Plane with 105 aboard crashes in Iran

A passenger plane carrying 105 people crashed in a snowy and mountainous region of northwestern Iran on Sunday, news agencies in the country reported.

Several people suffered severe injuries but at least 50 people have been rescued, the news agencies said.

At least 10 people with severe wounds were hospitalized, an emergency services official, Mojtaba Khalebi, said, according to the semi-official Iranian Labor News Agency.

"The number of dead has not yet been determined because the priority is to save those that have been injured first," the news agency quoted him as saying. "Not all of the passengers have been killed. A number are still alive."

Severe weather at the crash site is making rescue operations difficult, he told the news agency.

Fifty to 60 people were taken from the plane with injuries, the Mehr news agency quoted Gholareza Masoomi, the head of Iran's Emergency Services, as saying.

"Fortunately, reports say that plane did not explode upon impact," and the crash may have happened when the plane was already nearing its destination and close to the ground, the news agency quoted him as saying.

The crash happened near Orumiyeh, a city in the mountainous Azarbaijan province, the semi-official Fars news agency said.

The IranAir aircraft crashed near Lake Orumiyeh, said Gholam-Reza Masoumi, head of the State Emergency Center in Iran, according to state-run Press TV.

The Boeing 727 took off from Tehran after a one-hour delay and was flying to Orumiyeh, Press TV said.

Iran needs to go. They are holding up progress in the world. On the same token...the United States needs to end its relationship with Israel and allow them to fend for themselves. They are childish, spoiled brats.

its good to see that there were many survivors. iran's air industry suffers from the embargoes and it makes do with the resources that are available. it has to buy sub par parts from 3rd parties or make them itself. the irony is that america's vendetta against iran is the driving force behind making iran stronger and more self-sufficient. case-in-point, iran is the only country in the region other than israel with a weapon's industry. the rest of the middle east buys its weapons from america or russia.

That's balderdash. Iran has only itself to blame for the situation.

If IranAir is flying 727s, they must really be old and in dire need of replacement parts.

Wow. What pathetic souls you people are! Did you stop to think that maybe these were passengers going to visit their families like you and I do when we travel? Just because they have a leader who is out of his mind doesn't make all the citizens of Iran bad people. Do you remember the protests they experienced last year...citizens fighting for liberation and their rights? Take your racist heads out of your a**es. You neighbors and peers...are the ones that make me worry about the state of the world. Have some compassion and get some f'ing lives.

A lot of you don't seem to get this...the knowlegde you have all gained pertaining to what's happening in this world has been "filtered". Do you really not get that? You are fed certain "facts" through the media and texts and are guided in the direction to believe that all muslims in general are horrible..and that America is a great country saving and protecting the world and it's people. False. Stand up and find out the truth. Utilize your intelligance to research and find the real facts. For now, let's show some respect to the people who died, regardless of who they are and what we could have been one of your family members.
