Police: 2 teens shot at California high school

[Updated at 4:05 p.m.] A suspect in an apparently accidental shooting at
Gardena High School in California has been caught and handcuffed by police, according to footage aired by CNN affiliate KTLA shortly before noon PT.

"The student in custody was the student involved in this morning's shooting," Robert Alaniz, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Unified School District, told CNN affiliate KCAL/KCBS.

Los Angeles Police Deputy Chief Patrick Gannon told reporters that the shooting appeared to be accidental. A student brought the gun to school in a backpack, and when the student set the backpack on a desk the gun discharged, wounding two students, he said.

A 15-year-old girl was in critical condition with a head wound, and a 15-year-old boy was in stable condition with a neck wound, Gannon said.

I've heard of school shootings that haven't gotten so much attention through the last few years but all of a sudden we're talking gun control and we blow the story up... however you cover the story it should be consistant

As it's only breaking news, this is all they have to report. Breaking news is breaking news. If you lived in that community, I'm sure that you'd like to know that your kids or your neighbors' kids were in danger, yes?

@Main Event: If it was you or a family member, it would be news. The fact that you have seen the stories is, in itself a statement. Let's cure the gun control issue and then worry about the murders and shootings level of newsworthiness and equilibrium of coverage.

Drop the hammer on this person. Don't open it for debate...just put them in a glass box, naked in front of the school with a port so that people can speak in, but cannot hear their voice....then pipe-in The Carpenters until they die of thirst.

Give me a break, 31Mess. You really think we'll be safer if only police carry guns? That has all the makings of a tyranny. It should be harder to get guns and more should be required of gun owners. You can't drive without taking classes and passing a test. Guns shouldn't be any different. More people die on the road every day from negligent drivers, drunk drivers, etc than all shootings combined (probably for the whole year). Shall we take away cars too?

Those who oppose gun control conveniently overlook the fact that England and Canada have far, far lower crime rates than we have in the US. Granted, their dental care is abysmal....but that's a whole other Oprah. 😉

And by the way...what if only the police has guns and one of the policemen gets mad and starts shooting at people??

If you call one paragraph "Blowing up a story", what do you call the coverage of 6 killed and 14 wounded and the funerals of the victims? What do you call it when after this horrible thing happens and Sarah Palin makes herself look like she is the victim? What do you call it when she and others that have said and or implied all of these horrible things claim their comments in no way contributed to events happening now? I don't know about you but I call it BS. You see, they know that they are enciting and exciting the minds of both the balanced and unbalanced. They are not stupid. They know that if they can scare away the opposition votes they will win in their cause. They know they can do this because we are a society today that has not instilled certain values in our children and they know this too. These people are not stupid. They know that if they keep shouting kill, kill, kill that someone will eventually kill but they also know that they cannot be involved directly by someone trying to say that they conspired with the killer.

Now you may call it whatever you choose. It can be blowing up a story, it can be stretching the truth or it can be out right lying. Whatever you choose to call it, in the end the long or short of it is that someone will have either been shot or killed or both. If this nation is going to survive we had better start having and displaying respect for eachother. We had better start to taking care of our selves so we can then help the rest of the world. If we take care of our own country first then we will be in a better position to help other nations. Until we do that we will only continue on our down hill slide into the ownership jaws of China.

@Rob Cars are a necessity, and we all need transportation, so I believe it's a bit different than guns. I do though agree with you that outlawing guns is a bad idea, if people want to have guns, then let them have guns, just make sure the person is mentally stable, and capable of handling such a responsibility.

The gun rights folks are so brainwashed by the NRA and stupid conservative buzz talk that there's no convincing them. The gun control folks should not waste their time and life on them. All politicians fear the $$ and power of the NRA so there's no political solution. They want every citizen to have an automatic weapon with clips. That will make us safer. Guns kill, people don't is absurd. Why don't we legalize personalized nuclear weapons while we're at it. Ban criminals? We incarcerate more people than anywhere in the world. But there's no compromising with gun fanatics. Oh, well.

To those of you at CNN, you question the fact that parents "feel the need" to go to the school to be with their child, but would only slow the authorities investigation? Put yourself in their position! If your child were at A school that were going through this all of you would be there.

      Re: Name*LA Girl in NC
I've noticed that more-gun-control advocates conviniently take any statistic that seems to support their claim at face value. Here's something to blow your mind: Israel has a lower murder rate per capita than either the US or UK. How many guns you think are floating around over there? Further, when spouting a stat, it would strengthen the position by clarifying what is being discussed- what is crime rate? What do guns have to do with how many people left the scence of an accident any given year? I assume you mean violent crime, and the beyond that, violent crime involving guns. Is that the statistic in use? More research, less emotion.

Brian, guns are a necessity for some people. Just as cars are not for many. It's all about perspective, lifestyle, etc. Guns are never going away. These shootings could happen once a week and our country would end up in civil war before we'd ban guns. Prohibition doesn't work. It didn't work for booze. It doesn't work for drugs. And it sure wouldn't work for guns. People need to stop always looking for the easy answer (ban it, give the government more power...because, time and again, they prove themselves to be responsible...) and start demanding better. We spend untold and unaccounted for trillions of dollars on a war machine every year...but we can't educated our public, nor provide a baseline of services to ensure that each citizen can thrive. Sorry, but I don't trust our government to do the right thing. I'll keep my guns.

      Check your facts Rob.
For the most recent year figures are readily available for (2007):
There were 41,059 traffic fatalities in the United States and 15,387 of those were alcohol related
More than100,000 people were shot in murders, assaults, suicides, accidents or through police intervention
      66,768 people survived gunshot wounds
31,224 people died of gun violence
      12,632 were murdered
3,067 children and teens died of gun violence
2,161 children and teens were murdered
613 people were accidentally killed by guns

So, for a YEAR for both measures
15,387 died in alcohol related crashes (which includes alcohol use by anyone related to the fatal crash, not just the negligent driver) vs 31,224 that died of gun violence [in other words, drunk drivers killed less than HALF as many people as guns] and 15,387 alcohol related deaths vs 12,,632 people that were murdered (like more gun owner training or licensing is going to cut that number)
On a per owner basis, the death rate from guns is many many times that of motor vehicle owners. If one had to choose which to eliminate to cut the death rate by 30,000, how many people would choose to ban cars rather than guns?
So how about you give the rest of us a break and stop with the opinions that are starkly contradicted by facts?

AJ from NJ, you tell me you plan for outlawing guns and we'll compromise. Lets say next year you win, they vote to outlaw guns. How does that work? Do they search everyone's home for a gun and then remove it? Do we go on the honor system and ask everyone with a gun to turn it in (kinda like we're on the honor system now asking people not to kill people with their gun)? Do we just stop letting people buy new guns but people who already have them can keep them (there are guns from the Civil War that work like new)? None of these options seem viable to me, but if you can come up with a plan that works, and doesn't just disarm those of us who carry to protect our families, I am open to hear it.

I am so sick of people pointing fingers at video games, movies and singers. For every psycho that goes on a killing spree, there are THOUSANDS of other people who enjoy the same activities (playing games, watching movies, listening to music...not the killing) that do not do such horrible things. If you have to blame someone or something, blame the shooter! Hold that person responsible for his own actions.
It's ignorance like yours that lets killers get away with their actions. "It's not my fault; Marilyn Manson/Grand Theft Auto/Call of Duty made me do it." You don't see people jumping into pipes then blaming it on Mario, do you????

What does Call of Duty have anything to do with this incident? Absolutely nothing! Violence has existed longer than video games and even some broke punk who never was able to play video games is just as capable of some kid who has a PS3/Xbox360 and plays Call of Duty.

CK, It is entirely true that there will always be people who do things like this be it with guns, knives, or clubs. The problem is that with guns the body counts tend to be a lot higher. Not always, but often. Gun control isn't about eliminating risk but managing the risk properly. Personally, I'm alright with people having guns. I'm not alright alright with people getting them without taking mandatory safety and shooting classes. I'm not alright with straw buyers, gun show loopholes, and so forth. A well armed society should also be a well trained society.

It is already against the law for a kid to own a handgun. It is a federal law. I believe one has to be twenty-one years old. NOT a kid!

Guns are cool. It is such a good idea to let everyone have a gun for protection. Because real men need protection.

I think when I turn 13 I will get a gun too. I luv America

Probably a tea partier. Was that school on Palin's hit list. Before we get any information on what happened, we should all talk a bunch of crap like we know whats going on. We don't have actual lives anyways.
