Snow present in 49 of the 50 U.S. states

Snow present in 49 of the 50 U.S. states

After big snow and ice events in the Southeast, Plains, and Midwest this week, 49 out of the 50 states currently have snow on the ground -  yes, even Hawaii, where snow falls in Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea all winter.

The only state that has avoided this icy blast is Florida.  Does that make you want to go on a nice, warm vacation to the Sunshine State?  You're not alone.

Put another way, that means snow is present in 69.4 percent of the lower 48, which is more than double than December.  This is extremely unusual, though it's hard to put a date on when this last happened because records aren't kept on this kind of event.

The National Operational Hydrologic Remote Sensing Center combines ground reports and images from satellites in space to determine how much of the country is covered in snow.  That's what you see in the image above.  The images tell how deep and widespread the snow is, and that's important not only for images like this one, but also for computer weather models, which use the data to generate accurate forecasts. Such forecasts were very useful in predicting this week's winter storms.

Earlier this week, two storms began to churn: one in the northern Plains and Midwest, and one in Texas.  The southern winter storm took a track across the Gulf Coast, pulling warm, moist air over an extreme arctic blast that set up over the eastern half of the United States late last week.  This provided fuel for the storm to carve a path of snow, sleet, and freezing rain from Texas to the Carolinas.

Here in Atlanta, we're still coated in snow and ice and probably will be for the next couple of days.  No one in the Southeast escaped the wrath except, of course, Florida.

But it's not over.  Now that the southern-track storm has moved into the Atlantic and is moving north, the other Midwest storm is going to merge with it, creating a Nor'easter event that could dump up to two feet of snow in the Northeast.  Winter storm warnings and advisories have been posted for the event - 32 states have winter storm advisories issued, by the way.

Here's how the snow forecast breaks down for some major cities:

Washington DC: 2-4 inches
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: 4-6 inches
New York, N.Y.: 6-12 inches
Hartford, Connecticut: 15-20 inches
Boston, Massachusetts: 12-16 inches

The snow and cold started early this winter and has been extreme for most of the country.  Usually the Southeast avoids the blast, but not in 2011.  We're all feeling a little "snowed in" this winter.

Al Gore calls it global warming because he is a moron. Its climate change. When you change the temperatures across the earth you also change weather patterns. It seems that the warming earth has experienced has changed weather patterns and brought the cold further south than usual. So look forward to hotter, dryer summers and colder, snowier winters.

The good news is that Canada now has less snow since its in Georgia right now.

Warmer winter temperatures allow for more snow because bodies of water do not completely freeze over as quickly had it been colder. So yes, thanks global warming.

Yes, this is global warming. Erratic weather patterns are a typical sign. However, the most prevalent signs are the melting of the glaciers/arctic, increased forest fires worldwide, devastating draughts, sea level rise, insect infestation, and many more pretty things. PLEASE LEARN ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING FROM A SCIENCE TEXTBOOK AND CALL YOUR SENATORS!!

Samitup, I see. You read it on the internet so it must be true! Sure there are global warmers with reports saying anything you want. Doesn't make it true nor does it mean its man caused. Natures CO2 production completely dwarfs anything produced by man. No comparison.

Check out the map for February 13, 2010. Snow was on the ground in every state including Florida. I found the archives on the same site as this reported found the map for today. So much for the theory that, "This is extremely unusual, though it's hard to put a date on when this last happened because records aren't kept on this kind of event." Looks like the reporter was wrong three times in one sentence!

HUFF, GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT. WE HAVE INCREASED THE LEVELS OF CO2 IN THE ATMOSPHERE TO SCARY LEVELS BY PUMPING TRILLIONS OF TONS OF CO2 AND OTHER GREENHOUSE GASES INTO THE ATMOSPHERE. PLEASE, PICK UP A SCIENCE TEXTBOOK OR PEER-REVIEWED SCIENCE JOURNAL AND LEARN ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING. ITS UNDENIABLE AND THERE IS NO REAL DEBATE AMONG SCIENTISTS THAT WE ARE CAUSING THE EARTH'S AVERAGE TEMPERATURES TO RISE.

gobal warming, is in fact, not inaccurate in describing the climate change, as on average, the earth is steadily warming. The problem is, when morons see cold streaks like the one we are currently experiencing they take it to mean the earth is not warming, and there for they disregard what science shows us. The fact that it's winter time, and it's cold, goes to show just how stupid global warming/climate change skeptics really are. Stupid being a gross understatement.

Huff- Aye and Earth has handled her own CO2 production for millions upon millions of years without any incident. It was only after we started massive deforestation did we start to have problems. Then after massive deforestation we ramped up our CO2 production to levels only Earth used to be capable of producing. We continue to chop up her forests while increasing CO2 production. If we reduce her forests she cannot absorb as much CO2. We also continue to increase our CO2 production, and she cannot keep up with both the CO2 Earth normally produces AND the extra we produce.

Earth isn't Jesus and cannot magically increase how much CO2 she can absorb. She can absorb so much for every acre of forest. As you decrease forest she cannot absorb as much. Past that it is just basic math until the amount she can absorb goes under the amount she and people produces.

Its very easy to be a global warming alarmist just abide by the following rules: If its warmer than normal the cause is global warming. If its colder than normal the cause is global warming. Lots of hurricanes? Global warming. Fewer hurricanes? Global warming. Flood? Global warming. Drought? Global warming. Famine? Global warming. Any unusual weather pattern or event? Global warming. Social or economic hardships? Global warming. Inability to find matching socks? Global warming.

Sure deforestation plays some role. Trouble is that nature itself produces so much CO2 itself that your claim most likely is miniscule. One volcano produces decades worth of gases that man does and deforestation doesn't account for the drop in CO2 absortion of just one volcanoes output. Nature out does anything of man many times over.

Huff- Hum? I seem to recall CO2 levels being steady for millions of years before hand (BTW took a class on this). Which implies that the amount of forests and carbon sinks were able to effectively absorb all of the CO2 Earth could produce, before we came around. Therefore your argument holds no weight. Also hundreds of years ago the Earth's atmosphere used to have large amounts of CO2 instead of O2 but the rise of plants changed that. They converted the planetary environment from CO2 based to oxygen based, leading to the rise of animals. A fully green planet can forever stay oxygen rich and even turn the planet from CO2 -> Oxygen.

So yes, changing the planetary environment from plants to concrete can change the composition of the atmosphere. Also one volcano blowing up wasn't worth noting in terms of CO2 emissions when the planet was fully green. Infact plants have been growing much better lately due to the extra CO2 which indicates they were having a lack of CO2 to process before.

I am ignoring Nitrogen because it plays no importance in this post. It is 78% of the atmosphere and oxygen is close to 21%.

haha, junk science?? That's very funny Huff. Why don't you contact a climate science professor at a top-tier university and ask her to explain global warming to you.

That .28% statistic is bogus. We have emitted enough carbon into the atmosphere to increase carbon levels from 320 PPM to 387 PPM in last 50 years! that's a staggering increase of CO2 in an extremely short time. As a result, the increased amount of CO2 absorbs heat which causes other air molecules to heat up and the global temperatures rise–as they have risen dramatically in past 10 years. I don't know if you are associated with the fossil fuel industry, but most sources of global warming deniers are. And so are the paid scientists who try to muddy the true scientific facts. Remember how the Bush administration edited Jim Hansen's facts about global warming? Well, that's all a product of the oil industry fighting against science. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/03/17/60minutes/main1415985.shtml

Kathy- Increased CO2 in atmosphere = increased acidity in ocean, it has also been warming oceans. Increased acidity and warmth is bleaching coral. Many fish populations rely on coral to repopulate. With less corral we have less fish. Less fish hurts the fishing industry and hurts our food supply. All proven science

Oceans also convert a good portion of our CO2 into oxygen. What happens when the Ocean gets too acidic for certain photo plankton? I really do not want to find out.

People just want to be heard. Believe what you want and just regurgitating facts that you believe are true, is true in your mind. Why sit hear and bicker. This is what makes you so enraged instead of doing something productive like making a change. Most likely you are afraid to change how you look at the world. We all know that littering is bad, right? If you believ this thenn clean up trhe garbage. But , you see it decide to turn away as though you do not see it, but the trash is still there unpicked up. If you pick it up everytime you cross its path, everytime you will make a change. Others will follow. Speak passionately about it and do. Do not preach and not do. If you think cars are bad for the enviornment get a cleaner car, do not make excuses why you dont. Enjoy how pretty the snow looks, help shovel instead of watching tv wondering why the streets are not being shoveled and complaining. That is counter productive. Actually help your neighbors, all of them, no matter what it takes. Do not ask just do.

If it is truely global warming go down knowing your kids, wife, neighbors, friends and passers by know you tried to do it right. Follow the laws and do the right thing. Take the chip off your shoulder.

my guess is, time got it wrong, as every single chart of average global temperatures show a sharp increase form the late 1800s until now. seeing as how they have very little to show for their data, I have no reason to believe them.

you know in the rest of the world, liberals and conservatives can agree on at least one thing: global warming is real. here in America, sadly, conservatives are either too stupid or too arrogant to admit they have been standing in the way of science.

durb in ak- CO2 is increasing due to man. However we are not making enough CO2 to single handedly cause this change. What we are doing is decreasing Earths ability to absorb and store CO2 while increasing our output of CO2. Normally whenever a volcano Erupted the CO2 it released would be absorbed by the massive forests, swamps, grasslands, and other eco systems of earth. Now that we have gotten rid of a LARGE majority of those former ecosystems Earth is having difficulty processing the CO2 it produces, let along the extra we throw into the air. It is all our fault, but it is not just because we are throwing extra CO2 into the air.

Also I am sure that concrete jungles assist in warming of the areas around it. In noon in the summer sit on a sidewalk (in a large city) then sit on some grass in the countryside and see how much of a difference in temperature the two places have.

Increased snowfall supports global warming theory in that higher rates of evappration from warmer water puts more moisture in the air that becomes snow in freezing temps.

Global warming means a warming in temperatures globally throughout the year. Not a warming in temperatures during the warm months and a much colder temperature during cold months. Warming means warmer not colder.
Read about the last mini ice age then talk about global warming.
Oh yeah and your moisture theory, I've been living in Florida for the past 20 years and the last 5 years have been drought. We have changed from a tropical wet environment to a dry less humid environment down here but I suppose global warming has something to do with that too right?

So Global Warming causes Global Cooling ... is that what you're saying? Because that sound like what you're saying and it also sounds incredibly ignorant. There is no global warming. There WAS – SOLAR warming – as all planets in the solar system warmed up. That process has stopped and all the CO2 we can push into the atmosphere now won't make it feel any warmer here on Earth. Have the weather patterns changed to push colder air south? Yes! Is the planet still warming? No! It hasn't for almost a decade now, and if Chinese atmospheric physicist, Lin Zhen-Shan, PhD, Peking University 1991, Professor of Atmospheric Sciences at Nanjing University in China is right in his paper from 2005, we are in for 25 to 30 years of global cooling. Now I know the leftist wing-bats like to think American scientists have been bought off by big oil. Do you think the same of the Chinese scientists - because you seem to love everything ELSE about China and its communism?

These are people who probably still believe that god lives in the clouds and the bible is the best historical reference that we can base our lives off of, but only select parts of it that applies to their lives, the ones that make them happy. The thought that they are actually destroying the earth by driving their gas guzzling SUV's just means they have to change their life to accommodate the rest of humanity, which just means less time to spent on making sure they have a good life.

I want to see the research that supports your point of view. If you can't provide it then basically you are just making up nonsense off the top of your head. I'm calling you out right here, and you can prove your side and be ultimately victorious in front of everyone if you can link me ONE credible peer-reviewed scientific article in a major science publication that supports your CO2 assertion. Otherwise, go back to the sandbox with the dimwits where you belong.

Hot Air, sure such gases may cause warming. Trouble is connecting that to man. Nature produces such gases 1000's of times that of man. There is simply no comparison to what nature itself produces. CO2?? Mans production is miniscule compared to nature yet Al Gore shows some pretty graphs and avoids talking about what nature does itself.

Huff- Aye Earth produces (fake numbers) 1000 tons of CO2 and she used to be able to absorb 1000 tons of CO2. We then embarked on massive deforestation and now she can absorb 900 tons of CO2. We are also producing 100 tons of CO2. So there is a total of 1100 tons of CO2 and Earth can absorb 900 tons. Eventually we will run into a problem, just like the US debt.

First off, I am in complete agreement that Al Gore is a tool! But I work in the environmental sciences.... climate change is real and we are contributing to it. Please take some time to learn a number of different sciences and how to link them before you reiterate a political sound-bite. Once youstudy and research this topic you will find that we are affecting the atmospheric and hydrological cycles. And while the earth does emit CO2, NO2 and SO2 we are enhancing these emissions. But if you don't buy anything I am saying please lobby to have CFC's be re-emitted , who needs the Ozone Layer!

I guess "E" has his caps lock on and doesn't know how to turn it off. Idiot.
Also, from what I've read in science books is that when trees die (natural or due to man) when they decompose, they release all of the CO2 they absorbed. If that's true, then it really doesn't make much of a difference. We can plant more trees, but in the end, there's just as much CO2 floating around, albeit not in the atmosphere, but below our feet. Sooner or later it ends up in the atmosphere.

      January 11, 2011 at 8:20 pm | Report abuse |
    • Darthlawsuit

Boberan- Actually they only release a fraction of it. You can release all of the CO2 by burning them, however you cannot burn all of a tree. You might think of a tree as what you can see, however they ALL have elaborate root systems that stay in the ground and keep the CO2 locked in. When they decompose they lose some of their CO2 but unless that decomposed matter is all burnt it will fall to the ground and eventually be covered up by other matter, at which point it is locked into the earth. There is a lot more complex things that can happen but I don't feel like typing it out on CNN and doubt people would read it.

2010 was the 9099th warmest year in the past 10,000. CO2 levels have been 3 times higher than they are now. Climate change is what happens after 100's of years. Weather happens by decades. Look at the past 100,000 years of CO2 and temperatures then look at where we are on the chart – nothing special high or low.

Jim, its a money making scheme. Gore has made millions off people that believe. Sorry, but evidence clearly shows man made CO2 and other gases is miniscule compared to natures. Even if you take the global warmers own 'facts' man produces only 0.28% of all greenhouse gases. Gore and the likes fail to account for water vapor, which accounts for 95% of earths greenhouse gases. Doing that incorrectly suggests mans contribution is 5.5% which is flat out wrong.

Huff, read about the carbon cycle. Yes, nature produces CO2. Also, we are pumping trillions of tons of CO2 into the atmosophere and burning up fossil fuels that are needed to store the CO2 as part of the carbon cycle. Nature's CO2 emissions are at a relatively constant rate, but the CO2 has increased from about 318 parts per million to around 387 parts per million since around 1960. This is absolutely unprecedented, and it is consistent with the vast amounts of carbon that we have burned into the atmosphere. Also, this disbalance in the carbon cycle is causing the oceans to become acidic (because they are absorbing unnatural levels of CO2), and the acidification is destroying the Great Barrier Reef and other coral reefs worldwide. Look it up.
