing jets, so the only options left are russian style or domestic spare parts.

There are many more reasons of planes crashes – not only the country of origin. Find more info first, before posting such a preconceived opinion.

Actually it was a Fokker-100. Do your research before you comment. And it's because of American sanctions that this happen, because the Americans won't let the Iranians have spare parts exported to them. How nice.

Clarkson- did you seriously just say, "being in a plane crash can never be fun"?
Here's a thought: planes crash. It happens all over the world, and is always devastating to those who had family members involved. It's not about what's "fun" or not. It's simply life.

CNN clearly states Boeing 727 a long time no longer in production plane – only see them now in places like South America and Africa. Steam gauge – very old technology, but – they still work.

you obviously did not read the article. It was a Boeing 727. Either way, if you are looking for accurate information on Iran, Jewro-British-American "news" media is not the place to get it. I go to presstv (which the media in the US/Britain despises because of its truthfulness)

As you can see, it was Boeing 727 , and it's not Russian ...
But it doesn't matter that the plane was American or Russian or where ever !
It's about the age of the plane... It was 40 years old !!!
Iran had 3 Boeing 727s , one of them had a crash in 1996 and the second one had the same ending like the other one
      well , 1 more to go !!!
one more thing, as you know, the plane took off from Tehran after a one-hour delay... because of the weather ! Iran air had two other flights before this one which had been canceled by the pilots because of the weather ! The third one didn't take it seriously. So here we are !
It's not just about sanctions and the age of the planes! But I do agree if UN and what ever else really cares about innocent people's life here in Iran, they should support this industry of Iran !
