Barefoot man steals snow plow, kills cop

A man took a stolen snow plow on two-hour rampage through the streets of Toronto, Canada, Wednesday morning, killing a police officer and wrecking cars and a car dealership.

Police said the suspect stole the privately owned plow in downtown Toronto about 5:30 a.m., according to a report from CTV news.

Police Sgt. Ryan Russell, 35, was struck by the plow and pinned against his cruiser when he tried to stop the truck about a half-hour later, according to news reports. He died in a hospital emergency room.

The suspect hit numerous vehicles as he continued through the city’s streets for another half-hour or more, and rammed the plow into a Ferrari dealership, according to news reports.

Just after 7 a.m. the plow came to a stop after hitting a garbage truck, according to news reports. Officers approached the plow and opened fire, gravely wounding the suspect. He was in critical condition at a hospital, CTV reported.

According to a report in the Toronto Star, the plow company employees were working outside their vehicle when the suspect – a “guy with no shoes” – jumped in and sped off.

“He was barefoot and just came running and jumped in,” plow company President Peter Tolias told the Star. Officials have not released the suspect’s identity and have not speculated on a motive.

The fallen officer was an 11-year veteran of the Toronto force.

"This is the worst of days for the Toronto Police Service," Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair was quoted as saying.

cop should have known better than to jump infront of a plow – unless he was wearing a plow proof vest?

If you are from America please don't admit it. That was a stupid reply! Tell people your from Mexico and you are an idiot!! Police officer dies and your trying to make a joke. Who cares where the officer lived he was a human being who lost his life. Why does it have to be USA against Canada? It was human life lost not a hockey game.

Sean, the majority of people are civil – whether here or south of our border, sadly these comment boards (including many in Canada too) are filled with people that would not dare say the same things to our face. In fact, go read the comment boards in the Guardian, or the BBC in the UK – and you find the same ignorance.

I have family on both sides of the border. Some American, some Canadian.
I have lived in the United States and Canada.
There are wonderful Americans and Canadians. These tragedies touch all
of us. We are all North American in the end.
      Sympathies to the officers family.

@ Canadians. I am sorry for some of the ignorant people that live here in the US, please do not judge all of us by the few ugly ones with nothing to do all day but make fun of tragic events. Secondly, let's tone down the comments about the US. For those of us that are not "ugly Americans" it is not lost on us that Canadians exist and thrive thanks to us. A majority of your population lives within a stones throw of our borders and employed by our companies. I love our neighbors to the north and am sorry for any loss of Canadian life. The rest of you hosers can take off – eh?

No worries, we have our share of idiots too ;). Most of us have many ties to the U.S, and lets face it we do like to playfully mock each other from time to time – after all we did beat you in hockey, and someday we're going to invade Florida – no no not the rest, just Florida, we need somewhere warm to spend the winter 😉

Jeez, what is wrong with you people – making jokes about a cop getting killed. If you are Americans you need to keep your Azz in the Tuscon blogs and be stupid where people are use to it. Don't make a bad name for all us Americans! Some of us love our neighbors to the north! Condolences to the Officers family, friends, and coworkers.

American's shoot each other to the tune of 200+ homicides a day with no comment of it being a tragedy or even an issue from anyone in power. A man kills a cop with a snow plow and it is, "the worst of days" in Toronto. What the hell is wrong with America???

      12% bl`ack population. Nuff said.

You only hear about wh`ites being involved in gun violence in America when it's some cr`azy doing the shooting, which, when accounting for the difference in population between the two countries, happens about as frequently as cr`azies going on rampages in Canada. Blame our bla`cks.

The cop wouldn't have died if he didn't stand in front of the plow. Did he really think that just by standing in front of a moving vehicle the driver would stop?? Not very smart.

Idiotic comments, not just in response to this story but every time a story is open for comments, is one of the reasons people in the rest of the world lose more respect for Americans everyday. I live just across the border but dread having to go to your country to deal with people in a country that has the collective IQ of an ant hill.

Not sure what the IQ of an anthill would be, but I think you are safe for a few more years. Once the upcomming generation starts to take over, THEN i'd be concerned. Nothing but a bunch fo socially inept 13 year olds expecting welfare handouts who learn how to interact in the anon world of cyberspace...I am afraid for America's future.
Have room for one more up north?

This is an absolute tragedy! We must immediately ban all snow plows! After all, if we're going to ban all guns after the Arizona shooting, we must necessarily ban all snow plows after a cop is killed with one. Makes perfect sense!

But don't you see, the nutjob killed one person in the same time a machine gun could kill dozens!!! I don't know the answer to keeping guns out of the hands of criminals, not sure if gun control would work considering that criminals don't follow the law, and the existence of the black market for banned weapons. But certainly, can you seen their (gun control advocates) point at least? Someone can make a weapon of a brick, but they can't cream 30 people at a 'clip' with one.
