Accused shooter's poems evoke his daily routine, scenes from Mauritius

Jared Lee Loughner, the man accused of shooting 20 people Saturday at an Arizona political event, attended a poetry class last year at Pima County Community College, a man in the class said.

Student Don Coorough provided CNN's Special Investigations Unit with copies of two poems purportedly written by Loughner for the spring semester class. They have been transcribed below with the same spelling and line breaks as the original copies.

Meat Head

Awaking on the first day of school
Pain of a morning hang over
Attending a weight lifting class for college credit
Attempting to exercise since freshman year of high school
Crawling out of bed and walking to the shower
Warm water hitting my back
Eureka

Thoughts of being promiscuous with a female again
Putting on a old medium red tee shirt, light brown cameo shorts, and black Adidas
For breakfast a glass of water, cold pepperoni pizza, and two Advil
Bringing my Nano Ipod with heavy metal music
Taking the local bus on a overcast morning
Waiting with crack heads after their nightly binge
Bus is cheap, two dollars for a ride anywhere in the city
Sitting in back against a hard plastic seat
Staring at stop lights, brand new cars, and graffiti
Coming to a slow halt in front of the school
Entering the gym as the glowing florescent lights are humming
Next to the treadmills, putting a green foam mat on the ground
Stretching for fifteen minutes, loosening the muscles in my legs, back and arms
Cleaning the mat with anti-bacterial spray and a paper towel
Jogging for ten minutes, my heart beating, beating, beating
Pain in my right side of the last minute of twenty
Looking around, the cute women are catching my eye
Probably waiting for their hot boyfriends wandering in the locker room
All the men are in shape with their new white tank shirts, basketball short, and Nike shoes
Confusing look on my face of no idea what to do
Deciding to copy other men's routines of
Arm Curls, Leg presses, Rows, Squats, Military something's, and Isolated whatever's
65 minutes
Leaving the gym thinking
Waiting for the bus with alcoholics that are going to the bars early
Coming home for another shower
While grabbing the white towel, the eureka moment is lingering
Quick nap and lunch is on my mind
Setting the alarm one hour before getting ready for my next class
Getting into bed

Falling asleep

Dead as a dodo

On the island of Mauritius a heavy storm is leaving.
In the fields of the ancient wild forest a wild field of mushrooms is growing.
Snails and grasshoppers are ready for the warmth.
The old grass growing with lizards are jolting for crickets while snakes looking for lonely mice.
Falcons are flying for pray.
Shallow light Blue Ocean shimmering at each wave as the black clouds are rolling.
Waves are lapping.
Fisherman on the reefs are casting their poles.
In warm water a pack of clown fish are floating.
Tiger sharks are swimming free.
Steel drums beating in the distance.
The full moon slowly setting for the sun is rising.
At the local cemetery there is weeping.
The dodo is finally dieing.

I like how everyone's making fun of his grammar like it's such a big deal. I don't think he meant people are literally "illiterate" in the sense they can't spell or punctuate correctly. I would imagine he's using it in a more meaningful context, similar to when people say the country is 'un-educated' meaning they don't realize certain things about history that are overshadowed, hidden, or not talked about because they're tragic and embarrasing, despite their effect on the present. I'm not trying to stick up for this guy in any way, I hope he gets the worst of the worst for punishments, but come on- let's not be childish and say "oh Jared, you spelled a word wrong you're so stupid!" He killed a lot of innocent people and we're condoning him for his grammar. God bless the US.

Don't you mean "condemning" him for his grammar? Sorry, couldn't resist.

and condoning is the wrong word. should be more on the lines of 'juding him based on his grammar.' my bad.

Shouldn't the fishermen cast their lines rather than their poles? Otherwise, the fishermen would be throwing their equipment into the ocean.

Forget Rhetoric.... Seems media is courting potential copy-cat shootings. Disturbed individuals may see all of this as "glorifying" this madman... Can't we also tone down on the daily headlines surrounding things like this?? His "poetry" isn't news... It's trivia and maybe evidence. Right and left media have responsibility here, too.

if u can, ask yourself are u just as twisted as loughner is for posting cruel comments about him? Every man believes he is righteous in his own eyes but that's leads to deceiving yourself. As far as loughner I pray that he seeks and can find forgiveness from god for what he did. loughner didn't come out his mothers womb feeling this way, its what he absorbed as he got older that provoked him to commiting this senseless act so once again just pray that he can find forgiveness from god for what did.

I think CNN and other media should stop crawling up this guy's butt for insight into his head. Yeah I clicked on this story, but didn't read the drivel. This guy should be locked away and forgotten as soon as possible so other demented souls do not get the inspiration to follow.

His rampage on Saturday is remarkably similar to last Thursday's episode of Grey's Anatomy. I feel for the victims and their families. I also hope that his parent's will be able to move on from this and that their guilt doesn't overwhelm their lives. Sad for everyone involved.

Anything that has to do with the arts CNN is going to display because they need to find something to blame. Va tech shootings they posted EVERYTHING he did videos poems stories you name it they showed it. Columbine they showed everything Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold did trying to find something or someone to blame. The nation chose Marilyn Manson and Doom to blame that time. Manson didnt walk up to those kids hand them the guns and ammo and say have at it boys. People blame Manson because he's a genius he took what every American parent dreads and fears their child will become and made a career of it thats why teens love him he's the best form of rebellion to follow and it makes parents ashamed of their kids. Jared snapped no way around it but he will get pay back in prison they hate rapists child molesters and child murders so he won't be in general pop. For to long if at all just to save his sorry hide a beating. He knows it will come thats why he's crying i'm insane.

Well, art, in this case, creative writing, can give insight to a writer's world view, emotional state, and can foreshadow things to come or tap into aspects of a writer's past. It makes sense to consider writings and sketches Loughner created, as there may be clues to when his thought process deteriorated into obsession.

"Anything that has to do with the arts CNN is going to display because they need to find something to blame. " How is posting someone's poems "finding something to blame"? Are they going to blame poetry? CNN already has the poems. How is posting them going to help CNN find something to blame they haven't already found after reading the poems. The whole criticism makes no sense.

Well Another pointless article. CNN is trying to spur emotional discourse. I wonder who is sicker? CNN or the shooter.
Already there is legislation to attempt to capitalize on the incident. Your civil liberties noose is getting tighter. By-By America.

He has all the marking of a mind controlled clone. If you look at his eyes you would notice he is highly medicated. Second. You really don't know if he wrote that poem.

They are posting everything because the American people demand to know every little detail.. If they didn't post/publish everything, then you'd be irate because they weren't telling the whole story. No one is blaming art, for crying out loud, they are just trying to gain a little insight into how this guy's mind works. Poetry, drawing, painting and other art forms are often very indicative of a person's frame of mind. Why do you think psychologists and psychotherapists use art as a tool to delve into the way a patient's mind works?

    • Yeah

I notice many commenters think this guy got more than the 15 minutes of fame he deserves, but believe you me that lock up in isolation in a federal penitentiary is no fun and games, assuming he escapes lethal injection. By now, I suspect, that privately he has the mental ability (look at his poem) to at least ask himself "what the heck have I done?". I think it is only a matter of time that this "high" will come crashing down and that smirk he wears on his face will soon vanish. My guess is that he has to put up a "game face" for now until it slowly sinks in that no one in the world supports his actions and that he is not some hero (think of the man that assassinated a Pakistani governor last week who now thinks he is a hero), and that he is despised and hated by many. Eating dog food, showering with men 5 times your size, and fearing for your life day in and day out in federal prison for the rest of your life will help change your world view.

Actually, you are thinking of the state penitentiary. Federal prison is white collar prison, he will be fine in the showers.

Having said that, I'm sure you are right about the feelings and realizations hitting him. He seems to be classic paranoid schizophrenic and once he gets on the anti-psychotics your tax dollars will provide it's going to hit him like a brick wall. Also he was probably on some sort of methamphetamine or stimulant and once he comes down from that....lets just say this kid will have enough shame, guilt, and problems in that cell with him that the execution chamber will seem like a reprieve.

Finally, for those of you making fun of his grammar and syntax, you are not proving anything to anyone by finding flaws in a psychotic's reasoning and logic. It only shows your lack of understanding of mental illness, not his lack of understanding of reality, which was implicit in the headline "Accused shooter....".

I think it's ironic that he's so obsessed with grammar when his poetry is full of spelling errors.

"Falcons are flying for pray," "The dodo is finally dieing"....really?

He actually was obsessed with the idea that the United States was trying to control us with grammar. The fact that his spelling and grammar were off does not surprise me.
