NASA mission finds its first rocky planet outside our solar system

There goes the celestial neighborhood.

Scientists at the Kepler mission have discovered their first rocky planet outside our solar system, NASA announced Monday.

The exoplanet, called Kepler-10b, is 1.4 times the size of Earth and is the smallest found outside the reach of the sun's gravitational pull, NASA said Monday on its website.

The discovery came after 10 months of data-collecting by NASA's Kepler mission, tasked with finding Earth-like planets.

“The discovery of Kepler 10-b is a significant milestone in the search for planets similar to our own,” Douglas Hudgins, a Kepler scientist based in Washington, said in a news release. “Although this planet is not in the habitable zone, the exciting find showcases the kinds of discoveries made possible by the mission and the promise of many more to come,” he said.

A habitable zone is a region where liquid water can exist on a planet's surface, according to NASA's website.

We are looking for life on other planeta, or other planets we can live on. Why? We can't even get along with each other on this one. Go figure

of course there are other planets out there. are we so simple to think that we are the only life that god has created in the universe? but that issue is neither here or there. the real question is about the life we have given. what r we going to do with it. yes it is amazing that there are other planets out there but even more amazing is the creator of those planets the stars and galaxies. we should be looking for him and what he thinks about us.

The church says there are no aliens, or they would be mentioned in the bible. Maybe if all you goddies had the same story, it would be more believable.

we spend a billion dollars every two days in iraq and afghanistan. Nasas budget for a whole year is 18 billion. So we spend 1/12th as much on nasa (which might possibly save our species) as we do accomplishing absolutely nothing in the middle east. It is money well spent.

How many earth size rocks drift alone and exposed to the hellish cold of deep space with only starlight to illuminate their black mountains? It gives me the creeps.

When NASA was formed i think it was because of exploration an curiosity not to replace or to try to go elsewhere. If so many of you are so disatisfied with earth why dont you build you own spaceship and leave this planet from the sounds of some of your posts your ignorant thinking WONT BE MISSED!

This Just In ... Terrorism stikes the planet Earth from Kepler B-10. The al Kepla and Talikeps are going to strike. The shuttle launch intended to bang into Uranus will have to be postponed. 🙂
