Plane with 105 aboard crashes in Iran

A passenger plane carrying 105 people crashed in a snowy and mountainous region of northwestern Iran on Sunday, news agencies in the country reported.

Several people suffered severe injuries but at least 50 people have been rescued, the news agencies said.

At least 10 people with severe wounds were hospitalized, an emergency services official, Mojtaba Khalebi, said, according to the semi-official Iranian Labor News Agency.

"The number of dead has not yet been determined because the priority is to save those that have been injured first," the news agency quoted him as saying. "Not all of the passengers have been killed. A number are still alive."

Severe weather at the crash site is making rescue operations difficult, he told the news agency.

Fifty to 60 people were taken from the plane with injuries, the Mehr news agency quoted Gholareza Masoomi, the head of Iran's Emergency Services, as saying.

"Fortunately, reports say that plane did not explode upon impact," and the crash may have happened when the plane was already nearing its destination and close to the ground, the news agency quoted him as saying.

The crash happened near Orumiyeh, a city in the mountainous Azarbaijan province, the semi-official Fars news agency said.

The IranAir aircraft crashed near Lake Orumiyeh, said Gholam-Reza Masoumi, head of the State Emergency Center in Iran, according to state-run Press TV.

The Boeing 727 took off from Tehran after a one-hour delay and was flying to Orumiyeh, Press TV said.

This is thanks to the US embargo to Iran where they cannot buy new airplanes or spare parts for their planes. That is terrorism!

You guys, make a difference between Iranian people and politics, Iranian don't hate Americans in opposite to what you hear.. For your info there is a small minority who show hate to US because of benefits they get from government, just like everywhere in the world...
Those killed were normal citizens like us, be respectful...

I have persian friends and they ALL say the same thing
The Iranian people do not hate the US or the west
Its the opposite-They admire our freedom and opportunity
Only a small percentage of the Persians are crackpot religious zealots-Just like other religions!
The rest are just normal people trying to live their lives....

I agree, these are human beings. These are fellow humans who have family, friends, and loved ones. Iran has been under sanction for years and sadly their airlines have suffered due to lack of spare parts and access to overhaul capacity.

Some of the comments here make me disgusted to be a human.

Yes but Paul. Unfortunately the crackpot zealots are the ones who dictate what happens in the country.
So unfortunately the good populace are the ones who are going to get bombed.

Zoy – you are so correct. Thanks for that post. I only wish that more moderate Muslims would post on CNN and show some anger at the dictatorship happening in their native Iran. Most Iranians that I know are great people and are just like the rest of us. Unfortunately they are pigeon-holed in Iran because if they speak out against the Islamic Republic gov't, they will be taken away from their families and sometimes much worse.

Don't forget that the weather could have easily have played a significant part in today's crash. Let's not cast the blame on anyone untill the facts have been laid out. We have to pray for the victims and survivors of the crash, even if they worship in a different way than we do. After all, we are all trying to get to the same place, Heaven. As a side note on the age of planes, there are numerous DC-3's that are pushing 70 years old, and still flying!!
