Bloody, naked body found in Ohio shed

Police in Columbus, Ohio, are trying to identify and retrace the final hours of a naked, bloody man found dead in a backyard garden shed.

Someone had knocked on neighbor Dennis Hoover's door at midnight, but Hoover refused to open the door because he couldn't see the man, he told CNN affiliate WBNS-TV.

Hoover called 911 but police could not find anyone, the station reported. Bloody handprints were visible on Hoover's door in the morning.

After daylight, Hoover followed footprints in the snow into a neighbor's yard, where he discovered the bloodied body in the shed.

"He was covered (in blood). It looked like he went through a briar patch," Hoover told WBNS. "Just scratched all up."

Investigators were hoping an autopsy would tell them who the man was and how he was injured.

  1. Consider This

My best advice to anyone when facing a situation such as this where a knock is heard late at night and you cannot see who is at the other side of the door, is to simply do this:

Ask in a loud, authoritative voice: Do You Need For Me To Call 911?

If they don't answer, perhaps it could have been a prank. If they answer angrily and demand you open the door, then sure enough you need to call 911! Regardless, it's Better To Be Safe Than Sorry! Opening one's door to strangers is never a good idea especially in the middle of the night.

  2. theory

The dead guy was likely an ordinary citizen who got stopped by police for a traffic stop. Then, the cops might have tasered him because he didn't produce his license and registration fast enough. Then, they probably pulled him from his vehicle and beat him silly with their flashlights. then they peppered sprayed him. Then he was left blinded and bloodied wandering door to door looking for help.

  3. truth

Come on people, who opens their door to a stranger regardless of the time of day or night? The homeowner did the right thing, he called the police. My first thought like many others was "why didn't the police see the bloody handprints"? Sounds like a poor job on the police that responded. Instead of calling this man a "coward" you should be asking why didn't the police do a better job.

    1st cop: "I don't see crap. You?"

    2nd cop: "Nope."

1st cop: "Too damn cold for this bull."

2nd cop: "Yeah, lets go get some doughnuts."

I wouldn't have opened the door either. Too many home invasions where I live. Knock on the door at midnight means home invasion to me!

For those complaining about the gentleman not opening the door in response to someone knocking on the door, just last night a woman in Cleveland actually opened her door from a group of men claiming to be the police. She ended up getting beat up and her car stolen from these thugs (and no, i'm not speaking about the police). I'm not questioning the intelligence of many of those posting on this site but...Well actually I guess I am question their intelligence or lack thereof

Many times, Cougars attack and drag their prey back to safety to finish them off. The fact that the unidentified bloody tracks in the snow alerted the neighbors is a big clue. Most likely, the guy knocked, and the the cougar (or panther) jumped and tackled him off the doorstep just before Hoover looked out. He is lucky he want' mauled himself.

Where in the story does it mention 'cat prints', grizzly adams?

If he was handsome, single, drunk, and in his twenties, then I'd definitely suspect cougars. Otherwise it might have been an animal attack of some kind.

I was thinking cougar myself since the body was mutiliated and there was a blood trail leading to the shed. Ordinary foxes etc couldn't do that kind of thing that quickly.

And wouldn't it have done more than just scratch him? It doesn't say "eaten".

First of all Dennis Hoover was not and is not a coward. You have lost your mind if you think you should answer the door at that time of night. You are going to be the saying I wish I didn't do that. You have to watch even during the day let alone night time. Second who said it was this bloody person knocking on the door. If someone needed help or was attacked wouldn't they be screaming and yelling for help. If the victim was the person knocking on the door then why couldn't they find him? This doesn't make sense.

SERIOUSLY! OK a kindergartner could figure this out ...follow the blood in the SNOW!!!
I am so glad that I am not in that town! The blood is on the police hands – how lazy could they be!?
If the guy was curious enough – he could have looked out more windows and watched the guy too ...
but no – he did the right thing – called the police to let them take care of it – unfortunately – the police
in this case were not very good 'detectives' to figure out something so very simple. They could have protected
a neighborhood AND saved a life. How sad.

I certainly have to admit that I may not have opened the door either. But the gentlemen did contact the Police who did not seem to investigate properly. If the blood was visible in the morning, it most certainly was visible at the time of the incident. Bloody footprints in the snow, come on, the officers did not follow up properly. This person was alive and knocking on a door for help, the police should have taken more caution in looking around the area and may have saved a life.. How sad!

Someone needs to fire the overnight cops! They should have seen the footsteps and blood on the door! Were they drinking or just unconcerned or did they do it themselves? I wouldn't want this mutt and jeff to be my only help when I was in need.
