Suspect in federal custody after Tucson shooting

A gunman intended to assassinate a U.S. representative when he opened fire outside an Arizona supermarket Saturday, killing six and wounding 12 including the congresswoman, the local sheriff said hours after the shooting.

U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was in critical condition and unconscious late Saturday after surgery for a single gunshot wound to the head, a hospital spokeswoman said. The dead included a federal judge and a 9-year-old girl, authorities said.

One suspect was in custody immediately after the shooting in Tucson, Arizona. Investigators were "actively in pursuit" of a second man whom they believed may be involved in the attempted assassination, Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik said Saturday night.

Two people tackled the suspected shooter, stopping a spray of bullets from what federal and state law enforcement sources described as a 9mm Glock outfitted with a 30-round magazine. Dupnik declined to name the 22-year-old suspect. An Arizona law enforcement source and a federal law enforcement source, meanwhile, identified the suspect as Jared Lee Loughner. The suspect, who was being held by local authorities, was later taken into custody by the FBI, said Deputy Jason Ogan, Pima County Sheriff's Department spokesman.

Dupnik said investigators are not convinced that the suspect came to the supermarket alone. He said investigators were looking for a man seen near the suspect. Authorities did not know whether the person they sought actually had any connection with Loughner, a law enforcement source told CNN. Authorities have a piece of evidence that indicates this second individual was in close proximity to the store, the source said, but declined
to elaborate.

Investigators were trying to interview witnesses to determine if there was a connection between the two men, the source said. That source also said authorities were seeking search warrants for a residence and for a vehicle in connection with the suspect in custody.

The attack happened about 10 minutes after the start of a previously scheduled constituent meeting outside a Safeway grocery store. Although U.S. Capitol Police said there was no evidence of a broader threat involving federal officials, the agency said in a statement it had advised other members of Congress to take "reasonable and prudent precautions
regarding their personal safety and security."

Arizona IS bigoted its obvious so why are you folks in denial. And perhaps if sarah palin was not so preoccupied with guns and crosshairs she wouldnt be mentioned in that venue. But she is. you guys keep denying whats out there to be seen and read with our own eyes. Wake Up Americans and see the enemy within! once you acknowledge how rediculous she is youll feel better. she has an unhealthy preoccupation with guns. sorry but the truth hurts sometimes but it is the truth.

Im not saying sarah palin put a hit out on Rep Giffords. i am saying that her take the 20 back message with crosshairs on the states are a mixed message to idiots like this guy in custody. as a politician in the public eye she should think before she sends messages that gun toting azzholes can easily misinterpret as a call to arms. if they see crosshairs they think thats the go ahead from a person in government. just saying

Why are most people leaving comments trying to use this apprehensible act for a platform to view thier political dislikes. Lets put the blame where it should be, these sick crazies who committed this unspeakable act.

My deepest sympathes go out to the families who have and are suffering losses from these acts. I hope justice will be served accordingly.

Ok,let me see if I have this right. Professional athletes must have a polished, clean image for our children's or wrong? Our elected officials CAN and DO act like HITLER to get mind control over us.WE CANNOT ALLOW OUR LEADERS TO CONTINUE THIS WAY. Sarah palin for president, take a good look at why she ran in the last election and even if you disliked president Obama, intelligent people have to admit something stinks! A 22 year old is an unlikely political assasnin, conspiracy, formal or just asick fetish for palin. IT DOESN'T MATTER. People in leadership had better start acting like adults. And that's a veiled warning, you might get the kindergarten paddle,a little easier than the crosshairs!

It appears this was a troubled person, easily persuaded by someone on the fringe to take the action he did. This person of interest doesn't appear to be a progressive or educated by the photograph, and the truth is still out, but the hatred comments of the crosshairs, targets, and the rheortic on the right brings out the hatred and bigotry as we saw in the healthcare debate and the comments against Obama. Will we as a society ever learn that our actions do have consequences.

Marlenes comments echoed that of that sheriff last nite l was shocked when he made his comments – he basically was sayin Arizona has become a hotbed for racism n bigotry and that all the rhetoric he hears in the media is "divisive" guess what it is. It started the day Obama took office these tea people formed the got people to oppose health care like it was welfare or something most those people who oppose it are yuppies – they're rude disrupting Obamas speech – they took Michael VIcks case to the nth level caused all sorts of public hysteria behind that – guess what? They never talk about the approx 6000 people that were lynched in this country NEVER no one was ever prosecuted for those murders NO ONE – now that they control the house they're still being subversive they could all rot in hell far as lKm concerned. Than thy all will be able to see Russia from their back porch.

Amazing that people are more interested on blaming someone who isn't even there. It is the rwce bating left who have created this problem. Start blaming yourselves what you have created.

2 m mena u r right. Incendiaries at the state bldg in MD housing "homeland security," another addressed to the director, in D.C., and now this. All in a week's time. Domestic terrorism. If that young boy, and his teaparty mentor, who got away, were seen wearing turbins, well then... We are having a problem looking at the crosshairs on the bull's eye long enough to admit 'subversive has been Sara and friends, and still are.'

The young man was a chronic pot smoker who sat and watched conspiracy theory videos on youtube. The weed they're smoking today is worse than the acid people took in the 60's. The young man was arrested for drugs but nobody is reporting this, why? Because this rag CNN and other rag media only want their ratings to skyrocket from pitting people against each other. A** kicking marajuana smoked chronically from middle school up leads to schizophrenia. C'mon people do the research and don't be led by the media to bite and devour each other. All the press wants to do to us is divide and conquer for ratings

What I want to know is where did she stand on these two obscene wars half way around the world and of the obscene carnage that's going on over there. Nobody in the right-wing news media is saying anything about it. And why did this young man shoot her?
