Gotta Watch: Baby ape; stolen urn; Conan redux

Baby ape! – A critically endangered baby gibbon ape is born at Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo. This tiny ape looks more like E.T. than its mother. And like a hairless cat, it may be cute to some, but revolting to others.

Late wife's ashes stolen – Bob Herrle is waiting for good news from the police. They're looking for a suspect who stole an urn from his home while he was at church. The urn contained the ashes of his late wife.

You just can't argue with that. I agree 100 percent.

You're setting a pretty lousy example with those multiple punctuation marks, yourself, Mrs. Howell.

Saying that the determining factor between a primate being an ape or a monkey is simply the presence or lack of a tail is a gross oversimplification

i.e. Macaca sylvanus (the "Barbary Macaque"), a tailess monkey.

Brad, I do not disagree that it is an oversimplification but this is how most science is presented to the general public: free of nearly all scientific jargon. The average person does not know, and most likely does not care, about every difference between apes and monkeys. I work at an aquarium with seals, and even though we have signs that point out the differences between seals and sea lions most people still think that we have sea lions. If you want something that is more scientifically accurate you need to be reading a scientific journal not CNN.

I do agree that it's common practice to leave jargon out of descriptions and explanations. However, I don't consider giving a factually innacurate description instead of no description (as you pointed out, most people don't care what the difference is anyway) to be 'leaving out the jargon.' I figured there was no harm/ no foul for pointing out the error.

That gay museum in SF is one of the first parts in a massive complex of museums and art galleries. Next door to it will be the candy museum. Across the street, the NAMBLA museum opens next month. The first office in California for Obama's re-election bid will open this summer at about the same time as the mosque is finished.

the thiefs should probably give back the ashes, but i am sure they threw it out once they realized it was not valuable. Sad.

Stop trying to get us to think that Conan is funny. He is terrible and has nothing remotely interesting or unique about his show. Just because he can mimic art doesn't make him a good artist. He is one of the worst talk show hosts ever, and I have seen Ricki Lake. Just garbage!

    January 13, 2011 at 2:51 pm | Report abuse |

To say Conan's show is not unique is to say that Mona Lisa is just a painting. When it comes to Conan there is no other such thing as a Late Night Talk Show host. He is the only one who can get me to watch and that includes all of them.

@Mrs. Howell: I can understand how you feel. As a teacher you want to expose your students to good examples so that you can reinforce part of your lessons in real life. I gotta agree with you.
