Plane with 105 aboard crashes in Iran

A passenger plane carrying 105 people crashed in a snowy and mountainous region of northwestern Iran on Sunday, news agencies in the country reported.

Several people suffered severe injuries but at least 50 people have been rescued, the news agencies said.

At least 10 people with severe wounds were hospitalized, an emergency services official, Mojtaba Khalebi, said, according to the semi-official Iranian Labor News Agency.

"The number of dead has not yet been determined because the priority is to save those that have been injured first," the news agency quoted him as saying. "Not all of the passengers have been killed. A number are still alive."

Severe weather at the crash site is making rescue operations difficult, he told the news agency.

Fifty to 60 people were taken from the plane with injuries, the Mehr news agency quoted Gholareza Masoomi, the head of Iran's Emergency Services, as saying.

"Fortunately, reports say that plane did not explode upon impact," and the crash may have happened when the plane was already nearing its destination and close to the ground, the news agency quoted him as saying.

The crash happened near Orumiyeh, a city in the mountainous Azarbaijan province, the semi-official Fars news agency said.

The IranAir aircraft crashed near Lake Orumiyeh, said Gholam-Reza Masoumi, head of the State Emergency Center in Iran, according to state-run Press TV.

The Boeing 727 took off from Tehran after a one-hour delay and was flying to Orumiyeh, Press TV said.

This is Allah's will. It was time for these great Iranians to meet Allah. Allah is all things and sometimes brings Jihad and other times takes the fruit of the Earth as he has now. Peace be onto the Muslim nation. Blessed be the profit.

It was an American plane – a 727 which has not been made in years. As to turning this into something political, leave that out. 105 people lost their lives.

To those who think the Iranians deserved this, you know nothing about the Iranian people or their history. Probably most don't like their President so I wouldn't hold that against them. Most have nothing against the U.S. and want to live in peace. And that is sort of incredible considering how much the U.S. has screwed them over in the past. The U.S. overthrew the democratically-elected president and installed the Shah who was brutal to the Iranian people. The Iranians finally kicked him out and the U.S. was angry so they supported Hussein in Iraq and his war against Iran. Now they place sanctions on Iran. And we get idiots like McCain with his "Bomb, bomb, bomb Iran rhetoric". The plane crash was another tragic event for a people trying to survive in a tough environment.

A lot of you, and you know who you are, should be ashamed of yourself with such igorant and racial comments. It is a horrible event when lives are lost in a plane crash regardless the type plane. The age of the B727, the delay and many other thing will be reviewed. By the way, there is nothing unsafe about Airbus or Boeing aircraft.

Obviously, a majority of you who have commented do not possess the level of maturity to be posting on such matters. So to those I say this – get offline and keep your childish quarrels on the school bus, where your opinion might mean something.
