Tucson victim Dorwan Stoddard's funeral set for Sunday

A funeral service will be held for Dorwan Stoddard at 2 p.m. (4 p.m. ET) Sunday at Calvary Chapel East in Tucson, Arizona.

When a gunman opened fire at U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords' meet-and-greet January 8 outside a Tucson supermarket, witnesses said Stoddard, a retired construction worker, was trying to shield his wife, Mavy, when he was shot in the head and fell onto her. Mavy was shot three times in her legs but is expected to recover.

Stoddard's daughter Penny Wilson, who wasn't at the event, told reporters last week that her mother has confirmed the account. "He heard the shots and covered my mom with his own body and protected her and saved her. Mom definitely felt that way," Wilson said.

Another daughter, Angela Robinson, said that Mavy didn't know she was shot until she arrived at the hospital with her husband. She is still recovering in the hospital.

The couple, who were childhood sweethearts, attended Mountain Avenue Church of Christ in Tucson. Dorwan helped those in need and was a handyman for the church, the pastor told CNN affiliate KGUN.

"Didn't write any books. There are no streets named after them. There is no monument to them, but their impact in the community of Tucson will last a lifetime," the Rev. Michael Nowak  said about the Stoddards.

"They were inseparable. You saw one and you knew the other one wasn't far behind. That will be a whole other life for her, so I'm afraid it will hit her harder down the road," Nowak told KGUN.

Tucson resident Jared Lee Loughner, 22, is facing federal charges in the January 8 attack.

Brave man. Loughner shouldn't be facing federal charges he should be facing a firing squad. NOW.

Fack the firing squad...too quick. In the words of mr. Wallace, Jared needs to be visited by "a coupla hard, pipe-hittin' n-–s, who'll go to work on the homes here with a pair of pliers and a blow torch..."

All this anger at the GOP, Fox news, and talk radio are misplaced. Come on people, don't you understand the basic laws of Supply & Demand? If all these people disappeared tomorrow they would only be replaced the next. They just give their listeners what they want. Why do you think their ratings are so high?

Their listeners shoulder the responcibility for what this crap media says.

Ahhh if you read any news sources outside of CNN you would know that the shooter did not follow any major news outlets or subscribe to any political party. But when have facts ever gotten in the way of an emotionaly charged smart ass liberal. Please think just a little. If you are going to suggest that a 22 year old death metal fan that read books by Hitler and other Evil men is also listening to Palin Limbaugh or any other political commentator than you better damn well have some evidence of it otherwise you just sound stupid and are slandering people. How about applying the Golden rule. What would you think if you were the people in your cross-hairs. (opps that's a gun reference you can blame me for the next mass murder event because they may have read this post)

Okay, ignoring all the partisan rhetoric for now, What this man did for his wife qualifies him as heroic beyond all doubt. The love he had for his wife was deeper than words can express, and that he gave his life to protect hers makes this man no less than truly remarkable in my eyes.

I would like Mavy Stoddard to know that I will always hold her husband in the highest regard. He was truly a great man.

After reading about the victims in Tucson it saddens me; but then to read some of the comments write makes me sick. Remember when you point fingers at someone you have 3 fingers pointing back @ you. This is the way I look at things in life, "what goes around, comes around." Those people that were gunned down paid the price with their lives, lives that were cut short. Now they are with God in heaven were there is peace and love. May the peace and grace of God be with the family that lost their love ones.

Can somebody please go after these fake money making charities like Red Cross, Unicef, World Vision & others. They collected billions of dollar all over the world for Haiti & the situation is worst then ever. These blood sucking charities all got rich & most their employees are living lavish lives with huge bank account balances. I beg anyone in a position to find out where the money went & to get it back ASAP to save those poor dying people. All those who took this money for themselves, all of you are murderer of innocent people. Hell is waiting for you!!!

Wow so quick to play the blame game! What have you done to help the people of Haiti or anyone affected by a disaster?! More than $245 million has been spent this last year to help the people of Haiti by the Red Cross and if you will remember this was a very poor country to begin with and it will take time to rebuild everything there. Oh and non profit workers being rich ummm check your facts missy....red cross workers make little money and have not received raises or bonuses in more than 4 years, retirement and 401k gone. So these people do it out of the kindness of their hearts (nothing like you). Oh and they are 97% volunteer...so quit your complaining!

Is this supposed to be the BEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD? Maybe the best country for guns and gun crime in the world. Every other industrialized country thinks we are a bunch of lunitics running around with uzi's. maybe we are.

I cried reading this story; Mr. Stoddard is a hero in my eyes and I can only hope to some day marry a man who will love me to this same extent. My thoughts are with the family; be proud of your father, a man who was willing to lay down his life for love.
